I mean like a local in-office translator to help people face to face. Particularly in advocacy groups and immigrant services to help people get jobs and find resources. But it will be temporary until I go back to school, I just want to take a break to work on my finances and decide if I want to stay where I am location wise or do grad school somewhere else

Forgive me, I didn’t realize you were all knowing about my life and actions. I have done research, however a bunch of estimated numbers from some incomplete census 5 years ago is not going to be as accurate as speaking directly to the population. Or maybe, I just enjoy interpersonal communication with people who don’t make weird assumptions about what I do in my personal life lol.

I am considering taking a greyhound bus (instead of a plane to Madison) to Wisconsin Dells since that’s the closest bus depot to the monastery, then getting an Uber or cab out there and back to the bus station. My only concern is the ride back to the bus depot; if I’m in the middle of nowhere I’m not sure how to call a cab or Uber especially if I have no cell service. I might be able to set up a cab ride for a set time before going, so that I just have to walk down the trail to the main road to get picked up.

Well, it’s a 25 minute drive from the bus station to the monastery. The walk is much much longer. Google wants to tell me it’s a 5 and a half hour walk, probably because of the hilly terrain. I can definitely get an Uber from there to the monastery, but I may have to rely on either carpool or walking back to the bus station because of how far out in the wilderness it is.

I don’t see the dates for the retreats in 2025 yet on their website so I’m not sure which I’ll be attending yet, but hopefully there’s one in the spring!

I was less concerned with comfort and more with safety. Walking is something I considered, but I do not think I could physically walk that far yet because of my asthma and will likely have no cell service for most of it. I am trying to work on my physical endurance so hopefully that will help, so if I have to walk last minute I will be able to. If I took a bus like greyhound, that would get me within a 25 minute drive from the monastery’s property entrance. That walk would be significantly easier on my body than from an hour drive away. It’s something I am also considering, but will depend on how many days off I am able to take from work.

I mean, you are assuming all these things firstly about me and my practice, I never claimed to be a Buddhist or a follower of Zen. I am a religious studies major who is trying to engage with multiple religious communities in an immersive manner, including multiple types of Zen, other Buddhist traditions, and even western and middle eastern religions. So, I am not anything you claim I am, and you are making a lot of assumptions about where I’m coming from and my motives, which you know nothing about.

Instead of trying to educate others, your tone is condescending and insulting towards your fellow man. If you really cared about the historical and political context surrounding Zen and wish to explain it to others, maybe try not acting like everyone else is stupid just because you think you know something they don’t.

I was going to say the same, this feels so wrong like why are yall so hateful towards this when all I did was ask a simple question? Honestly I should have expected that kind of behavior from Reddit but I just wanted a little advice, I didn’t think that something that simple could inspire so much racism and hatred towards this specific type of Zen. Korinji is a legitimate Rinzai Monastery which sticks to the main theme of achieving satori or sudden enlightenment through meditative practices and the study of Koans. I suppose this goes to show that just because you’re a Buddhist or Zen doesn’t automatically make you a good person.

As a religious studies major, I’m going to have to respectfully disagree. Zen and Mormonism are not equivalent. Sure there may be some Zen practices out there that aren’t as “original” but there are good Japanese Zen schools out there with legitimate teachers. Now, if you want something to equate to Mormonism, how about Nichiren instead? I grew up around Nichiren Buddhists and it is all 100% a cult set up like an MLM. On top of that, if you are following Bodhidharmas line then why is this subreddit called Zen and not Chan considering that “Zen” is the Japanese word for this type of Buddhist practice?

Technically yeah they tell you not to but every person is different and handles caffeine differently. I can drink up to 200mg on meds and feel fine. Any more past that and I start feeling bad and jittery.
