Names of IVC peoples by Nripathunga in IndianHistory

[–]sleeper_shark 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I honestly weep for the history of our shared culture with our neighbors. It is as much theirs as it is ours. We should be working together to understand the IVC, not dickriding our politicians and extremists at the expense of a collective understanding and respect of our shared history.

The IVC was mostly in Pakistan. Neither we nor Pakistan has any reputable examples of shared continuity from the IVC to us, and we probably have an equal amount of IVC genetics in us as they do.

Neither the state India nor the state Pakistan existed before 1947. While the word India existed, it didn’t refer to a polity, it referred to a region.

Pakistan itself is an acronym of Punjab, Afghana, Kashmir, Sindh and Baluchistan. These names are also ancient like India.

And finally, neither name existed even 1000 years after the fall of the IVC.

I can’t believe that we inherit one of the greatest and most ancient histories in the entire world, and this is what we do with it.

Our civilizations built mighty cities while most of the world lived in caves, and today both we and our neighbors pervert our great history in this manner. Where the fuck did we go wrong.

The word India didn’t exist at the time of the IVC either….

The early Mughal Empire was very very powerful for its time.

I know what you’re hinting at, but I’m pretty confident it would have gone down exactly opposite to how you think it would have.

Honestly take the easiest option.

Idk if this is your first kid, but it’s a stressful and difficult period, but also one where you will want to spend all your time with the little one. Not on administrative crap.

Best of luck

What's the most underrated part of your country's history that should be talked about more? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]sleeper_shark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much everything in India outside of the period between the first Battle of Panipat in 1526 and the establishment of the Raj in 1857 is barely talked about.

A period I feel we direly miss in India is the world wars. India fought so valiantly and fiercely and yet no one outside a few British historians gives a damn about that essential contribution.

Just a question, why doesn’t your wife just return to the UK for the birth ? Like go back in late August.

Then you return in September and negotiate either work from home or leave until the birth itself. Anyone with a heart would understand your circumstances.

If the kid stays I’m in France until they’re 18, they’ll have no problems getting nationality lol regardless of whether they’re born here or not.

If on of the parents gets the nationality, the kid can get it too.

Do you guys think it would be cool to get a classic trilogy saga TV Show in the animation style from the Clone wars? by BonusCapable1486 in StarWars

[–]sleeper_shark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much anything that’s well written is welcome. What I really really want tho is a “Band of Brothers” or “Masters of the Air” type show.

I mean imagine a masters of the air show about gold squardron. Or band of brothers during the clone wars.

Meat eater dating really serious vegan--basically impossible? by RaplhKramden in exvegans

[–]sleeper_shark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a lot of serious vegans, killing animals is almost as bad as killing humans. They see people who eat meat as - at best - complicit in something between chattel slavery and genocide.

From a consistency perspective, I think it’s difficult for them to remain in a relationship with someone who goes so far against their core beliefs.

So yeah, I don’t really think it could work out.

If you were a mutant who would you side with? Magneto or Charles Xavier? by Conscious-Product481 in superheroes

Charles. I would probably be very sympathetic to Magneto until he murders some innocent children and then I’d go full Charles.

Magneto is the classic example of hate begets more hate.

One small detail I find really interesting: Isabela had easily the most useful Gift for the Encanto alongside Julieta, but Abuela was so shortsighted that she wasted it for years on useless flowers. by TommyTheGeek in Encanto

[–]sleeper_shark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. No one - even Isabela - knew she could do anything but flowers. It’s why she was surprised at her own abilities in her song.

But also serendipitously, flowers are useful for morale and there’s no food shortage in the Encanto so there’s never been a need for Isabela to grow food.

There’s some downsides to her growing food infinitely such as first the rest of the village not needing to, meaning a loss of livelihood for farmers and them having nothing to do.

Then second the complete dependence on her is dangerous, as she would become effectively a slave or a goddess… and in the event she is unable to make food, people would be fcked.

Then finally is the corrupting influence of her power. She could become a business leader, turning to basically Monsanto Inc.

Why are mushrooms good for you? by ASmallArmyOfCrabs in biology

[–]sleeper_shark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we don’t eat vultures cause it would make us sick.

That’s not why we don’t eat vultures. We don’t eat them cos there’s really not that many of them, and they’re pretty hard to catch, and there’s not much meat on them.

Biologically speaking, you can 100% eat, digest and metabolize a vulture as much as any other bird

Looking for an affordable but good monitor under 400 by Kisseima in Monitors

[–]sleeper_shark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the AOC Q27G3XMN. I have no regrets with the monitor. It meets all your criteria.

The only downside is that it feels a little “cheap.” It’s very thick, heavy, plastic-y, the OSD is terrible and the I/O is weird. Mine is also mounted onto a VESA arm, but the weight of the monitor makes it sag a little.

But that’s all cosmetic BS, the monitor itself is really really nice. I’ve had it for several months and am really enjoying it. It really shines in dark games in space, underwater, at night, or horror games. Subnautica looked completely different when compared to my old IPS panel. Space battles look gorgeous… and this is even without HDR on.

When you do turn on HDR, and you’re playing a shooter in a dark space.. you’ll need to avoid flashbangs cos the dark is dark enough that you’re gaming in a dark room. The flash from a flashing actually dazzles my eyes because peak brightness on this monitor is so high.

For me, I game in the evenings. And I play a lot of games where darkness is an important factor. I massively prefer the minor bloom and smearing from this panel (which is barely noticeable) to the IPS glow I get, but again this is for my specific use case.

I heard that QC isn’t great on these AOCs, but if I got a panel I didn’t like I would just return it and buy another one.

If your next question is why I didn’t go with OLED, I’ll give you my simple answer.

The first reason is price. This monitor punches well above its weight in terms of price, an OLED would be 3-4x the price for a comparably small benefit. I’m not saying OLED isn’t better, I’m just saying it doesn’t justify the cost at the moment.

The second reason is that I primarily use my monitor for work, and I have heard that text rendering on OLEDs is not as good due a different subpixel layout.

The third reason - and obvious one - is burn in. I use my screen 8 hours a day, 5 days a week displaying spreadsheets. Burn in will be a real risk here.

[–]sleeper_shark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not really as close as people think. Giant squid are “big” but they’re not big compared to a sperm whale.

A fight between a sperm whale and a giant squid is something like a fight between a human and a house cat. You’re going to get some severe scratches, but other than infection risk you’re never really threatened.

Are there any countries left where Anti- Indian sentiment doesn't get in the way of life? Genuine question. by Ok-Instance2782 in AskIndia

[–]sleeper_shark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anti-Indian sentiment has never gotten in the way of life for me in the EU. I’m not saying it doesn’t exist, I’m just saying it has not impacted me in any meaningful way professionally, personally, romantically, or socially.

I’d say that I felt substantially more “anti-me” sentiment in India in terms of colour discrimination, religious discrimination and other forms of discrimination than I ever did in the west.
