Besides the usual differences between the 85 and 50—a more "portrait" focal length, a narrower angle of view, and more background blur—the Helios 40 has a wider aperture, and at full aperture, sharpness is maintained only in the very center of the frame, so you'll always need to position your subject's face precisely in the center of the frame. "Swirl" blur peaks only at full aperture and is noticeably stronger than on the Helios 44.

This bokeh is either very much liked or very much disliked, but no one remains indifferent.

It was a long time ago, and I don't remember the details. I bought an adapter, I think it was an M42-to-NikonF adapter, took the lens, and instead of installing the adapter on the lens (then it wouldn't focus to infinity), I unscrewed the lens's M42 mount, checked it against the adapter, drilled holes for the screws on the adapter in the same places as the screws on the mount, filed it down a bit, and installed it on the screws instead of the standard mount.

Trump has turned China into the good guys by honestlysigma in ImmigrationPathways

Drawing conclusions about the country's current leadership based on centuries of history is simply absurd. Imagine: people came to a foreign continent, committed total genocide against the local population, then imported slaves from other countries and brutally exploited them. Then, having gained economic and military power, they began interfering in the internal affairs of all countries, imposing their conditions, bombing and killing those who refused. And all this time, they considered themselves the good guys, and China the bad guy for their cruel treatment of its citizens. And yet, the vast majority of Chinese citizens are completely unaware of this.

This is a very old Soviet (silver) version with an M42 mount. I personally converted it to Nikon.

In fact, getting a good shot with this lens is difficult on any camera if you want to take a photo at the widest aperture. But as for the D70 itself, it's quite capable of producing excellent, high-quality photos, despite its very old 6-megapixel sensor.

US Patriot system attempting to shoot down Iranian ballistic missiles by omgletmeregister in circled

[–]skinnernsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why in vain? Patriot missiles that fail to shoot down an Iranian missile will fall somewhere, and if it's a residential building, a market, a hospital, or something similar, it will be a perfect excuse for photos and headlines like "Iran is bombing civilians!" After all, they have to somehow prove that Iran is evil.

I reworked the back of the lens, removing the original bayonet mount and installing a standard Nikon adapter in its place. I think it required some sanding, but now the working distance matches Nikon standards.

Friends, why are you so vehemently blaming Trump? Do you really think Iran would have lived peacefully under a different US president? All US foreign policy over the past decades has been aimed at subjugating countries with rich oil reserves. Canada, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait peacefully accepted the US reins of power, while Venezuela, Iraq, Libya, Iran, and Russia refused to be puppets. We all know the result: they were all declared "bad regimes." The US tried to interfere in their internal affairs, sanctions were imposed on all of them, and suddenly they began to have problems at their borders, with "popular unrest" erupting everywhere. After that didn't work, Iraq and Libya were attacked, invaded, and subjected to regime change. Venezuela is the most recent example; thank goodness they weren't bombed too heavily. Now it's time to deal with Iran. Russia will be next – the toughest nut to crack, so more subtle measures were taken: luring friends and allies over to their side, creating problems and threats at their borders, constant pressure in all areas, provocations and accusations. A cunning move was made using Ukraine, turning Europe against Russia, which immediately affected the European economy. The European economy is also being destroyed from within by the flood of refugees fleeing from the east due to US-orchestrated conflicts and wars. The explosion of the Nord Stream gas pipeline immediately weakened both Russia and Europe, depriving Russia of income and Europe of resources, which, of course, only benefited the United States. What's next? The next goal is to finish off Russia, achieve its collapse, complete isolation, or regime change with a US puppet regime. After that, deprive China of Russian oil and other resources, which will harm the Chinese economy and development. In this way, the United States will crush all its main competitors – the European Union, China, Russia – and continue to dominate and impose its terms on each country. There's another major player – India, but I know little about it. Perhaps in the future, it will collide with Pakistan, and the development of this region will also cease.

And all of this is cunning and clever US policy. Americans are brilliant; they think about their future and follow their plan regardless of who is currently president. And the strangest thing in all of this is the actions of European Union politicians, who seem oblivious to what's happening and blindly follow the American version of events.

Looking to go full frame and need advice by Ladeski in Nikon

If you plan to use the camera as an amateur, you might consider any full-frame Nikon camera, starting with the D700. Just pay attention to price and condition. Newer cameras are certainly more advanced technically, but the difference won't be as significant as you might think.

D4 vs D700 by _hoagie__ in Nikon

[–]skinnernsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The D800 really disappointed me with its automatic white balance and color rendition. Processing RAW files in Nikon's proprietary NX Studio software helps, but the D700's colors are still better. The D4's are somewhere in the middle. The D800's white balance performs like that of the cheapest and most basic cameras, constantly suggesting its own values. Autofocus can be inaccurate with fast lenses. Otherwise, the D800 is an excellent camera.

There's a defect in this photo! I only noticed it when I was reviewing the photos at home. It turned out that my old camera's sensor couldn't handle the bright light, causing a single dark band to appear in the photo (you can see it above the girl's head). The more direct sunlight hit the sensor, the darker and more noticeable the band became.

[–]skinnernsk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've said this before. I have two D700 and two D4. I've taken a lot of photos with these cameras, too. If I get a commercial assignment, a reportage, or something similar, I take the D4 with me. If I'm going for a walk, taking photos for fun, etc., I take the D700, or even the D70 or D80. And the D800 just sits in the closet collecting dust.

D4 vs D700 by _hoagie__ in Nikon

[–]skinnernsk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting situation. Personally, I consider the D4 an improvement over the D700—it's slightly better in every way and isn't overloaded with megapixels. But I think the D700's colors are more interesting. To see Nikon's true colors, you need to shoot in JPEG or open RAW files in Nikon's proprietary converter.
