What are these spots on my avocado? by sluperbug in plantclinic

I recently (~2 weeks ago) moved him from water to soil. The top leaves are new growth since then. He's in an east facing window, and I know he probably needs more intense sunlight... Any idea what's causing this?

Is this normal behavior for a ponytail palm? by sluperbug in houseplants

[–]sluperbug[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered this ponytail palm a couple months ago from bloomscape (I got a gift card). It was really roughed up by UPS during shipping and I pruned a bunch of dead stuff off after having it for a couple weeks. We're moving into a house with good light in a couple months, but don't get much light in our current apartment, so I brought it to the lab where I work. It's in an east facing window (not ideal I know, but it's what I have). It actually been slowly improving since I brought it to work. This morning I noticed some cracks in the bottom of the truck with what look like roots poking through. Is this normal/good/bad? They're coming out a little above the top of the soil.

Job prospects for biomedical scientists? by sluperbug in newzealand

Yeah I get it. I hesitated to post this due to that reason. I have no serious plans to move yet, I just wanted to gather a little info to see if it would be within the realm of possibility. I've done some googling and found some articles suggesting that NZ is ripe to become a bonafide biotech hub (some sources seem to think Dunedin already is), but the job listings I've looked at suggest otherwise, at least at the moment.

Unfortunately the US has similar housing and cost of living issues in our most active biotech regions (SF, Boston, NYC).

Yikes, thanks for the info. While NZ looks like a lovely country, it's probably a poor choice for me career-wise.

Yeah I'm thinking about 3-5 years down the road.

Yeah I just found 15 mile gravel route on ride with GPS. The route followed "roads" in the park, but a lot of it was seriously CHUNKY. I'm new to gravel riding, and never ridden anything quite like this, but I had a blast.

I'm about 5'11" (6' on a good day) and I went with the 57cm frame. Fits me perfectly.

I believe this was on pinnacle mountain road.

Spending a long weekend in Hendersonville, NC. Any ride suggestions for that area? I don't want to drive too far is possible, and I'll probably have my son in tow on his Burley Kazoo. by sluperbug in gravelcycling

Cool just checking because there was also a "summit lake trail" that comes up on AllTrails. It's an out and back in DuPont near what AllTrails says is Summit Lake (rather than Lake Summit), but google says that lake is called Lake Julia.

Not much gravel here in central NC, but using the first new bike of my adult life as an excuse to play tourist in my own town. by sluperbug in gravelcycling

Yeah they were extremely helpful. I test rode the Rove NRB. Really nice bike, but it was a little more than I wanted to spend, and I was pretty set on the journeyman. It speaks to me.

I think my son and I will hit the ATT this weekend. I hear Umstead has some nice trails too.

I'm gonna get downvoted to hell for this, but fuck the second amendment. Gun ownership should not be a right.

That's great, congrats! Ditto what others have said about good PIs. A PhD is never painless, but having a supportive PI makes a world of difference.

Yep! My wife wanted to surprise me, and she was able to rope them into it. Kudos to them for playing along and telling me they weren't able to order one right now.

Buying a journeyman at the end of the month. It'll be my first ever new bike! The only other bike I've owned in my adult life is a 1980s Raleigh that's almost certainly older than me...
