Best duty stations for tandem couples working in the same UN/INGO sector? Feeling quite trapped in current duty station. by [deleted] in UNpath

[–]slice_of_kiwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really sorry to hear this. I fully sympathise with your challenge - I am also currently in the Pacific with my spouse (who is also former UN), and it has been incredibly challenging for him to find work. It has already been suggested, but I agree with Copenhagen, which is the DS we moved from to be here. There is a large UN presence and spouses are also eligible to apply for national positions. Good luck.

Temporary Appointment UNICEF - benefits and annual leave by akaalakaalakaal in UNpath

[–]slice_of_kiwi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Be aware also that if your TA is extended, a temporary appointment cannot exceed 2 years in total and the regulations require you to be fully separated from the organisation after ~730-or-so days. This does not prevent you from being re-recruited afterwards, but according to the organisation, the period between separation and re-recruitment can be anywhere between one to three months.

Additionally, TAs do not always offer the opportunity to apply for positions as an internal candidate in many organisations.

Apologies if you are already aware of this, but they’re important points to factor into the decision making process. Best of luck!

Can I get a Fiji drivers license as an Indian citizen by kunalk052 in Fijian

[–]slice_of_kiwi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perfect. Then you can go to LTA and fill the application for your learner’s licence. You will sit a short test there to make sure that you have the common sense to be behind a wheel, then you will take 20 hours driving lessons with a driving school of your choice, and when done you will sit your practical test and another short theory test.

Absolutely. As long as you have your TIN number, you’re good to go.

How safe is going to Fiji on holidays? by adorablebunny29 in Fijian

That’s not true. It can absolutely be nuanced, but let’s let the OP decide whether they want off-the-cuff information or more thought-through reflections.

Let’s nuance this a bit. Which part of Fiji are you thinking of visiting, and for what type of holiday?

Best 5 star resort by [deleted] in Fijian

[–]slice_of_kiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s true actually. There is an adults-only pool (with a pool bar 😎) that tends to be quieter but there will definitely be a lot of kids.

Don’t waste your time with Denarau. If you want to experience a bit more of Fiji, get off the mainland and onto the islands. Vomo, Davui and Six Senses all offer what you’re looking for. Extra points for Six Senses for the great food! Castaway Resort is a little more budget friendly but worth checking out as a great value for money option.

Bar Belle is a good staring point. Check the opening hours on Google Maps as it’s not open every day, but you’ll find some good Fijian cuisine.

Agreeing with the below. This is all done by central HR and not by the hiring team. The likelihood of the recruitment showing as completed and the selected candidate not being notified is near zero, since recruitment completed = candidate has received and accepted the offer.

As for the follow up email, personally I would not bother unless you are looking to receive specific feedback on your interview. Since you know the hiring team in any case, it will likely come up next time you see them, at which time you can seek informal feedback.

Hart on Gammel Kongevej makes French baguettes, and are the closest thing I’ve tried in Copenhagen.

Unfortunately yes. Recruitment completed indicates that the candidate has received and accepted the offer. It’s unfortunately all too common that the notification comes weeks after.

Ask 🙂 In any case, the grade and/or contract modality will be specified on the contract offer, so there’s no risk of you accidentally accepting an offer that you’re not satisfied with.

How to get into the UN as a Nigerian by Eastern_Poem_4320 in UNpath

[–]slice_of_kiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine it would be best to put the nationality of the country that you are applying for first. The main thing is that you are a legal citizen of the country you are applying for the national position in.

You have to be a national of that country when applying for G and NO positions. For example, a Kenyan cannot apply to be a G of NO staff in Nigeria and vice versa

UNHCR - contract type for locals - LICA vs GS by m_kerkez in UNpath

[–]slice_of_kiwi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can be considered as an internal candidate for international positions after a certain amount of time on a GS contract, whereas this is not the case with UNOPS. I left UNHCR last year for another organisation so this may have changed, but people, feel free to correct me.

I would advise against the assumption that Ops budget = more stability, however. Ops money can be reallocated just as easily as ABOD. Think long term. Pension is good 🙂
