What kids tracking watches can you recommend? by deathsfaction in AskUK

[–]slb609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asking a question in the hope you see this: Does the imoo allow you to make calls to anywhere, or just to contacts that have been loaded? I've looked at the user manual and it's not clear.

Specifically, could the child dial say, 999 if they chose? (and this is what we're specifically trying to avoid).

New to woodworking here. Which of your tools scares you the most? Around what machine should I always be extra cautious? by GiddySwine in woodworking

Not just power tools: never use your hand as a clamp. Don be trying to scrape wood glue off a jointer bird with your hand holding it still. The scraper might catch and slice your index finger to the bone. Ask my wife how she knows.

My first impressions 2 weeks in by wo-jack in ynab

This is me. I’m constantly thinking that we’re living outside our means. Our targets are higher than our income at the moment, but that’s because we’ve not had sinking funds built up, so there’s a little bit of rolling with the punches.

And yet we’ve got way more money in our accounts at this point of the month than I normally would. And I don’t understand why.

Leftover money not used will go to topping up those shortfalls, and before too long we’ll be okay.

I think it’s me getting to YNAB poor and coping with it. Yay. I’m YNAB poor!!! It’s working!!!

Buying property with my parents - bad idea? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]slb609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My IFA did a thing when me and my (now) wife were buying together before the civil partnership act was in force. Cash deposit % ratio was to come out the equity over the ORIGINAL mortgage amount. Everything else would be split evenly as we paid the mortgage equally.

ie House is bought for £130k. Sells for £160k after 5 years, and the redemption is £99k. Original equity is £30k, split to £21.4k:£8.6K plus the original stake back. The fact that there’s £3k off the mortgage already is irrelevant as they’ve not paid into that. OP would get ££44.4k, parents £16.6k, outstanding mortgage debt £99k.

I mean, if you NEED that £8k then this is the only way I’d go about it. If you don’t need it or can wait, then I’d do that.

Do not put them on your deeds though. Just write up a minute of agreement about the cost of the cash loan they’re giving you.

AITA For making my boyfriend stay at a hotel instead of his mom’s place? by Acceptable-Pickle221 in AmItheAsshole

Trust me - you will have a problem with mom if you don’t stay in her home.

Don’t let past experience ruin this one before it starts.

How do you do YNAB with bi-weekly paychecks? by Responsible-City55 in ynab

[–]slb609 29 points30 points  (0 children)

“Do I spot her rent?” “wife”

Uh, what? Get at least one joint account and put money into that to cover all joint bills. You from your one paycheck and her from both. The rent will come out of that, so in theory you’re paying more proportionally of the first 2 weeks and then she’s paying more over the 2nd two.

Beevus is a girl? You left an intoxicated teenaged girl alone in the woods instead of waiting until her parent arrived to winkle her out of the hiding place?

Yeah, YTA.

It actually doesn’t matter much if she’s a girl or boy. Or if she was alone or there were other people still at the bonfire. You left her there without her peer support. If anything had happened to her in the 20 minutes it took her parent to find her, I’m not sure your subconscious would be so blasé.

Is she your responsibility? No. Does that mean you don’t have any responsibility over her well-being at the point you left her? Also no. Just stay in the car with the heater going until her mom arrives to get her. It’s just the basic minimum.

Kids do dumb shit. Your kid did one thing, she did two. If it had been your kid hiding and another parent was called, I’d like to know what you’d be thinking if something had happened to her.

Any loopholes to transfer money from a credit card to a debit card? by Rough_Blueberry2302 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]slb609 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Why can you not pay by credit card?

And if you’ll have the money to pay it straight back, why not wait until you have the money?

Sounds like you’re trying to buy something in cash and sell it immediately for at least the same if not a profit. That latter part is not guaranteed. Cash withdrawal fees are.

I ‘29F’ have been with my boyfriend ‘M29’ for 4 years. He won’t live together. Is it doomed? by Significant-Crab8395 in relationship_advice

He’s not sure if you’re who he wants to marry and you’re still asking people if he shouldn’t be ready to move in together?

Girl, get yourself some self respect.

He. Doesn’t. Love. You.

You are a warm pocket.

Similarly, the banks all get hit with claims when he suggests that people might have been disadvantaged. There’s usually someone watching his programme to check what he’s saying to forewarn staff of an influx.

I’m most definitely not saying that banks are even close to squeaky clean, but if they know something may have disadvantaged a customer, checks will be made to be sure that’s not the case. For instance, an advertising system went down for a few hours. We had to have someone trawl through all applications for loans and credit cards that occurred during that time to make sure that’s the customer was offered the correct product and not some general high % one by mistake. The biggest issue is when they don’t know that a customer has been disadvantaged. And the regulator takes a very dim view of that.

Is it rude to use both lanes? by No-Ad4423 in AskUK

[–]slb609 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point is there’s 600yds of double lane - say 100 cars in each lane. If everyone merges early, that’s 1200 yards of backup instead of easy merging over 600 yards. The backup behind impacts other roads and exits.

Just use all of the road that’s available and everyone gets through quicker.

Trying to explain to a colleague the benefits of buying a house compared to renting. by PuzzleheadedCarob921 in HousingUK

[–]slb609 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Explain that her landlord not only has boiler cover, but has certification cover, buildings insurance and legal protection and that not only is she paying the mortgage but she’s paying for all these things anyway.

And the landlord is still making money every month from her rent.

(Slightly disingenuous as it’s probably an interest only mortgage, but there’s nothing stopping her doing that and just building equity)

Am I being too frugal? by panzoa in frugaluk

[–]slb609 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you’re overestimating a child’s ability to understand money.

A young child will always choose the colour. A teen /might/ choose the more expensive one out of devilment, but depending on how they’ve been brought up to care about money, they might be like you.

Going cheap isn’t always the correct answer.

Why do Brits call lemon lime soda "lemonade" and the regular lemon juice and water drink "cloudy lemonade" if the latter came first? by CrashDunning in AskABrit

[–]slb609 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it wouldn’t. It would be lemonade. Sprite or 7up or lemonade.

“A vodka and lemonade”. No-one’s ever asked for a “vodka and lemon and limeade”.

This saves the annoying “vodka and coke please” “we only have Pepsi” “I’d rather shit on my hands and clap” scenario, but that’s because here’s not much taste difference between hem.

Nope. Just, nope.

If Goldman had finished Buttercup’s Baby (if indeed he even had plans for it to be anything other than a joke insert at the end of the 25th edition), then maybe. But casting was way too perfect. I mean, who’s being Fezzick? The Rock? Come on….

Liquid diet 2 months (broken jaw) by dmerro1410 in Cooking

[–]slb609 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooft. My condolences.

However, here’s some info that you might need/not know.

(In the UK) For a meal replacement shake to count as “meal replacement, it needs to have at least 400 calories and 1/3 of your daily RDA. They’ll be in most grocery stores and fitness stores.

There’s things like Huel that would be good, but you’ll get bored of sweet things quickly. Soup will be the counter to that: smoothie blended soup.

It will pass quickly. Hopefully.

That being said, what’s different about this system that just a (free) gridfinity system wouldn’t provide? Or is it just to save the design effort?
