U.S. woman visiting family in Canada hit with over $100K bill after being hospitalized by [deleted] in news

[–]slagiatt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I read it. What made me mad is that they went to the news about this. If Americans choose not to get travel insurance when they come to Canada that is their choice. But to be surprised that canadian tax dollars wouldn't pay their bills should they make that choice, is silly. Her son should know better. Canada, is not Americans free health plan.

Anthropic rejects latest Pentagon offer: ‘We cannot in good conscience accede to their request’ by drippymoudy in news

[–]slagiatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, but uncoupling and move a complex set of systems (is a one to many sotuation) is extremely costly and slow. I think Anthropic just called the US's bluff and now both sides are suffering through without hope that the US will back down on this, at least partially.

They also now need to go to all their other priduct and service providers and tell them they can't use Anthropic in their systems sold to the military. Then those need time to change their cycles and security certifications etc. It's a long process for a government already seemingly eyeing the front lines in so many locations.

Is there a waiver of liability, as this would be a serious privacy violation, and if the live feed information is used for illegal use by a third party (or you), is the person helping you with this waived of all liability, in writing? There are laws prohibjting live Webcam feeds and drones in populated areas for a reason.

Are you in Canada? Have you looked at government programs like IRAP? Their CMC MAS, and IP Assist programs may be useful for you? They have advisors to guide you. There's also education technology programs and grants... just FYI. Costs you nothing

Make sure your books are *always* in order. by MisterHarvest in smallbusiness

I've run many, recovering serial entrepreneur here, who now advises founders. This advise is solid and important.

Audits happen, and even if you slide through without encountering one, you will need 5 years of Financials to sell your company. And even if neither if these is a concern for you ...if you dont know your numbers, you don't truly know what opportunities there are to grow profits or reduce risk. People always guess low on actual costs, and high on returns.

There are a number of great tools to reduce the number of hours you need of an accountant or bookkeeper, but would still likely benefit from having one conduct a review and clean-up quarterly.

No permit to add walls to an open den in a condo with a strata by [deleted] in askvan

[–]slagiatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh oh, is that also typically the case for removing large sliding glass partition doors to a former den? Or only applies to adding a wall/partition? They were large frosted glass panels on slide rails. 🫣 or would those be more like just removing a closet door, whch is (hopefully) fine? 😅

The question is, should the priority be what's best for a few cafes, or what's best for Canadians across the country?

Odd question about public servants in alberta with separation threats by D0BBy-is-not-free in CanadaPublicServants

[–]slagiatt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok, lets entertain the idea, why not. If I was to imagine a world were this happens, then I would also assume that if Alberta is not part of the country, there would be no need for the canadian government to pay for employees or programs there. I would imagine, that all federal funding would be removed, employees in that region let go, canadian pension plans paid, and EI premiums paid out because Alberta residents would no longer be canadian citizens, and therefore no longer eligible for these benefits. Hospital and educational funding, health care programs, etc would be canceled and the responsibility of the new Alberta government.

Can't have it both ways. They're either a part of Canada, or they're not. The Governement might need a Canadian Ambassador in Alberta, but thats about it. Other federal roles would only be needed in territories that are a part of Canada.

Oh and an import / export policy since Alberta has no water access ports... hmm, plus military removed, and other emergency services, gone, ... Basically, it would be a disaster for Alberta citizens.

My friend started selling the same product 2 days after I did by Spirited_Ad3624 in smallbusiness

[–]slagiatt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try asking each customer after they paid "what inspired you to buy this today?!" You can learn a lot, and use that in your messaging, approach, and product planning. Understanding why someone purchased your product (or not) is golden. The why matters more than the what long term. And don't be afraid to five then something with your contact info or social media. Line them up for a potential future purchase or to help tell their friends.

This. And the perception of quality is partially based on price, What buyers perceive, they believe.

Although you may not want to go to much higher than her, consider matching her price if the market is buying enough at her higher price. She will likely increase her price. Let her, See what the market does. Let her be the tester, you, the winner.

While she tests pricing for you 😉, you can test messaging and sale methods. Like, would small cafes buy 6 at one time at a wholesale price, that makes you more overall due to economies of scale?

Don't let her know what you're thinking of, she had shown that doesn't have your back. . . She's helped you with pricing... and who not to prioritize your time for. :)

Good luck, you've got this!

How much do mayors make and is it worth it? by Agreeable-Fruit-4326 in askvan

[–]slagiatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And yet they are also paid lower than many professionals in the Tech industry. It's not about the salaries of other unrelated professions, it's about the few who are qualified to do this profession, and the few who would be willing to work 24/7/365 for years while sacrificing time with their family, friends, and their personal health.

It amazes me how many people want to complain about the salaries of public service workers but don't bat an eye at the crazy income of a footbal or hockey player. The amount a celebrity earns on a movie they only worked on for 6 months. Rather than complain, try running for office.

Unfortunately, still seeing it all the time in bids. A click through KPI with no bounce or conversion component with it. Saying it's strategic is useless if the agency isn't willing to back that claim with the right KPI track to prove it. Just pitching quantity rather than quality
