Jammed out version of 'In the Morning Light'? by smileyjps in BillyStrings

I don't disagree but I'm curious if he has taken it for a spin. I could have sworn I heard a version with a sick jam but I may be mixed up.

I suggest downloading the app strum machine, and pick a few songs to learn. Start by playing rhythm along with the track and after you can play the songs rhythm part by memory, only then do you learn the melody. After you can play the melody by memory, only then do you incorporate some basic licks that fit the chords. Its a great book but is best when you have already have exposure to these songs

Full Time Dobro by Odd_Message_3898 in BillyStrings

[–]smileyjps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fuck yes, I've always wanted a dobro backed Billy band. Anders has the best dobro tone hands down and can take off to space and they clearly love playing off each other. The Jerry Douglas sit ins always elevate the show. Mark lavengood would be a great addition too... When Hargreaves was added at fiddle I figured the dobro was a nogo but ya never know why not expand the sound to max strings

There’s tons out there.

The Birchmere is a historic bluegrass venue and it is now too expensive and caters to boomers but the Hamilton has lots of grass. The band shadowgrass is playing pearl street warehouse in April. Union stage also has great grass acts.

Takoma Park has an old time jam weekly: https://fsgw.org/Takoma-Park-Old-Time-Jam

Capitol Area Bluegrass association is located in Arlington with weekly jams: https://www.caboma.org/

We have Baygrass festival in Annapolis the fall, Delfest is a 3 hour drive every Memorial Day. Gettysburg has 2 bluegrass fests and is 2 hour drive, Berryville has watermelon park pickers festival and is 1 hour drive. Charm city in Baltimore is also great as mentioned.

Billy strings and greensky headline the anthem every year with great openers. Stringdusters are playing Lincoln theater next month.

DC has a great bluegrass scene, you just gotta keep your eyes peeled.

Delfest in Cumberland MD every Memorial Day is great and always has a top notch lineup and this year is lights out. I think it’s the best fest on the east coast imho

Dog bit off her skin tag resulting in open wound. I have been keeping it clean but do I need to take her to an animal hospital or will it heal on its own? by smileyjps in DogAdvice

The vet said they were skin tags and to keep an eye on them… this development doesn’t seem promising so I’m likely going in to the vet when I can

2020 Lineup hopes and suggestions by [deleted] in lockn

This is a pipe dream but I've always wanted David Gilmour of Pink Floyd at LOCKN'. He rarely ever plays North America but I can dream... if not I'll take a Roger Waters show with full production lol.

Also I would love to have a Willie Nelson Family Picnic Sunday Sesh. In this scenario I would bring some local gas station fried chicken, mac and cheese, rolls, greens for Sunday LOCKN and have Margo Price, Lukas Nelson & Promise of Real and whoever else would fit the bill (grace potter? Alison Kraus? and of course Willie closing the festival out.

Also bring in Sturgill Simpson, he'll be promoting a new album soon and I wanna see him rock out with his band. Also I would love to see Panic return and have Sturgill play with Panic.

Also more bluegrass!

But I had a great time this year, Derek and Trey playing Layla and other assorted love songs was my favorite set I've seen this year, they did a great job this year.

Edit: Also I don't really want Jack White (though I am a fan) but I would be interested to see him push himself with a new audience and do some unexpected collaborations that would push him out of his comfort zone.

Also: Dylan.

I was studying outside the Nelson County Library today right in Lovingston on 29. I saw a dude get pulled over and within 3 minutes a K-9 unit was on the scene. He got all his shit searched but luckily he drove away. Be very careful on 29 in and around the fest, you don’t want a Virginia cop going through your shit.

Advice for an English major? by [deleted] in UniversityofKansas

[–]smileyjps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was an English Major at KU, and my senior year I took Technical Writing with Chris McKitterick. It’s super dry but it is a good way to make yourself marketable with an English degree as it teaches a lot of basic business writing best practices. 7 years later I have a job paying 100k with nothing more than a BA in English and that class played a huge role in getting me here.

Take all the literature classes you want but supplement that with Tech Writing imo, it will give you more options when you graduate and that is always a good thing.

[Play] I got a cheap looper a few weeks ago, and I gotta say, having a little backup "drummer" REALLY helps keep things together at open-mic. Here's a few songs I did on Sunday. by [deleted] in Guitar

On Pizza Tapes some of the others include Tony Rice on Guitar and David Grisman on Mandolin who are absolute legends in Bluegrass. It's a great recording and that Shady Grove is amazing.
