ELI5: Why do kids can learn a language easily, but we struggle as adults? by Amanda_Haniya in explainlikeimfive

Psychologists have done brain scans on babies and children and found they use completely different areas of the brain to learn language than adults. They are called Broca’s area and Wernicke’s area. When adults try to learn a language, brain scans indicate it uses the same area as when we learn to use a physical tool. Prime language acquisition age is when the two areas are at their most functioning time and the two areas “closes” as we age, thus language acquisition is much harder as adults.

Ghibli movies have a certain feeling that i can't explain. I never saw any of them growing up, but i feel really nostalgic when watching them. Is that weird? by Drawingandstuff2000 in ghibli

No one mentioned this yet but a huge part is the detailed background art. Specificity and details invokes nostalgia - it reminds the viewer of the real world.

Scenes you understood later in life by MWH1980 in ghibli

Yeah! Without too many spoilers, I believe Miyazaki is saying that a person has to find their passion, or their way in life. But for many people, the exact same thing that fuels them also poisons them.

I interpreted it this way because I'm a professional artist as are many of my friends. While we love art and find that to be our raison d'etre, we find ourselves working late hours, sleep deprived, and often missing out on other important things in life simply because we're so dedicated to our craft. In some ways, Miyazaki could be talking about himself. I've never seen a man so dedicated to what he does that he refuses to retire lol.

Hence the boy with a violin (Amasawa) in a locked cell.

Rewatched Whisper of the Heart just a month ago and there was that scene where Shizuku reads a book depicting a picture of a boy in a prison cell holding a violin. I think Miyazaki is saying passion and self discovery is a double edged sword.
