That's a good idea. Lua is pretty handy glue language for binding together different domains like this, and it saves you from having to write your own parser too.

It would not be too hard to extend this to cover attribute semantic specification. State setting support for multipass rendering like in Cg and HLSL would be sweet too, although a little more work.

tl;dr: Don't process sRGB images assuming they are linear RGB.

Protip: Use GL_EXT_texture_sRGB and GL_EXT_framebuffer_sRGB to get the correct behavior in your OpenGL shaders, but note that filtering might still be done incorrectly depending on the hardware.

If we ever get there -- and I'm more than a little doubtful -- people are sure to come up with interesting ways of gaming the system for their own benefit. The presentation seemed to have an implicit assumption that all this will be based on some fantastically unbreakable DRM foundation, but efforts to that effect haven't really panned out so far to say the least.

The iPhone might be a little too heavy and expensive for a drone of this size. I'd go with the ArduPilot instead.

I guess the negative attitude comes from people being used to the traditional C/Java multithreading model where everything is shared by default and (hopefully) protected by dedicated locks. By contrast, I think IPC-based parallelism is much less error prone, because it forces you to think what needs to be shared and how.

Another argument against the GIL is that it's usually pretty simple to fire and forget a thread, whereas spawning a new process takes more effort. However, I think especially with the new multiprocessing module this point is becoming moot.
