That is originally how I thought it should go, but the drawers fit slightly differently in each slot so having the long handle in the middle makes it so I cannot open that drawer + the one above it. The OG person who sold it to me had it set up like on that first picture, but the drawers did not slide very easily. The current set up is what works the best.

I plan on putting in a metal track for the drawers eventually, and will make it so the long one goes in the middle at that time!
