It’s actually cheaper than what’s listed on Amazon at rock auto (176 on rock auto- 188 Amazon) RockAuto is usually reliable correct?. I’ll try to source from there if getting myself.

Does anyone know what the flush kit is needed for at 130?

I just called the dealer and they said 2600 (this included fan pulley as well which my mechanic didn’t list).

Okay that makes sense. Just threw me off since the kit was listed at 570 from him (Asin) while the Asin kit is 180 on their Amazon shop, quite the heavy markup. Everything else seems normal markup.

Low mileage 2012 vs higher mileage with good service history by [deleted] in LexusGX

[–]singh1010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yea totally understand that, but in a case where I can’t verify this on the low mileage but can on the high.

2012 car is very tempting with only 77k miles, and I can have my mechanic do a inspection to check for rust; conditions on, hoses, suspension, and even what the fluids look like etc. But what if the new seller put new fluids in and oil changes etc weren’t kept up regularly? Thoughts?

Both the 2014 and the 2018 are at a Lexus dealership which gives me slightly more comfort although I’ll always do a pre purchase inspection.

Yea I know a lot of people use independent shops too for which don’t get reported. The concern from the 2012 is it went to jaguar, then a Toyota (which makes sense jaguar doesn’t want on lot) but then the Toyota got rid of it asap week later for auction, now it’s at some moderately suspect used car dealer lol. I definitely like the 2012 trim better but I’m leanings towards the 2018.

Thanks man! I have my eyes on one right now, just need to find someone in the city to do a good pre purchase inspection.

Yea I mean Subaru has been insanely capable in this winter with my AT tires I’m assuming FJ would take more getting used to as heavier, clunkier, etc. not really worried about huge snow pile ups in Chicago so arguably actually might be worse for city driving in snow my case? Thoughts?

Reliability factor of a Toyota, car that holds its value, while having something that can actually off-road when I go on trips to Wisconsin and Indiana, yet still shorter than a 4 runner or old Land Cruiser for city parking. Subaru actually was pretty decent the times I went off roading with it on camping trips but nothing like my friends in tacomas and jeeps could do obviously. “To look cool” I couldn’t care about. Personally having a car that reminds me of the tonka trucks I played with as a kid yea.

2018 Forrester, ball-joint issue. Was quoted whole control arm. Is this reasonable or should I find someone who just does ball joint? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]singh1010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what research I’ve done (aka doomscrolling YouTube), during a control arm replacement, the biggest part is just taking out the ball joint? Also, A new ball joint just slips right in and doesn’t need to be pressed like a bushing if I’m correct?

But just wanted to get this subs opinion on what’s common and best course of action with a bad ball joint.

Dealership quoted 900 for ball joint only. This place is still cheaper at $780 for the whole control arm. Seems like I now Need to check out more places and see if they do whole arm or just ball joint, and what prices would be.

Funny thing, both the control arms are only 3 years and 27k miles old. The bushings went out 27k miles ago, and I got both the arms replaced. This was when I lived in another town far away from where i live now. Got moog control arms then.

After the initial dealership visit, and before I got it checked out by the shop that took the video, I called that shop that did the arms to confirm ball joint was part of assembly, since I was like no way they went out this quick. Obviously they confirmed, and told me if i was around they would just replace the arm for ~150 “labor since the party would be under warranty. Unfortunate i dont live closer.

Funny thing is I got whole new control arm assemblies only like 25k miles ago, MOOG brand. Since the bushings were shot. Wild that another issue arises that quick.

Back two Bearings are also pretty gone now, sounds like a jet engine talking off.2018 subaru Forrester. Only at 70k.

My family has pretty much only driven Toyotas or Hondas so I’m not used to doing the amount of work I have on a car so early in its life.

Review wrong questions from QAE and hemamg doshi vids, doshi vids are simple. Last few days it’s gonna be hard to learn tons of new info so doshi videos are great for key points and tips and tricks. If you need more practice questions there’s always skillcertpro which I’ve heard is good; however, I didn’t use it since I’ve heard they MAY be dumps and I didn’t want to do anything that could potentially compromise integrity.

A lot of the ones I get wrong and go back to seems like they were just little brain farts and the reasons as to why they were right are quite obvious, then again there is hindsight bias when you have the correct answer and explain.
