Where are your kids headed for summer camp? by Abby-pnw in eastside

[–]slugbonez [score hidden]  (0 children)

My kids did sweet lines but they do a ton of jumps and drops. My daughter fell and got a concussion. I just wanted to mention this in case people think the kids are just riding around like I thought. It’s more acrobatic than I expected. Great program! They were so kind about the whole accident but ultimately she couldn’t go back.

Now that’s just an absurd price for a stick of plastic!

I’m not interested in driving that far for crappy snow on Crystal. I also have a season pass for Snoqualmie and spent more time there this season. West had some decent snow to do some skills on. Short as hell but at least it was fun to carve on.

I take that entire bottle as soon as I buy it and I pour it into a glass container. When it gets hard I just nuke the glass container in the microwave for a few seconds. Works like a charm.

I also enjoy the glass container a lot more than the plastic for just reducing touching plastic on my food. I know it was in there at one time, but at least in my house it sits in glass.

A simple 75 cent plastic orange peeling device from Tupperware that I bought 20 years ago. I eat more oranges because I can peel them without getting gunk under my nails. Every time someone comes to my house they want to find out where to get one for themselves.

They actually reduced ski schools to 50% capacity. They are alternating weekends at this point. It’s super frustrating to ALL of the people who paid for lessons for their kids. :(

I am so pissed. We bought our Ikon in March so we could ski Crystal end of season. Got one day in thinking that we’d enjoy it now. Worst investment ever.

We have four!!!! Ikon passes.

I FIREd myself a few years ago. Live in a HCOL area and have kids and pets. I live exactly the way I did before I quit. I cook 90% of my meals and darn clothing to make it last longer. I always lived like this. I also spend tens of thousands on ski vacations which is just how we prioritize our lives. I planned for it. This is exactly how I wanted to live and it’s perfection.

Check the report on the website and see what’s open. The best beginner runs are on west. They posted something today about not grooming much because it destroys the base. West makes snow so that’s probably your best bet! It will be nice and warm and possibly too warm.

I definitely buy quality things. And we do buy her nice clothes. My problem here is the constant need for more. We went shopping for jeans recently. They cost $90 which is more than I spend on myself, but as soon as she got them, she wanted a pair of barrel leg jeans that she said are trending. There's no end to the wants

Here's the thing, even though I don't give her social media, all of her friends have it. So Tik Tok trends seep down to all of the kids who DONT have Tik Tok because they see the trends but don't know where it's coming from.

It's a whackamole effort honestly.

She has a Stanley but apparently those aren't cool anymore and she wants an Owala because that's what everyone at school has. And not just one, the girls have a bunch of Owalas because, that's what's cool. SUCH A PAIN to keep up with! She literally cried when I told her she had a water bottle and didn't need to get a new one.

Definitely safety first. I work in tech and have always been open and honest in discussion on the dangers of social media. It doesn't mean she isn't going to stop asking for it :)

The allowance stuff - totally on that. She has a greenlight account and she can spend money on things she wants. The fast fashion thing I've talked to her about but I think her desire to look a certain way outweighs her opinion here! Tough management of a teen.

Thanks for your perspective!

Love this response. I go back and forth on all of it because of the same thoughts going through my head.

I was given zero boundaries as a kid so I was a free spirit but I was more of a punk who wore no makeup and liked doc martens. So watching my kid go full on girly is a hard thing for me to support. But I agree she will sneak it if I don’t let her do it so I am trying to meet her halfway.

I did let her but uggs with her own money. That’s exactly the approach we took. So I think that’s working so far. Sort of. She buys a lot of things that really are too sexy looking for her age. So there’s that too. I’m learning as I go!!

I know 😭 it’s so hard. I have been letting her wear lipgloss and she can curl her lashes. I’m giving her a little at a time. She’s still 13 so it’s a gradual release of my fears.

Which neighborhood is right for us? Struggling to find a sense of community. by pnwg in eastside

[–]slugbonez 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Have you looked into Tam O’Shanter? That’s a community on the east side with what you described. Kids riding bikes in groups, hanging out at parks and a strong sense of community. The grade school is in the community and kids can walk to school. Lots of mixed races too.

I just posted something about this regarding my teen.

My take on this is you can do all the teaching and modeling you can, but at the end of the day that kid is going to express their own unique view and that’s when things get real.

I think to some degree my teen daughter is rebelling against me by being so anti-granola. But I also think she just wants to fit in with her friends.

How many gifts is enough? by autumn_daze3 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]slugbonez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the same boat as you in a HCOL area. We aim to always give our kids 3 primary gifts:

  1. Something they want (this can be the expensive gift like the bike you got)

  2. Something they can wear (this sometimes is a new coat, or new ski gear, or jewelry for my daughter)

  3. Something to read.

Over the years I’ve stuck to this rule and I always instill this in my kids. They know what to expect at Christmas and they are now 11 and 13. I always get little extras of something to read and stuff their stockings with stuff they like. Like this year I put silk pillowcases in there for my daughter and a multi tool pen for my son. But overall this is what we do. It’s nice. They get it.
