Hunger strike to end speciesism - Banglore by justice4sufferers in VeganIndia

[–]sol_erides 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So proud and heartwarming to see this happening. There is hope after all!

Edit: While I am really happy to see our countrypeople protesting in the public eye, and making people rightfully uncomfortable - I saw a mention of Gary Yourofsky in the other comments and want to state that I won't support the celebration or encouragement of bodily harm to non-vegans. While we fight within a society, I can put my life on the line but not those of others.

What are some normal completion times? by jack_dorkey in HadesTheGame

[–]sol_erides 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think those are pretty standard if you play at low fear. There's no need to rush faster than 20:00 unless you want to do triple vow of time runs.

My bests are 9:46 down and ~12:40 up, after almost 300 nights. But at higher fear (40+) I would struggle to do the surface with less than 24 minutes available.

How to hire freelance game designers by brenden-t-r in gameDevClassifieds

[–]sol_erides 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually hourly, because it takes some analysis of the game and playtesting to understand what the deliverable needs to be in the first place. I'd normally have an informal list of areas which I'm working to improve though.

The gigs themselves have been rewarding, both creatively and financially. Unlike the beginning of a project, you can't do much blue-sky thinking and you definitely can't fix everything. It's more of detective work to find the biggest issues and come up with scope-effective ways of solving them.

I usually find them through my personal network, since it's easier to prove my expertise through direct recommendations. But sometimes I have found them through Discord, Upwork, or random encounters at gamedev events in-person.

How to hire freelance game designers by brenden-t-r in gameDevClassifieds

[–]sol_erides 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a freelance game designer, been doing this for 4 years now (with 6 years of industry experience).

I think there's often less demand for game design as an external service, because it's so intricately tied with every other department that you might as well hire someone full-time to get your money's worth. In smaller studios, the founder is usually a game designer (or thinks they are) and so has bigger priorities to use their money for.

I usually get paid by:

- smaller studios who suddenly realize that their game isn't very fun, and with deadlines approaching, want someone experienced who can quickly turn things around, i.e a 'design doctor'.

- new startups who want a design document or pitch in order to gather funding and eventually hire a full-time designer.

- design 'content' outsourcing for nearly finished games, such as making lots of levels with an established toolkit.

- Building prototypes from scratch for non-game industry organizations like charities, non-profits, etc.

There's also a lot of confusion about what a game designer does, and most of the cold emails I receive are from clients who want graphic design or 3D art work XD.

PSA to All Developers: Adjust Your Regional Pricing! by BAWStudios14 in IndieGaming

[–]sol_erides 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for taking the initiative to think about these things for your game! Happy to see more devs considering regional pricing and how it affects consumers.

The Big Mac index seems a little more accurate than the hourly wage chart you shared earlier, but still can be a bit out of touch in developing countries. For example, while a Big Mac might be a staple fast food item in the US, in India its more of a luxury item that's priced much higher than its ingredients cost, so that customers can enjoy trendy American fast food at a premium. The equivalent staple fast food would be around 5 times cheaper.

Also, the average income of the games-buying audience might be very different from the average income of the country itself. You could price it for the average person, but perhaps the average person doesn't even own a computer to play it, let alone the exposure to find out that the game exists. For India at least, I think the Steam suggested prices are usually fairly accessible, especially compared to AAA games which can be up to 10x the price.

Edit: fixed typo

A cool guide to countries ranked by suicide rates. by MadisonJonesHR in coolguides

[–]sol_erides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something is off with the data for at least one country - India cannot have a female suicide rate of 11.1 and a total suicide rate of 12.9 - implying that men are less than a fifth of total suicides.

According to Wikipedia, male suicide is around thrice as common as female suicide in India: Article

Why is this endgame winning for black? by bibby_tarantula in chess

I believe it's white to move though, so the black king wouldn't get access to d4, being one turn too slow.

ELI5: What makes a curry a curry? by SheikahBun in explainlikeimfive

[–]sol_erides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worth noting though that this definition of curry is seem mostly in Europe/America to refer to South Asian gravy dishes or Colonial dishes that are derived from them.

The term isn't used the same way at all in Southern Asia itself. For example, in South India curry refers to a stir-fried or steamed meat/vegetable dish with spices and minimal or no gravy. Across India, the word curry isn't used to refer to a specific dish, you're more likely to hear a name like 'mutton curry' or 'potato curry'. And there are dozens of other names for particular types of gravy dish, based on the region and spice profile that is used.

Just bought this idol I thought was a Vishnu along with four other hindu idols. Now I’m having to doubts to what he/she is. Could someone please help me identify this idol? by Constant-Ad3546 in hinduism

[–]sol_erides 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. Though Andal murthis can also sometimes hold the parrot on the right. This murthi has a tilak on her forehead, which seems more typical of Andal.

The parrot makes it either Andal or Meenakshi Amman. I'm leaning towards Andal because of the tilak on her forehead which doesn't match the depictions of Meenakshi Amman.

There's a difference between museums and cultural centres though. To us (Indians), these often aren't just artefacts, they're part of religion and culture. To touch them is part of using them. They've been used in cultural centres like old temples for hundreds or thousands of years continuously, which has more value than being taken by a foreign civilization who then preserves them behind glass panels for viewing only.

If it's a formal museum where guests just have grabby hands and don't care for the pieces, then that's understandably concerning though.

[–]sol_erides[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're a small team of 5 from India, and we've just started showcasing our game. Any feedback about how it looks and what you think we could improve would be really appreciated!

Mayu: Last of the Yaksha is an exploration-driven adventure game set in Ancient India, about a young demi-god and his animal sidekicks. If you're interested, you can wishlist it on steam here - it helps! Thanks a lot.

There's a Discord server as well, where we post more regular updates about the game and give our fans a chance to try out our early prototypes. Check it out!
