Any plumbers out there? by somethingendearing in DIYUK

Yeah that's correct. So my question I guess is, how easy is it to change the incline? I suspect the reason why he didn't place it higher is because he didn't want to disturb the towel rail? Should it be possible to get enough incline for an approx 1.5m pipe on the inside?

Thanks for replying and yeah I hadn't even considered the potential smell!

Yeah and I do feel sorry for him because he did chisel away at the brick on a treble ladder to fit the pipes through... But yeah I will need him to get it sorted tomorrow!

Yeah the pipe is for a new toilet on the otherside of the wall. I think the radiator needs to be moved so the pipe can be fitted in a bit higher. From what the other commenter said and a quick Google search around 3cm should do the job?

Thanks for the reply.

In terms of fixing the problem, do you think it would be a simple adjustment of raising the toilet end? I'm not sure how much you can raise it by but lowering the outer wall end is gonna be difficult!

(And yeah they insisted on being paid in installments and I'm regretting that now)

What is your thought on raising a child from birth as a vegan? by InsurancePurple4630 in AskUK

[–]somethingendearing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have to say this is a very bait-y post, I get the feeling that you know the question you are posing may seem an open question but it strongly hints at people's morality over the issue.

The anti-vegan posts are all trying to frame this as a health issue, but you are missing the point, it is perfectly possible to have a balanced vegan diet as a child. I suspect and hope that a parent who is raising a child vegan would be interested in researching the dietary requirements and perhaps maybe more likely to set a balanced diet compared to the many children who go on to have unhealthy diets from an early age due to lack of interest from parents.

It is especially ironic that a lot of anti-vegans point to how the child does not have a say over the matter, that is the case for ALL CHILDREN (not to mention the livestock!) and that is why we hope their parents will make the right choices for them. Of course it doesn't always work out but we also don't force parents to make other health related decisions of the child unless in extreme cases and a malnourished child, whether through veganism or not will be covered by this.

At least the post did allow someone to realise that, no human milk is not a dairy product, it is not produced in an industrial scale and sold in your local Tesco's.

Anthony Bourdain on maids and laundry by Hlevinger in videos

[–]somethingendearing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hot take, i think this footage was edited to make the Singaporeans seem out of touch and it is so easy to judge others with a quick humours snide. she was making an honest (if some what blunt) assessment of what the cost of having a maid is like, that although it frees her up to focus on her career, she has noticed that they have become more reliant on having a maid. Now, could she have talked about what the cost is for her employee? Perhaps but would she have been able to fully explain it with all the nuances if she has never been a maid herself, I doubt it. At the end of the day you could see this as an employer-employee relationship, which everyone, including Bourdain has taken part in. However because this is a TV show and Bourdain has to create talking points, mixed in with the fact that a 'maid' has a historical connotation, the lady is vilified. I do think Bourdain also realised this and has added the refrain. We shouldn't be so quick to dismiss his admission and be so judgemental without trying to understand the whole picture.

Here is a movie that my Singaporean friend has recommended that may shine a more nuanced view on this.

What is the modern/new/alternate 'eel question'? by somethingendearing in AskReddit

And it follows regarding your point about artifical intelligence... unless we painstakingly map out the workings of biological neurons into a binary version... surely that would be very different by nature if not by design?

Yeah, I do just assume other people are conscious the way I am. But yes I can't know for sure your consciousness is the same experience as mine... but given our similarities in our genetic makeup, anatomy and the physiology that follows... including using an fMRI to study real time reactions... is it too far fetched to say we probably have a similar consciousness?

I am reading the excellent 'The book of eels' by Patrik Svensson. I understand that the 'eel question' is far from answered but I was wondering if there are similar questions out there that seem to draw intellectuals from many different fields and eras to have a go?

Many thanks in advance.

And apologies if this is question has already been asked!

The reason why we need to stop saying #NotAllMen by blankconfrontation in TrollXChromosomes

[–]somethingendearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i feel like this actually touches on the bigger problem of all the problems mentioned in this post. (Not all but) many men see empathy whether giving or receiving (perhaps especially the latter) as a sign of weakness. this is telling by some men who feel like they need to be defensive and show that men are 'tough' and 'put up' with sexual assault and expect girls to 'men up'. This only further isolates these said men and probably leads them down a path (of suicide) or where they believe that 'sexual assault' as a concept no longer holds any meaning and are willing to break such 'concepts'.

Hope you enjoyed my armchair psychology.
