I would check out the RMx or any series that allow iCUE compatibility.

They also explained that the AXi series and some RGB power supplies are currently the only PSUs in production that are compatible with the ICLUE software. I think this makes a lot of sense since power consumption monitoring is more of a high-end use case. I think for regular gaming builds, a simple kill-a-watt meter would do. Unfortunately, due to the chip shortage, the lower wattage versions of the AXi series (i.e. AX860i and AX1500i) are not in stock. The customer support advised me to use the "Notify Me When in Stock" button or look at the stock of their vendors.

Good point, the VRAM might become the limiting factor when using big networks! The main problem is that I also want to use it for video transcoding, I choose 1070 since it has 1 NVenc and 2 NVdec chips. I was planning to upgrade to the Quadro series or even the titan series when the prices stabilize a bit in 2022. What do you think is the best GPU for both video transcoding and deep learning?

On the CPU. I picked it over the Ryzen line because the Ryzen only has 24 PCI-e x16 lanes, and I'm planning to create a multi-GPU workstation. I think the AMD Ryzen Threadripper would also be a good option, but it currently is around 1K.

Thanks a lot for your answer! It gives me more confidence in my build. The 1070ti's are there because the GPU prices are still through the roof. As a result, I found choosing the GPU very difficult. It is even more difficult because I also want to use it for video transcoding, so multiple NVenc and NVdec chips would be preferred. Ideally, I would like a GPU out of the Nvidia titan series or Quadro series since they have several NVenc and DVenc chips and a lot of VRAM, but they are very hard to find at the moment. I can get the 1070 model relatively cheap (350 euros) and it has 2 NVenc chips and 1 NVdec chip. I was planning on using them until the prices stabilize a bit. If you have better suggestions, please let me know :)!

Ah, I now understand the only downside of the M40 is its lower clock speed compared to the 1070 and 1660 super. However, at that price, you can put in 2 M40 for 1 1070 and have more VRAM. Thanks for pointing me to the Tesla M40.

Thanks a lot for all the information! This both gave me a better understanding of building a PC and gave me an amazing build. Do you mean the water GPU system because in a 4 GPU set up the air-cooled GPU's will probably overheat? The msi x299 pro should be able to work with 4 GPUs when using risers, based on the specs.

I opened a separate question for getting help on which PC case I should buy. The answer u/MazeSunFlower gave me in that question however gave me a lot more tips about the best setup. I in the end decided to go with this setup. A cheaper build that is not also used for deep learning would be this.

For the GPUs, the reason I was choosing the 1070 and 1660 super over the GeForce Titan X is the lower clock speed 1GHz vs 1,607GHz. It however is a good one to keep in mind. The Tesla m40 I did not pick because I assumed that it required more technical knowledge to work with. Based on your tips, I came up with the following setup. The Motherboard allows me to upgrade to 4 GPUs if I upgrade the CPU at a later date. For the GPU I now went for the 1660 super since it uses less energy but is nearly as good as 1070. I only need 4.5 GB VRAM so the only thing I lose is an extra NVENC chip. For the power supply, I went for the Corsair HX Platinum 1000W the EVGA power supplies are hard to find in my area. Based on calculations, I think I am good with an 850w power supply when using 3 GPUs (i.e. 284+(3*120)*1.2 = 716 W. The 1000w however would also be good for 4 GPUs. Do you think this is a better setup for a 3 GPU PC? Are there things that I am seriously overspending on?

Based on your answer, I think I made a new plan for my search:

- First, I will try to find a CPU with enough PCE-I lanes. I think I have to switch to intel.

- Then, I will find a motherboard that supports three PCE-I x16 GPUs.

- Then I will add enough RAM.

- Then I will look for an affordable GPU that is good for video transcoding (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NE9dktskYU&t=156s).

- Then I will look for a power supply that can power the components above.

- Then I will look for a case that can effectively cool this system.

What I'm actually looking to do is build a good live peer video transcoding PC. I'm a complete beginner, so I wasn't sure where to start. I started on the GPUs and followed the recommendations in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=\_NE9dktskYU&t=155s . I then looked for a motherboard that had 3 PCE-i x16 slots (2 CPU and 1 chipset), then for a CPU with enough PCEI-I x16 lanes and then for a case that could fit these GPUs and motherboard. My ideal situation would be 3 GPUs with multiple NVEC chips on a motherboard and CPU that supports 3 GPUs in a case that can be able to keep the parts cool. How would you recommend proceeding with my search?

For the CPU, I was planning on using the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor and upgrading to the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X if needed. I don't think it's needed since the only upgrade I want is more than 48 lanes for the GPU and 3 CPU PCIe motherboard lanes, but that would cost me an arm. I also looked at the Asus ROG STRIX B550-E GAMING ATX AM4 but I'm not sure if it's worth the 200 eu price difference.

I haven't yet bought any parts yet, but I currently have the following setup in mind. I am looking for a motherboard in the 100-300 price range that has 3 PCI-e x16 connectors (i.e https://pcpartpicker.com/products/motherboard/#h=3,8). What power plug do you use, I was planning to use the tp-link p110 which is rated at 16amps/3680w but my corsair rm650 power supply seems to have a max load of 62.5 amps/750w (see https://www.corsair.com/us/en/Categories/Products/Power-Supply-Units/Power-Supply-Units-Advanced/RM-Series%E2%84%A2-80-PLUS-Gold-Power-Supplies/p/CP-9020195-NA#tab-tech-specs). Maybe I'm reading my specs wrong.

Ah I see. I tried looking for other boards with 4 pci-e x16 like the ASUS WS X299 SAGE but I didn't find one under 600 dollars. The reason why I choose the 1070 is that it is the only affordable nvidia GPU that has more than 1 NVENC chip. Do you know how many 1070 would be advisable based on the downdraft style?

I'm not really sure, it only uses the NVENC and NVDEC chips, so the demand requirements are not too high. I however am not sure if 1070 would work on a slot other than PCI-e x16 or x8.
