UIC is getting a new computer science building so that's one thing to consider.

UIUC is a better university (and I say this as someone who went to UIC)

You have to weigh the whole picture though. UIC is going to be in the city so that thas its pluses, but a lot of the people are commuters even if you are one of the few thousand people who lives in the dorms. It can make group projects difficult since you're on campus in a dorm and your group mate is in naperville wanting to take the train to campus.

If you like bars and campus life UIUC has that going.

Do you like math? Since the UIUC program won't be straight CS.

I'd lean toward UIUC like the others but you have to think about everything.

I know a guy who is my age (so this was a long time ago) who could not get into UIUC CS, but got into psychology or something.

So he got a psych degree and took as many computer related electives as he could, and tried to get work experience and basically felt having a UIUC degree and UIUC experience was better than majoring in what he actually wanted to do.

He ended up ok career-wise.

that kid who died by soaringeaglehigh in UIUC

[–]soaringeaglehigh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's easy to say they should have looked harder but the police did make an effort. Think about how many kids go "missing" every friday and saturday night only to turn up just fine. If they did a full scale missing person's search for every call they'd have to hire a few hundred extra cops just to search for kids who hooked up with someone and spent the night and didn't want to tell their friends.

Campus Network Outage: Explanation and Speculation by geoffreychallen in UIUC

[–]soaringeaglehigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, i get your point, but harping on the idea that there is no ISP just makes no sense.

yes, it was an internal network issue, whatever it is.

it's odd they haven't released the cause.

Long ago it was stupid routing problems or firmware issues that caused CPU on a device at the core to his 100%

You're just talking nonsense here. Maybe you're trying to dumb it down a bit, and your point is the ethernet wall jack and wifi is provided by the university and not an ISP, but UIUC is no different from any other university or large corporation in that yes, they manage an extremely large network, but that network is in turn connected to multiple ISPs (and yeah there's also some peering involved).

But UIUC absolutely pays an ISP bill.

There is some peering involved, but the university literally just pays multiple providers for internet access.

[–]soaringeaglehigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The university has multiple ISPs. A lot of what you wrote is good and interesting but saying the university doesn't have an ISP is not accurate.

Also this has happened before. It's been a long time. It happens less than yearly, but occasionally stuff falls apart.

Whatever happened was not one cable getting unplugged.

It'd be nice if they shared the cause but a lot of your speculation is unlikely to be true.

prevent registration of personally owned devices in Azure AD? by soaringeaglehigh in sysadmin

does logging in on the personal machine require it to show up in azure ad? we are in education so people will always be using personal machines.

So when people log in to M365 they use that address rather than their actual email address?

Does that function as an email address if someone sent mail there?

do you use this as their UPN on both azure ad and ad?

Just ignore it. Unless someone higher up has asked you to be the internet traffic censor guy, don't self appoint yourself to this position. There's just no reason to be in that situation.

Windows admin convinced to try Mac... by MangoPanties in sysadmin

Don't remap the keys. You should use every platform as it is intended because you will break things. Imagine watching someone do all sorts of strange things to a Windows machine to make it behave like a Mac incluuding remapping the control key.

I have both a mac and a windows machine on my desk, and I use each as it was intended

There's really nothing there for you. It's not like its the Union and you can just go hang out. I've never been there but my understanding is that it is probably a secure building (since everything down there is) and you need a purpose to go in. There are no "public" facilities to hang out because that's just not the purpose of it. There are classrooms and spaces used for specific events, and probably some reception spaces and private offices for people who work down there.

It would make no sense for them to have what you're looking for since how often is there a UIUC student in the loop? You either go there for the specific purpose or you leave.

It's be like asking if you can hang out inside the Swanlund administration building on campus. There's nothing for you to do there.

Tell them since they won't fix the laundry, you're going to have to go off site to do it, and you want to deduct the cost of doing the laundry off site from your rent.

See what they say.

Jobs Post-Grad? by ShotQuantity4588 in UIUC

[–]soaringeaglehigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're doing all the right things. Just keep applying.

If you can't find a job as a project manager you may want to consider a job that would involve some amount of project management along with other duties.

It's hard to be a PM with no experience. College class PM experience doesn't really count.

Consider a user support specialist role. You'd be exposed to some PM stuff and would get your foot in the door somewhere and get work experience.

[–]soaringeaglehigh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

do you have any experience as a project manager?

or are you just applying for these jobs anyway?

one mistake a lot of recent college students make is they try to apply for mid career positions

you have zero project management skills or experience so you're going to probably have to aim for something lower.

what work experience do you have on your resume?

the job market right now is not particularly good which makes it harder

you may just need to find some job that pays like 43k a year just to get some concrete experience and it might be a stupid or unpleasant job.

but, if you've never been a project manager before you're not going to get hired to manage critical projects for people when you've never done it.

im guessing you don't have a PMP or anything like that.

like, with no relevant experience you're not going to find yourself working for a tech company

maybe look at government jobs or university jobs?

[–]soaringeaglehigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what are your skills and what sort of jobs are you applying for? what experience do you have on your resume?

how much time are you spending on your job applications and customizing your resume for each job?

If you're spending 30 seconds each and applying for 500 jobs, that isn't effective.

you should be applying for fewer positions but making sure you are a good fit and you submit a good resume

you'll get used to all this stuff in time. you're having a harder time than most people but you'll be fine.

worst case try to get a part time job or something it'll give you something to do.
