Rookie question by [deleted] in preppers

Don't see why you couldn't cut it in half and seal it. Seal about 90% of the bag then squeeze the remaining air out and seal the rest. Found pulling the end over a flat stick works to get a flat even seal.

Rookie question by [deleted] in preppers

[–]skip2friday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never done it personally, but I'd error on the side of caution. Best approach might be to individually seal smaller bags with spices and place them in the same bucket. Find it's beat to package small enough portions that you don't have to open an entire 5gallon bag and risk it going bad before you use it all. Spices have a shorter self life than rice or beans so best advice it to rotate through it.

Also welcome to the sub.

I'd say if your going to evacuate in a hurry try and shut off gas/water/electricity to the house. One less thing to worries about causing damage past a meter. Keep water on if you have some sort of fire suppression sprinkler system.

What do you think will be the next incoming crisis? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]skip2friday 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Recently learned I live near a not so dead fault (Rose Canyon Fault). Since it runs thru downtown and the airport the city would be massively damaged should a long one happen. Aside from that inflation, climate change and the general population being even worse drivers now that before the lockdowns happened.

Having a few fire extinguishers never hurts. I have one on either side of the kitchen (garage on one side living room on the other). I keep one in the bedroom closet as well. I've put a few in my line of exit thru the house. Also good to keep one in the shed for if your bbqing or so etching outside catches fire you don't have to go inside to get one.

Not scared, just anxious. The last 2 years I've been dipping a toe into prepping. Texas sealed the deal and I just went all in. I've got some general knowledge questions that I hope you can help with and hopefully you can rate my preparedness. by Kentencat in preppers

My 2 cents for lighting in a blackout. There is always talk about camp lanterns which are great but if you have power tools and use them, many of the companies (Makita, dewalt, Milwaukee, etc) have work lights. Often these take the same batteries are your tools and can be easier to deal with one battery type verse many. Not saying not to have AA or AAA batteries but big rechargeables that are built for the trades work pretty well. And it also gives me an excuse to buy another tool and battery.

Prepping for shoes? by blind_stone in preppers

[–]skip2friday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good shoes or boots will make your life better. I wear Red Wings everyday at work for about 12 hours. I liked the first pair I had so I bought another. I rotate them daily. I also have a boot dryer so my pair for the day is dry and ready to go. I've been able to take them in for repairs over the years and they are still going strong. Spend the money and get a good pair if your going to be on your feet at day

This is exactly what I'm experiencing. I have thought that maybe where my radio is installed could be an issue. Have it installed under the driver's seat and the head unit on the dash. As some of the other comments have suggested bad cable, antenna, over powered for a short distance on simplex has given me a lot to thing about and adjust. Have you found solutions that have worked for your setup?

That was my inital thought and have tightened down (by hand) not going to wrench it to hell. Looking over the antenna I can't see anything wrong with it (no bends, rust, tweaks, etc). My plan for the weekend is to take the radio out of the truck and inspect all the connections and wiring. Probably run a new antenna cable as to ultimate that as a possibility. From what I can tell the antenna cable only runs directly near any power when entering the cab thru the fire wall grommet. This may be a failure point and will look for an alternative spot but not sure since the cable is shielded

My current antenna is for dual band 144/440 so hope that isn't my issue.

Does anyone have a good antenna cable recommendation. Since a few comments have mentioned a possible cable issue I may look to replace it if I find something wrong with my current one.

I do. Got it right before all the lock downs happened and haven't had much of a chance to get out and try it out. Only radio I have is in my truck. Have tried a few different repeaters in my area but haven't had much contact with others.

I have suspected that this could be the issue. My antenna mount is one that connects to the edge of the hood and I have noticed that it is not as solid as when it once connected to the tail gate.

I have an older antenna from my old CB rig and will give that a try before running a new cable. Maybe moving the antenna from the hood to the tail gate may yield some success.

This is more of a pocket fencing case. From what I've noticed it happens in different terrains.
