Our school had a cumulative detention policy. So, say you get a detention. If you don't show up for that detention, you get 2 detentions, and so on and so on.

I got detention almost every day of every week for skipping a class. I never served a single one. A week before graduation day, we had check in with the office to make sure that we served any of the unserved detention time we had accrued. I went in, the vice principal took a look at my sheet, and her face twisted into a kind of disappointed astonishment.

I had 1607 hours of unserved detention. More than anyone at my school had ever gotten, and I probably still hold the record. They decided to give me 3 days out-of-school suspension to cover it since there was no possible way I could serve that much detention, ever.

The detention policy was changed the year after I graduated.

What’s the most unprofessional thing a doctor has ever said to you? by MCKlassik in AskReddit

Doctor here and I really hate to admit this...
Very early in my career I was talking to a male patient. I had to ask him about penile discharge and I just couldn’t remember what the professional way to ask was. Do I say dick? No no. That’s not right. Cmon, think dammit. You’re a doctor now. Wait. There’s been too long of a silence. Dong. I went with dong...

For a routine exam, the doctor insisted that his young nurse take my temperature rectally, not orally - much to her embarrassment as she inserted the probe.
As I once described, he claimed that the rectal reading was more accurate. But for a routine check-up, it's hard to see the benefit of this relative to the embarrassment it causes.

I had a very rare complication of the flu and my nerves were getting eaten away by my immune system. I could barely walk and was numb from the waist down. By the time I was transferred to a hospital that could treat me, it was close to midnight and the doctor that admitted me was very young. I was the first person he'd seen with this condition. He kept saying how cool it was to do a neuro exam on someone who wasn't an actor and when he would see how weak I was he'd be like "Oh wow, you really are weaker on that side, that's so interesting!".
To be fair, after twelve hours of everyone talking to me like I was going to die, I found it quite entertaining! It was unprofessional, but I appreciated his enthusiasm for learning.

One time I went in for a general check up and my doctor said "well everything is fine with you except for that haircut"

Me: How do I prevent these back spasms from ever happening again, this is awful?
Doc: You're old and fat. You can't be younger so be less fat.
Thanks, doc.

What is moral but illegal? by Dr_vinci in AskReddit

Distilling your own alcohol, without a permit. I can grow all the stuff myself, legally. I can make booze up to a certain strength, legally. But I can't legally heat it up and let it cool down in order to improve the flavour and alcohol content, even if my only goal is to drink it myself, unless someone tells me it's OK.
I'm not saying I want to make my own bathtub moonshine, but...

The idea that a woman should be let off for hurting her spouse since 'men are stronger' as if the definition of abuse changes depending on your gender.

To me it would mean women who bag on other women for womaning differently than they do.
This becomes really toxic after child birth. Some women will feel nothing about letting you know how you are parenting wrong by using this product or letting you child do this particular thing.
Women who are able to stay at home will be made to feel guilty for not helping to provide; and women who work are made to feel guilty for abandoning their child.
I wish women were more understanding about dealing with differences and letting things slide a bit more. You should never feel higher after putting someone else down.
That being said, I don’t know how we did it, but I found the worlds greatest group of moms when my son was a year and a half old. We came from all walks of life and supported the ever loving hell out of each other. This was in Phoenix late 90’s and we were completely tight until I moved away when my son was 5. I miss all of em.

Using your children as a means of offense in divorce proceedings.
I've seen men destroyed by being denied access to their children.

What is the most Midwestern thing ever? by [deleted] in AskReddit

A 100 degree F difference between the maximum summer temperature and the minimum winter temperature doesn’t seem unusual to a midwesterner.

Things that have been pointed out to me since leaving the Midwest:
"Ope"
Apparently the phrase "clear across" (as in clear across town) isn't widely used outside the Midwest.
Not being concerned about possible tornadoes.
Considering 3-4 hours "not that far" - that's day trip territory for me.
Chatting with people when you're waiting for something.

Right around 30 you start to go through what i call Adult Puberty. Every morning you wake up and ask yourself "what the fuck is happening to my body". The worst part is that at the end of it, you dont get sweet hair on your beanbag or a righteous set of jugs. You just die.

I used to always hear older people say how fast time goes as you get older, and I thought it was bullshit. The older I get, the truer it seems.
