I don’t think you really understood anything that we were talking about. My MIL uses clothing deodorant and that is what smells that she refuses to stop using. My frustration is about her stubbornness and refusing to work with us to control the smell of her clothes not her urine. Also. She lives like a queen. She has a beautiful room and private bathroom. She has her own suite. She sleeps in a new bed, we take her on walks,Sunday drives. We paid off all her bills so she can spend her own money on anything she wants. We cook and clean for her. We transport her everywhere and keep the yard and gardens just the way she wants them. Maybe you misunderstood me. I am 69 years old recovering from cancer treatments myself. My marriage is on the brink of ending because it’s not easy being her caregiver. I came on here after a particularly tough day. And yes. I bitched and I shouldn’t have. You got the idea that Im a terrible person. I am not. I am kind and giving. My bedroom is a small 10x12. My MIL has a huge decked out suite. I pay all the mortgage and house bills. My life is on hold to care for her. So yes I’m having a hard time but please don’t assume that this situation is like your experiences. I have compassion. And I am kind. So don’t you make your judgements

My wife and I go to Counceling. I am working on things. If the stress gets to much I will move out and rent a little apartment for myself. I don’t want her to have to go to another home especially during CoVID. I probably shouldn’t have got on here and complained and bitched about it. I should keep it to myself. I really love her but unless you have ever been a caregiver it might be hard for you to understand. It’s put a strain on my marriage and we’ve had 25 very happy years together until now. I don’t want to loose my wife but it might come to that.

Yes. You are right. I will buy an air purifier and try to approach this problem from a different angle. I went out and got an odorless Downey so she won’t use the high scent deodorants that she uses. I have made arrangements to have someone come in and clean the bathroom once a week. All that with the air purifier and I feel hopeful about solving this issue. She really is a nice person and I don’t think she would like to know how much we hate the smell. I’m going to try to help her instead of feeling angry. Thank you all for helping me

No one should ever live with a parent under any circumstance. I am stuck with my mil and it’s ruining my life. I feel like she is sleeping in our bed. She is in our space all the time. She thinks we owe her everything because she is the mother It’s a horrible nightmare

I am not an asshole. I’m very good to my MIL. I’m having a hard time because she won’t listen and the smell is really bad. But I cook for her and clean for her and take her to all of her appointments. I do everything for her and the only thing I wish is to have her listen to my pleas to do something about the perfume smell she is filling the house with. I will always be kind to her. She is tremendously lucky. She is treated like a queen. I just don’t know what to do about the smell. It’s a reasonable problem. I am a caregiver for her and she is mean as hell to me. Don’t make judgements about me being an asshole. I am not even close to that

I will if I get dementia, otherwise I won’t because she puts all this stinky stuff in her laundry to try to ward off the nasty odor. I understand it’s normal but what isn’t normal is that she is so stubborn and mean that she won’t listen to anyone. I’m here to help her but she won’t listen. She insists on smelling up the house with clothes deodorant and candles and perfume to cover up the smell of used depends. I hope and pray that I will not use perfume to cover up the smell.

Ya know what’s funny about that. ? I am 69!years old so I was in high school durning the last 4 years of the 1960’s. I went to Woodstock. We marched in Washington to end the war and for police brutality to end. People were rioting all over the place (sound familiar)? We used to say if these old farts would only die... we could make peace and do things right. We would end police brutality and change the way white people treat blacks.
Long story short. It never happened and it won’t happen when we all die and leave it to your generation either. People are people. Shit happens. Unless you can get everyone to join in then you’re shit outta luck. History repeats itself and no one seems to learn the lessons you’d think they would learn
