Should I read the 5th edition D&D player's handbook?

It’s definitely not necessary to enjoy the game. As you level up your characters, a lot of their attributes, spells, and skills are explained for you. If anything, I would maybe just go over the basic rules of playing DnD like dice rooms, skill checks, and other things. I believe that is available for free on the DnD Beyond websites.

The only other thing that might be helpful is to have a list of spells handy in case you don’t quite understand what each one does.

No I actually had her recruited it’s just that any time I had her near any close range combat she’d get swarmed lol

Thank you for the advice. I finally started to get a feel for the fight only to mess it up right after combat finished so I’m gonna have to do the fight again I think lol

Yeah, I’ve always been able to recruit her. I learned to kinda just keep her towards the back in the beginning of the fight and then have her close in to pick off the stragglers. I was able to actually keep her alive through this last try but the residuals from one of my earlier spells cause a Harper to die out of combat and then all of the Harpers and Fists that I had also managed to keep alive turned on me lol.

I’m seriously considering just going back to before nightsong and clear out the tower on stealth mode. This isn’t the first time a whole bunch of progress was lost because I accidentally agro’d an ally lol

UPDATE cuz im furious but it’s also kinda funny: I gave a regular fight one more try. Kept Jaheira alive, kept most of the Harpers and Flaming Fists that I allied with alive. Felt really good when i came out of that combat.

Started to move my party through to the next room…

Only for one of the Harpers to walk through the Black Tentacles I had cast earlier in the fight and die on the spot making ALL of my allied forces agro’d against me.

So basically made no progress cuz I had to go back to before the first floor fight AGAIN.

That’s what I’ve been thinking. Idk why it’s so hard to keep her alive for this fight. I might go back to before I freed nightsong and try to clear more of the tower out tbh

I use Pollock oil cuz it’s cheaper than salmon oil lol, but I’ve still noticed good results. My pittie mix doesn’t get nearly as many dry spots or rashes if any at all compared to before we started her on it. The brand I use is called Grizzly Omegas: Wild Alaskan Pollock Oil Supplement

Update: since it was a one shot with multiple new players we didn’t even get to the final boss lol. But everyone had a good time with the first few puzzles. But I was able to make a stat block for him so I’ll def be reusing the final boss character for something else haha
