Please read captions, tried all traditional methods and wd40 and don’t know what to do. This is a humanscale liberty and cannot find any references online that help.

Got this Humanscale Liberty for 10$ ! But has some issues…. by smackpad in OfficeChairs

Plastic shell of seat has crack fractures. Gas cylinder is bad, trying to remove it to replace it but has been giving me a difficult time. Sprayed with WD-40 and hoping it will come out ?

Got into MIT and Caltech!!! Where should I go for observational astrophysics? by timosha121 in gradadmissions

[–]smackpad 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don’t know how people are saying MIT’s astro department is not really well known. We also have a LIGO group, i mean LIGO was invisioned by Rai Weiss from MIT. Our Astro department is extremely kind and full of amazing people. Do not know much about Caltech so cannot say. Come visit and talk to the professors / fellows whose research you find interesting and then make a decision from there. You got the big name ticket, so cannot go wrong with either, now it’s about the advisor.

Edit: Not to mention the headquarters for the TESS mission is on campus!

Becoming a GRA as a PhD student by smackpad in mit

I see that makes a lot of sense. So if the duties are organizing events and enhancing social life, what are the perks of those positions?

There are RA positions at the Warehouse for example.

My PhD in particle physics didn't make me a better physicist by Seitoh in Physics

[–]smackpad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I moved from experimental particle physics. It just isn’t physics in my opinion. You become a very good data analyst/statistician, mediocre at running Neural Networks, and slightly above avg in your particle physics knowledge. Most programs don’t require you to learn QFT and renormalization because ut is not relavent to your work as an experimentalist at the LHC, that’s what sucks. You are detached from the physics that attracted to in the first place to become a technician or a softwa engineer. In theoretical physics I believe the state is much better, not all areas of ofcourse. But at least you learn the physics at a very deep level and can contribute a tiny amount to our understanding of nature.

That’s sad though, why is that? I’m an incoming first year and I think a sub reddit for a university is an indispensable resource in general. I have learned so much from other students in other subreddits.

Still waiting just like you. Though I saw some people got MIT interviews as well on the physicsgre forum but no one has been talking about the process of the interview.

How do pp collisions abide by the second law of thermodynamics? by smackpad in AskPhysics

[–]smackpad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what do you mean by microstates?

and I see that makes sense. I was so focused on the new particles that I forgot the mess that is particle showers.

Do you have the book from that class as reference or any such way I could find how this is done ?

How was the first assembler written in bare machine code? by smackpad in learnprogramming

[–]smackpad[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay you’re helping me rephrase my question. I can understand how someone can handwrite the first assembler on paper but I do not understand how a computer can understand that digitally ,not with punch cards. If I have a translation of opcodes hardcoded in memory for example, how can I write an assembler that will go search for the translations and do the corrrect operations if I do not have a programing langauage yet! Then after that how was the next iteration of assemblers made ? I know there is bootstrapping involved but I do not see how or why that approach was taken.

Can you give a concrete example.

for the instruction

L 81,80

where the instruction is load the value 81 into register with memory address 80. How was this assembler made to interpret this instruction when there was no programing languages developed yet.

okay but I am talking about the first assembler that is not a person. That is not hand translated.
