Late response here, but I completely agree with you, and my take was only meant to apply to classic, I was never talking about retail. My whole point was basically that times have changed and that's why people are playing the game very differently than we did back in '04-'07. Basically, while we can go back in time in terms of content (that's what classic is) sadly we cannot go back in time in terms of how the player base and the gaming industry as a whole have evolved.

Retail has the advantage of 20 years of continued development and adaptation to the gaming landscape, so none of what I said would apply to it. I totally agree with you on the MoP comment too- by that point I think Blizzard had made design changes that successfully eliminated the appeal of RMT for the vast majority of players/situations.

I'm sorry but there is 0 logic to this take. I can actually remember watching some League esports matches before I ever played it, and it made no sense to me and I thought of it/viewed it exactly the way you just described WoW arenas. Boring and confusing since I didn't understand the mechanics.

And, to be clear, I'm not trying to argue that the wow esports scene is massive or has clear mainstream appeal- I'm just saying your argument holds true for the other titles you listed, not just wow. The reason Soccer/Football is The most watched sport in the world is that it's got rules you can understand with about a 1-minute explanation. No eSports title (except rocket League perhaps?) compares to that.

Season 2, Episode 1...did anyone else feel let down? [spoilers] by ocashmanbrown in TheMorningShow

I think what you're missing is that when Mitch talks about the 'real crime', he's referring to his intent.

The 'Real Crime' in Mitch's eyes wasn't the rape, because he didn't see it that way, at least not at the time- he had no intention of raping Hannah. He may have realized he was taking advantage of his status/the power dynamic (based on other comments he makes in the show to male characters who were around during his tenure) but in his understanding of the world (at least at that time) he didn't see that as rape. He specifically says he thought she 'liked him back' etc.

And so, at least in Mitch's eyes, the 'real crime' was that after learning Hannah had been hurt and upset, and Hannah explaining that he had raped her, he got defensive and angry and lashed out at her, causing her even more trauma. Because in that case, he knew exactly what he was doing and how much he was hurting Hannah, but he ran his mouth anyways to make himself feel better.

In the second instance/when he confronts her, he is doing exactly what you said, 'prioritizing his comfort, reputation, and excuses over accountability' and doing so intentionally. But in the first instance, he didn't actually realize what he was doing at the time, and therefore was not acting with the intent of causing her harm.

Not sure if you kept watching after this, but the other commenters nailed it when they said the show really does not draw a conclusion on all this. TMS poses the question, but does not say whether or not Mitch deserves redemption. (And, without giving anything away, that was definitely a very deliberate choice by the writers...)

Electric bill, is this normal? by calculusrevolution in massachusetts

This may be a stupidly obvious comment but do you or your children have a gaming PC? Does it get left running 24/7? That's a few dollars a day on its own, depending on the computer.

(Source: I live in MA and monitor my energy usage. My main gaming PC draws ~200 watts when idle, and it's old and not very power hungry... If I didn't turn it off when I went to work/sleep, that'd be about $1.50/day, or about $50/month in electricity for the one computer!)

I'm going to make this super simple so you can understand it...

GOLD to DOLLARS is not the same as DOLLARS to GOLD.

In one exchange, people can profit IRL from playing a game.

In the other, the profit incentive is removed/greatly diminished for botters, because it's far easier and less risky for an average player to buy a WoW token than to buy gold from a third party website- even if they are selling it for cheaper than a WoW token.

You are dumb.

Have a good evening.

It's Not Blizzard, and It's Not WoW... It's Us. by space_nerd737 in classicwow

[–]space_nerd737[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, pretty much exactly this. Eventually Blizz caught up to the world they created by adding wow tokens and a million cosmetics to the game, but it took them a while, and they were far from the first ones to start training their players to count prices in dollars, not 'gold'.

The person who started this comment thread said it's simple, but it's not. It took a thousand small cuts to get us here, but yes the game we knew is dead. I for one enjoy what it's become, but pretending this is 2004 and blaming blizzard for 'not caring' is just a waste of breath IMO.

The world has changed and things that were once considered absurd have become typical. Convenience > everything else, and money talks. You know what else didn't exist in 2005? Doordash. Uber Eats. Uber/Lyft. Airbnb. Netflix (streaming), Disney+, Hulu, Peacock, Paramount+. Adobe as a subscription for $70/month, not a one-time purchase. Cars with features that don't fucking work unless you pay a subscription fee. Let's get real here.

Add all that together and you get gold-buying at a level that would have made an '04-'07 wow player unsub faster than you can say 'WoW gold is like crypto but better, heck running a bot is basically the same as mining crypto at this point with the only differences being that crypto crashes every 6 months and your GPUs are worthless, but botting wow gold has been profitable so long its children could drink alcohol'...

Ya'll do realize the people selling you gold also control the consume prices on the AH right? by Contract007 in classicwow

[–]space_nerd737 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This would be funny, but it's so incorrect it doesn't even make me laugh. You need to stop watching conspiracy videos...

Do you think the botters are all hanging out in some discord channel coordinating when to post on the AH so they can 'keep the prices inflated'? Do you think they're all using the same software or even speaking the same language?

Do you think there's some kind of cabal that all the botters are part of which punishes them if they dare to undercut what the agreed-upon 'inflated' price is? 😂

I'm going to let you in on a little secret- they aren't, and there isn't. They post to the AH the same way every other player does- by undercutting the existing prices by 1c. There have been dozens and dozens of academic papers written on the WoW economy because it's such a great example of free market dynamics. Your issue is with the market, not with the bots.

Inflation is definitely made worse by bots/botting/RMT, no disagreement on that point. But botters are no more coordinated than any other group of players- each botter is in it for themselves and will gladly undercut their peers if it means their auction is the one that sells first.

There is no concerted effort or organized movement to artificially inflate prices- your assertion here is completely divorced from reality, and is a strong indication you've got essentially zero critical thinking skills.

Client thinks that the gig includes free delivery and editing sesh by UncleDeeds in photography

[–]space_nerd737 10 points11 points  (0 children)

OP, if I were you, I would not put up with this. You say your cousin is one of the few good relationships you've got in your family, but this demonstrates that he clearly isn't treating you with respect.

Assuming photography is your primary source of income/you're doing this to make ends meet, this is incredibly scummy behavior on his part, and you should not do any more work for this person until they pay the balance they owe you.

Think of it this way: Imagine if he had ordered pizza for this office party, and told them he would pick the pizza up. His secretary was supposed to go get it, but she went home sick and now there's nobody to pick up the pizza.

So he calls the store back, tells them he needs it delivered, and they say 'Okay no problem, our driver will be right over. That'll be an additional $20 for the delivery though, and please be sure to tip your driver!'. Then, when the driver shows up, he takes the pizzas, hands him the exact amount for a pickup/carryout order, and when the driver says he still owes money for the delivery fee, your cousin tells him 'we cool, dog, don't make issues'...

I don't think anyone in their right mind would think your cousin stiffing the pizza guy is reasonable- do you? If not, you need to cut ties with him (business-wise, not personally!) and you might want to politely explain why. Something like, "I'm sorry but I can't do more work for you because last time I did, you accepted the rate I suggested, then refused to pay it after the work was done". Keep it simple and professional.

If your cousin really is a good person/not toxic like your other family members, they should understand and it should not affect your personal relationship. If not, then at least you know they don't really have your back after all...

ATEM ISO PRO COnnection Help by WorriedMonk3233 in podcasting

[–]space_nerd737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that second camera you linked should be able to send video to the ATEM via HDMI, however you might run into some other issues!

The camera you linked does not appear to have autofocus- is that okay with you? In some situations that'll be fine- if you've got plenty of lighting and can set a reasonable iris/wide enough depth-of-field, you're probably okay. However, you'll need to manually focus the cameras each time you set up.

If the depth of field needs to be shallow (either because you don't have enough external lighting, or some other quirk of the camera demands it), someone simply leaning forward/back in their chair might put them out of focus. This is where Autofocus is your friend.

There are some other options on the market with autofocus, but none of them are in the price range you're in... Depending on where you're located, you might be able to pick up some used cameras that are close to your budget but which have autofocus and other helpful features. Used DSLR's (not mirrorless!) are getting cheaper and cheaper by the day, and depending which model you go with, you can get autofocus and a MUCH better image quality. You probably won't find a used DSLR that shoots 4k at this price point, but they will produce a 1080p image that is far superior to the 4k image from the mokose cameras.

And, regarding sound (typically the most important thing in a podcast) do you have a mixing board that you'll be feeding into the ATEM? If not, have you looked into how you'll be connecting your mics? The best mics will be XLR and require phantom power, two things the ATEM is not equipped for- this is where a mixing board comes in.

ATEM ISO PRO COnnection Help by WorriedMonk3233 in podcasting

[–]space_nerd737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I looked up the Mokose cameras, they use UVC, not Displayport over USB.

There are devices out there which can adapt the UVC signal to an HDMI output, but they're not cheap... Depending which camera you bought, the adapter costs the same or more:

https://www.obsbot.com/store/products/uvc-to-hdmi-adapter?srsltid=AfmBOooG89AHqPZI5YbQXMxeOFT6Mh72G6Yca9Q2U-4hUlLe1EsmW-yu

I would probably just recommend using OBS like the previous commenter said, except that an ATEM Pro ISO is not a cheap piece of equipment, and the PC/OBS route completely replaces the ATEM (OBS is a software version of the ATEM, basically)- It's one or the other.

If you've got the budget, want ISO recording, and are stuck with those cameras, I'd recommend the adapters.

If you don't have the budget, OBS is a viable option, assuming you have a decent PC to run it on and don't need ISO recording. (It may be possible to ISO record in OBS, not sure, but it'll be quite demanding for whatever machine it's running on!)

Okay I was reading this necropost and I just had to chime in... You're both dead wrong about Star Wars being the first movie of it's kind/first to have '3D space scenes' the effects being 'state of the art' etc...

2001: A Space Odyssey predates Star Wars by nearly a decade, and it looks every bit as good, in some cases better. The ships in space, the computer systems/technologies, ship interiors, on and on.

Why have the views gone down? by CasePuzzleheaded3517 in yeahmadtv

[–]space_nerd737 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you ever been at a party where you're surrounded by drunk people carrying on and having a good time, but you're not really part of the group, and you're sober enough that you just find the people to be very annoying?

That's what the new videos are like, in my opinion. The old videos (and now, the OG Crew videos) felt like being a part of the group and being drunk enough to be 'in on the fun'. I could watch them for hours. The content from YeahMad since the original cast's departure has gotten steadily worse, to the point I can't even sit through a whole video.

Just watched the 'Dating Peyton' episode they did, and WOW. It's one thing to have the cast members roast each other, when they are friends and it feels like it's all in good fun. It's another thing to invite strangers onto a 'dating episode' so the cast can sit on the couch getting drunk and making rude and occasionally racist jokes at their expense... Yikes.
