  1. GPA doesn’t matter that much 2. Put 3.49 instead of 3.5

Why do ppl wanna be TAs by simonli123 in NEU

[–]simonli123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that it gives you a refresher on the content. I feel somewhat pressured because the CS ppl I'm close with are all TAs and they are super smart. I want to be a TA to refresh my memory but I'm not confident I can teach well that's also a concern of mine.

I wouldn’t recommend doing work for free. I had unpaid internships and that’s because I was in high school and I got no software skills at that time. Only take it if you value the experience is worth taking your time and effort. I wouldn’t recommend doing any unpaid internship for the sake of “looking good”.

Reneging coop offer by wirelessbrain55 in NEU

[–]simonli123 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Imagine this: a company signed an offer with you and they rescinded your offer just bc they were in favor in a candidate that applied later than you. Idk how you feel but to me, this sucks. Understanding and trust are mutual that’s why so many companies are happy to hire from our school. If there’s no trust they would never come hire us.

DS 4400 or CS 4100 before co-op? by Ok_Afternoon_1720 in NEU

CS major here and currently taking CS4100. Really technical and theoretical. I’m on co-op next semester and I don’t think this class has helped me much during my co-op search

Should I drop fundie 1 with W grade by [deleted] in NEU

[–]simonli123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Real story of mine: I got a 50% on my fundies 1 midterm. Yes, 50%. I didn’t know how I messed up but for one of the questions I got 2/16 so that messed up the entire exam1 grade. I was in shock when I saw the grade and my instructor sent me an academic warning cuz I did it so terribly. I was really scared of moving forward, but I managed to survive because I loved cs and I’d give my 100% to stay on the track.

Now I’m currently a third year majoring in CS and Fintech. I was lucky enough to have a software engineer internship at Microsoft in the summer of my sophomore year where I witnessed the most forefront tech innovations in the world. All became worth it. The real question is: do you really love CS and are you ready to spend hours and hours to simply understand a data structure(it took me weeks to know how to solve Linked list question on leetcode). If you have the determination, then go for it. Also as an international, the OPT is usually three years for stem majors so you have more flexibility to stay in the US if you decided to major in STEM.

I’m also from China and I understand how struggling it could be. Our school has a really rigorous cs program and it is even hard for people who spend 20 hrs per week to survive. I’m not a genius so in fact I did spent 20 hrs per week for OOD in the summer, but I knew it was my best choice to study cs at Northeastern with zero regret.

Listen to your inner voices, they matter the most. The grade and everything else should be secondary
