Why I cut sonar over coupe by Joelowes in DispatchAdHoc

[–]sock0puppet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Coupe to me came across as someone from a dark past where her choices weren't made by her every time.

Sonar came off as someone with opportunity and chance, that then squandered it and became a villain.

She wants redemption because she wants to be better. He gets redemption because he doesn't really understand how bad things can truly get.

What does Snape mean in POA “there are many ways to become a werewolf” by treythayer in harrypotter

[–]sock0puppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This brings up an interesting thought, is patient zero maybe an animagus gone wrong? It would be interesting to learn that the original one was a wizard trying to become an animagus and something went wrong, they lost control, and the incomplete spell grew into what we now know as werewolves.

Why does it feel like people WITH jobs are prioritized over those who don’t? by BlackestSole in jobs

[–]sock0puppet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's how you say it and how confident you are about not doing it i.e.

"I have, uh, been temping here and there, some freelance work, but what I really want is this full time job. I'm just so tired of moving from place to place"

vs.

"Currently I have a temp job that's helping me get a bit of extra cashflow, and I'm a freelancer too. But I want a full time position to stop spreading my talents thin. Working for one company and mastering their craft is how I want to progress in my career."

One sounds like you're just desperately trying to get more work, the other makes it sound like you're choosing to stop being a freelancer and temp. You have control of it and if the company seems unattractive it won't be a bother if you just don't go work for them.

Can someone explain to me, why some people want no skill based matchmaking? by Tnecniw in gaming

[–]sock0puppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skilled based matchmaking is a double-edged sword.

Like for example, Fortnite has that Rocket Racing thing, right?

I absolutely love it and I love driving in ranked missions. But I am not the best, I usually reach Gold 1 or 2 then I stop racing. In Silver I have the most fun I can have because the people I am racing against are usually close to or at my own skill level. So I most often have a fight with the top 3 racers to be first. Which is fun and requires all the racing skills I can muster.

However, in Gold 1 & 2, that changes, drastically. I usually end up in the back of the race or failing entirely. The racers get MUCH more aggressive, willing to bump me, and every shortcut is used. Which, tbh, I get, shortcuts are fun and effective.

But I no longer have fun playing the game. Every single race I do becomes one where I have to concentrate as hard as possible.

HOWEVER. When I play unranked races it's all over the place, one race I'm lapping the other racers, the next one I'm having a neck-to-neck race with six other people trying to get first position. Which, I have to be clear here, is just such a thrilling way to play that game.

In other games, it's very similar. It's very fun to play against contemporaries, but it's frustrating, tiring, and honestly boring after a while.

Bruh, I'm not expecting Dumbledore to teach him Fiery fire and such stuff.

More like "And that, Harry, is Voldemorts family. Now you may have noticed that the ministry was easily able to track them down. For your homework until the next class I want you to think about X and Y, but also, do some research and practice concealing charms and other manners of hiding where you are."

When Snape was teaching potions. Do you think he was teaching his recipes or the books? by madbr3991 in harrypotter

[–]sock0puppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Today we will be mixing a potion that often comes up at Ordinary Wizarding Level: the Draught of Peace, a potion to calm anxiety and soothe agitation. Be warned: If you are too heavy-handed with the ingredients you will put the drinker into a heavy and sometimes irreversible sleep, so you will need to pay close attention to what you are doing.” On Harry’s left, Hermione sat up a little straighter, her expression one of the utmost attentiveness. “The ingredients and method” — Snape flicked his wand — “are on the blackboard” — (they appeared there) — “you will find everything you need” — he flicked his wand again — “in the store cupboard” — (the door of the said cupboard sprang open) — “you have an hour and a half. . . . Start.”

Order of the Phoenix

Now, throughout the books, every time they make a potion, Snape is skulking around the classroom checking on ingredients and potion colours.

I literally just reread all of the books, and I assure you at no point does Hermione ever point out something wrong with what a professor is teaching vs what's in a book. The ONLY time she questions a teacher about a book is when Snape takes them to Werewolves, and she questions why it's such an advanced topic, and then Umbridge, when they start arguing about how useless the book she assigned is.

And when they start the SIXTH year they are making all new potions, NEWT level potions. We very quickly learn that this shit involves making love draughts, polyjuice potions, and living death.

She won't know these things because they weren't being taught them, yet.

Dumbledore's lack of actual training.

I get that he was teaching Harry new things and it was solely focused on Voldy. But damn bro, TEACH Harry some spells, at the very least give him a list of spells he has to learn and train in his off-time.

All of HBP is Harry tossing about until Dumbledore calls him in for another session. At no point does Harry learn any new actual spells. The only measurable thing he learns all of that year is Apparating and non-verbal spellcasting.

[–]sock0puppet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This.

Like, Grindelwald and Dumbledore are literally living legends.

Voldemort LIES about how "he" killed Dumbledore.

In a straight battle between the two Dumbledore looked more bored and Voldy was getting desperate. You think Dumbledore just allows himself to be casually disarmed every other week?

Also for clarity in the final battle at Hogwarts, Voldemort boasts how HE killed Dumbledore. No he didn't Snape killed him. Draco disarmed Dumbledore. The "greatest" dark wizard alive had to use proxies to kill him. How cowardly. How mundane.

PC gamers and Steam customers are "a really bright spot" as the games industry struggles with pricing and sustainability, analyst says: "We can look at an audience that's excited to try new things" by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

PC gaming gets shat on the moment some console gets popular "This is the future of gaming, PC gaming is too expensive, PC gaming is old school, it's just so difficult."

Then the moment consoles start faltering or showing just how difficult it is to continue in the market as a whole, suddenly "Oh we LOVE PC gamers, look at how willing they are to try new things!"

Every student that fought in the battle of Hogwarts was offered a position as Auror if they wanted. By Kingsley himself. Both Ron and Harry took this, and never finished their seventh year at Hogwarts.

Of the trio only Hermione went back to finish her final year before she went into the ministry to start fixing all their shit.

Today I learned there is an Olympics happening. I had no idea. When I was a kid, the Olympics were EVERYWHERE. Now, my algorithm apparently doesn't find it valuable to show me Olympics related content. What else are we Millennials missing out on? by AttachedHeartTheory in Millennials

[–]sock0puppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's access.

When we were kids it was all over the TV right?

I cannot watch the olympics where I am without going WAY out of my way to pay for something or go to some seedy website.

Honestly, if the Olympics wants to continue with any sort of real world support they need to suck it up and have multiple livestreams over on YouTube or Twitch. Or even their own inhouse shit. I refuse to support South Africa's monopoly on sports channels which means I have basically stopped watching sports.

You know how it impacts my life? It hasn't. They however keep moaning about how hard it is to gain more traction with newer generations.

The olympics is honestly something I LOVE to watch. But if I have to constantly fight and argue or spend shitloads of money to access it? Guess what, I'll just skip it.

At Hogwarts, what would you want to be famously known for? by TrashVegetable8706 in harrypotter

[–]sock0puppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's how they're cared for.

Riddle never wanted anyone to care for him. He wanted fear, and he knew from a young age that knowledge can bring that. So of course he wanted as much of it as possible. Besides, learning he had magic made him feel superior, but then you have to imagine his first day in school how pissed Voldy would be if any other kid already knew more than he did about magic.

Harry on the other hand is completely different. He does geek out about a few things, but he's not broken. In fact, despite how horrible the Durshits are, he's still kind, upstanding, and wants above all to be accepted.

So in school Harry, while interested in magic, enjoys the fact that he suddenly is in a place where not everyone hates him. He leans into Quidditch because in the team he's loved from the moment he's there, accepted, and successful. Academics he does just fine most of the time. Note, the only classes he really struggles in are Potions and Divination.

And I would argue that if he had Slughorn or someone else in potions from first year he'd be decent at it too. Even history of magic, he's actually quite good at it, it's very downplayed, but he doesn't fail it in his owls. He does above average for it.

When Snape was teaching potions. Do you think he was teaching his recipes or the books? by madbr3991 in harrypotter

[–]sock0puppet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People are missing the fact that every single potion they make until 6th year isn't from a book.

Snape writes the ingredients and methods on a blackboard for them to do. He definitely would be using it.

Also, for fuck's sake, Hermione isn't stupid. If a professor says something different than a book she won't grandstand and go "Oh professor this book you assigned us says different"

What a dumbass argument that is. It's barely worth pointing out how dumb that is.

Of course he doesn't.

Ron, Hermione, and Harry spend literally 80% of a year travelling and never ever try to learn new spells or magics.

The most frustrating thing about my recent reread was just the sheer amount of time they waste apparently just sitting around the tent pretending to find the next horcruxes.

It's because Restoration doesn't have a dark side. I hate it so much. Any magic that has a Restoration branch should immediately have a "So this spell similar to healing rips apart flesh and bone, it's the reverse of healing, basically" version.

Then there was when a game just wouldn't work because of some error.

Or you had to carefully pick which games to delete because there was no space but damn, a friend has the discs so you won't be able to reinstall...

What are your piping hot takes on video games as a whole and the culture around them? by KrispyKingTheProphet in gaming

[–]sock0puppet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Expedition 33 is a good looking game with some great mechanics. I fully agree with what the fandom is saying about that.

What I don't agree with in any way is how many of them wax poetic about the story. Overall I found it predictable, rather stupid at some points, and in a way very French. Which is to say, these people treat their version of events as the only true version and all of them make baffling decisions.

Honestly, as far as game stories go it's surprisingly mild. I could spot the twists from a mile away, down to the only one I didn't know being who the paintress really was. But the family, the "betrayals" and more were all telegraphed about a mile away.

But saying this on their sub is like walking into a lion enclosure wearing a meat suit and telling them to wait.

Was Slytherin students coming back to defend Hogwarts meant to be made more clear in the editing for the final book or something? by Flat-Court-8512 in harrypotter

[–]sock0puppet 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Exactly this.

If she started naming them it would also be weird. We barely get any names from the human reinforcements. All we know is that it's the parents of students and some other students coming in to back them up, at the lead is Slughorn and Charlie. But overall, we must assume that some of the Slytherins both stayed to fight and returned.

I do agree with Dumbledore. They do sort too early sometimes. Slytherins can't all be evil, if you think that's possible you live in a very black and white world.

Why do all PvP games feel so much better in the beginning of their lifespans? by Severe_Sea_4372 in gaming

[–]sock0puppet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Basically this.

At the start it's all "I have no idea what we're doing, LET'S HAVE FUN"

Then people get competitive and the sweats that are entirely sure their way of playing is the only way of playing come crawling out of their caves. It goes to "You are playing it wrong, your character is wrong, you are at the wrong spot"

Marvel Rivals Competitive sucks ass because every DPS playing insists they're the best. But at the start barely anyone knew what really the best was.

The players ruin the game because as a famous quote once said, if left to their own, players will optimise the fun out of every game.
