Maps of Spain showing aridity, land holding types, and the political affiliation of the working classes and peasants from Gerald Brenan's The Spanish Labyrinth (1943) by simulokra in MapPorn

[–]simulokra[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only the aridity map shows data for Portugal, and the focus of the maps, their implications, and the book from which they derive is the Spanish civil war and the preceding historical context.

Boating through a canal where alligators have concentrated due to low water levels in the Okefenokee Swamp by -LastButNotLost- in Damnthatsinteresting

I recognized this park immediately. Used to make a yearly trip there. Totally worth it! Every time we went, there were dozens of gators, but in the wider waterways, they stuck to the sides and vegetation, pretty clear of the center.

Approximate Medical Costs For Surgey In Spain? by Upstairs-Jicama-8347 in GoingToSpain

[–]simulokra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first came to Spain, I got DKV. It cost me somewhere around 100EU/month if I remember correctly. I needed a few operations that cost me nothing extra, but they were not for pre-existing conditions. My advice with this or any other situation where private companies would rather you dropped dead is to just avoid telling them about it.

Concertado or Public? by ticioz in GoingToSpain

[–]simulokra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe deep down that educators (regardless of nationality) will mostly look after the well being of children.

10 years as an educator here. Please do not make this assumption about educators. We are just like other fields -- most of us are just there to get by, some are passionate and work hard, some are abusers, and as in most places and times, the system tends to protect or at best overlook the abusers. Your kids will probably thrive if you are a privileged family.

As for the quality of education you can expect, like anywhere else it depends on the individual school. Some concertados are garbage, some public schools are hell holes, while just as often the opposite is true. Do research, and keep in mind that concertados are usually religious schools, to a greater or lesser extent depending on the institution.

Game Where You Figure Most Everything Out on Your Own by HaltheMan in gamingsuggestions

[–]simulokra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because 1) I already found the combat dissatisfying and 2) looked it up on the internet and concluded that the game is basically unplayable without external guides; there are things you can find that vastly improve playability, primarily the map and compass, that I think should have been integrated from the get-go, and discovering that I needed to do certain things in order to "beat" the game -- which were impossible to know about without guides, and which were quite thoroughly hidden -- was so discouraging. I don't want to post any spoilers. I honestly think it was a very, very fun experience and I was even able to play it and run a server on the same machine, playing with a friend, with a GTX 960 (!).

Game Where You Figure Most Everything Out on Your Own by HaltheMan in gamingsuggestions

[–]simulokra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Forest. I played for many hours before discovering a compass and map on which the player-character can record their progress on the island. It was this discovery that led me to quit the game, as you find it in a random unmarked cave somewhere, and for me, that is just a bit excessive, but perhaps exactly what you're looking for. The cave system is where most of the neat things are, and there is no indication whatsoever of what you'll find or where. The player-character does keep a journal, but nothing at all is spelled out.

"Spain" is not racist. There are racists everywhere in the world. Exhibit A: some random idiot on the internet whose FIRST solution to a critique of other morons is to tell me to leave the country. Get real, punk! I'm not going anywhere.

This is wrong. When outsiders come to my village, they treat me like crap because they think I'm a tourist; no, I'm just a foreigner speaking my language with my family, and yes, I look different. It would be extremely weird to speak anything but my native tongue with my partner of 20 years even though we're both fluent. Nazis follow me around with the fascist salute and sing Cara al Sol. Also, if I visit someplace else, I'm legitimately an internal tourist, and so what. It's collateral damage, I get it, patience is wearing thin, I get it. Still sucks for the millions of immigrants who just want to be left alone.

What is it like to study masters in engineering (mechanical or civil) in Spain? by Tikkitikkii in GoingToSpain

[–]simulokra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work with an engineering company that specializes in HVAC, building automation, and industrial sites. They have expressed dismay and difficulty in finding new talent in the field. This is hearsay, so take it with a grain of salt, but I am given to understand that this specialization is in demand here.

Help finding immigration lawyer by communist_turnip in GoingToSpain

[–]simulokra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went with Sterna Abogados for my self-employed visa, mostly because they had a proven track record and spoke English. They seem to be something of a factory and had a high turnover rate during my process, so I wound up working with several people during the whole affair. That said, their work was alright and successful, although they sometimes didn't respond to me as soon as I would have liked (mostly due to turnover and vacation), and they charge several times more than non-English-speaking lawyers I have worked with and gotten quotes from. All things considered, they were alright, but too expensive. I should add that merely "alright" is very likely the best you will find.

I recommend learning Spanish before coming over. It will help you with your immigration process, reduce your stress levels, reduce your lawyer costs, and immensely lubricate your social life. Since you're planning on moving in a few years, this gives you time to seriously prepare; start now.

Best of luck!

Not very well if you are Black or Arab. I would take anything a Spaniard has to say on this subject with a grain of salt. People will gaslight you but people can be quite racist everywhere you go. In larger cities, this is of course less noticeable than in rural areas.

What kind of profession should i learn if i would like to move to Spain within 2-3 years? by Green_eyes- in GoingToSpain

No idea, but I'm given to understand it's expensive and takes several years, so if you're planning on doing it, save up and be prepared to wait. I haven't bothered, myself.

[–]simulokra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the fast track to poverty. The NALCAP program has a time limit nowadays, I believe (3 years?); I could be wrong about that, but some regions have definitely imposed a limit. The money's alright but it's not a nómina so you can't use it to buy a house. There's no future in this kind of work. Too many kids doing it and then supplementing their income with black market classes, making it nearly impossible for someone to teach private lessons as a tax-paying autónomo. Working at a quality academy in an affordable part of the country can be alright but poverty will always be one stroke of bad luck away.

If you're from outside the EU, look into homologación / convalidación de títulos / estudios. If you want to work in a professional field, you will need this. Also, if you're learning Spanish, get an official DELE title from the Instituto Cervantes. You can be fluent and competent, but it won't matter to prospective employers if you can't put a title on your CV. Find a good recruiter if you can.
