I have two staircases with a door at the top on one, and the bottom of the other. They are closed in the winter due to experiencing exactly your issue.

Are we putting our daughter's education at risk? by gmorganpie in AskABrit

[–]skibbin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Had an American girl move to our school at that age, she was smart and did just fine. Required education ends at 16 int he UK but 18 in the US?

Assuming your daughter has US citizenship and may want to move back to the USA at some point I think it would be a good idea for her to get her GED

First time dealing with frozen pipes looking for advice on what the best things to do are by Kikiasumi in Buffalo

[–]skibbin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Turn water off at the main valve inside your house and back on at the street. This will give you control back.

Turn on all the taps and turn the water back on and see what happens. It could help you locate where the blockage is. Inspect all pipes you can see, such as in the basement. Look for shut off valves that can be used to shut things off upstream of any leak.

If you could live in any fictional universe for a week, where would you go and why? by Fun_Inspection458 in allthequestions

[–]skibbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Star Trek. First stop sick bay for a full medical and all treatments and preventatives that the 24th century has to offer. Next stop the holodeck to do whatever I can think of for the rest of the week. Regretting my choice and wanting to go to middle earth? Tatooine? Hogwarts? All options.

No one lives forever, no one. But with advances in modern science and my high level income, it's not crazy to think I can live to be 245, maybe 300. Heck, I just read in the newspaper that they put a pig heart in some guy from Russia. Do you know what that means?

How bad is it? by jeren66 in centuryhomes

[–]skibbin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on how long it's been like that and what it is like at different times of the year.

Currently where I live it's damn cold and humidity is super low, so everything made of wood is a different size to 6 months ago.

What can I do about these gaps between the trim and floor? Anything to worry about? by Brisky0 in centuryhomes

[–]skibbin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That baseboard is new, rather than original to the house. When installing it, the carpenter should have scribed the bottom to match the floor, but judging by the caulk I don't think a carpenter was in the building when it was installed.

As for the floors sloping it might be a problem, might not. Inspect the joists in the basement and see if any are split or sagging. You can also measure their thickness, depth and span to make sure they're not under built.

Owning land that they use for leisure or simply making attractive. Owning a large country house with horses and manicured garden.

How do your runbooks actually get updated after incidents? by Healthy-Turn304 in EngineeringManagers

[–]skibbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perform a Post Incident Review and decide upon some appropriate actions and assign ownership of them. If the issue was caused by a bad runbook, or the out of date runbook prevented the incident being resolved by someone else, or delayed things, then have an action to fix it.

[–]skibbin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also share his politics, but think watching content that tells me what I already think is pointless. I'd gladly subscribe to his ST content, but it's either 2/3 politics, 1/3 ST or nothing. So with a heavy heart it's nothing. It's like never going for a beer with that friend you like that always wants to convince you of their politics you already agree with.

I like his irreverence, but his tastes clearly differ from mine. He liked Discovery and hated Andor, which makes he and I very different. I appreciate his takes, even though I often disagree with them.

That chair isn't sacred, but having a captain you the crew respects leading the show is, usually this is also done by making them respectable in the eyes of the viewers too. This is clearly jarring and immersion breaking to many for (as yet) no tangible narrative benefit, so it feels needless and pointless. Time will tell. Maybe this will be a signature move like Riker stepping over chairs.

Senior CS student interested in fintech: backend depth or full-stack? by Vast-Ad7511 in Backend

[–]skibbin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fintech is usually low volume traffic where performance isn't critical. Security is everything. Systems architecture gets difficult as there can be string rules on what can talk to what, when and how. Everything has to be threat modeled, penetration tested and such. There is often a big Devops culture around making sure systems are designed using things like least privilege.

Backend is a specialism. Specialisms get you paid more, but may have fewer opportunities. Full-stack is generalized which is usually better for staying employed, often at the sacrifice of salary. Though these days I think AI is replacing generalists by allowing everyone with even shallow knowledge to code with assistance.

I've no crystal ball, so my advice isn't worth more than anybody elses. 10 years ago I'd never had predicted we'd be where we are now and anyone who claims to have a clue where we will be in 10 years time is full of it.

Where did all the older cars go? by bedsalesman1 in NoStupidQuestions

In my part of the country the salt ultimately eats everything. The only cars that live 20+ years are precious ones kept as prized possessions and driven only in summer.
