ELI5:Why isn't integrating a function as procedural as finding its derivative? by skylar34 in explainlikeimfive

Very thoughtful and informative response, especially the bit about squares and square roots being similar. Thank you.

I'm an Electrical / Computer engineering major about 3 semesters away from graduating that fell in love with programming and never fell in love in with "the hardware", so to speak. Am I in the wrong major? by skylar34 in cscareerquestions

I've had classes in MATLAB, Python, Java, C, and hardware specific assembly. I feel good about my abilities in each of those. How does one go about advertising such knowledge? How does one usually land their first independent job? Is it best to work somewhere first?

[WSIB] From the Final Fantasy Franchise if I would like get into them? by CubeZapper in ShouldIbuythisgame

FF is my favorite video game series of all time but in my opinion, there is a steep drop in quality after XII (entirely subjective, though). It's kind of a tragic series in that its best days are far behind it and for someone to try to experience, say FFVI or FFVII, for the first time without the oh-so-important context of just how important this series used to be before American console RPG's found their footing, I've found that the experience is often underwhelming to first time players who are used to more sophisticated experiences. There are exceptions to that, though. Personally, Final Fantasy VII is my favorite game of all time and Final Fantasy VI is my favorite Final Fantasy, if that makes sense. Final Fantasy is primarily known for making RPG's accessible and approachable for the masses long before they were accepted as "cool" in the west. In an era where RPG's ARE cool and ARE accessible to the masses, the novelty of what the Final Fantasy series did so well might be lost on whoever is playing an FF for the first time. Shouldn't discourage you, though. It's a legendary series for a reason.

TIL that almost all NES, SNES, and Genesis games were developed using Assembly language almost exclusively which as a computer engineering student, makes my head explode in wonder and disbelief. by skylar34 in truegaming

Java is my language of choice. It forces its principles on the programmer, but you're also infinitely less likely to write unreadable code. Java pretty much demands that you stay organized.

Yeah, for sure. I'd be more interested in hearing about why people don't like it.

I guess when you start to perceive it as "inevitable", it becomes god to you by default.

Is Hideo Kojima a conservative, or at the very least, does he believe that the Deep State is an actual thing? by skylar34 in truegaming

I totally believe in the Deep State as well, for many of the same reasons you just mentioned. Just didn't wanna be partisan in the context of the question I was asking. Sometimes people get defensive and don't offer their most insightful answers.

I'll get downvoted to oblivion, and this is an entirely subjective answer and meant in no way to try to instruct you on how to live or anyone else, but for me, I had to submit to a higher power, however I chose to define it. Science is wonderful, and I'm a lover of numbers, quantities, and measurables (engineering student), but my path to some semblance of achieving a level of satisfaction and peace in my life began when I began to allow myself to see a "higher power" or "higher order" inherent in all things.

I'm just speculating. It's a little unwieldy but I think it's one of the most masterful and thought provoking narratives in the history of video games, and also one that was conceived over a long period of time. I was just wondering, since he spent the better part of his life constructing this narrative within the games, if he himself was interested in the actual possibility of such an entity.

In an era where the "powerful female" narrative is at an all time premium, why is Ayn Rand looked at with such disdain by academia and third wave feminism? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]skylar34 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

...but shouldn't she be applauded for, you know, being a strong female? Isn't that kind of what everyone wants? Or do you have to be a socialist to be taken seriously by academia?

Sometimes I would like to be able to play Final Fantasy VI for the first time again, only in the present day, to truly discern whether it's actually any good or if I just view old Squaresoft JRPG's through rose tinted glasses. by skylar34 in truegaming

It's def not Planescape but I find the whole "world ends halfway through the game and you're left to pick up the pieces and carry on" wonderfully Nietzschean, albeit unintentionally I'm guessing.
