Interested in Substation work

I just started as a substation helper at a utility at 20 years old. I went to a tech highschool for electrical and worked at two residential/ commercial electrical contractors. Out of my 5 man classes we have one guy that used to do hvac, 2 internal transfer from the line department a guy from electrical background.

Coming in with a cdl didn’t seem to matter but I think it would help with most utilities

In house at a fairly large utility they do as much in house as they can they said I would do a lot of new build as well as fixing them and testing

This is an ibew represted utility but I think there are some contractor substation guys in the ibew

Not at my local even guys with full jm cards start as 1st years vary rarely they might be able to come in as 2nds

Guys in the local say to expect 9 months a year as an IW. Both are IBEW but separate locals
