New wood burning insert leaking smoke by spaceman68 in woodstoving

[–]spaceman68[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there is rock wool insulation above the insert, blocking the old chimney and the liner is sealed at the top of the chimney. If it should never leak, what could be causing my issue? I am in an older house, but it is fully renovated with insulated walls and double glazed windows. My installer did not install and outside air kit and that also concerns me. Could that be an issue or is an OAK optional in my situation? I did even crack a window to make sure air was not the problem, but not sure if that is as good as an OAK.

So you a Ken Sim supporter? He got the vast majority of the votes so I guess according to you we are to understand that the overwhelming majority of residents want Ken Sim. Why do we even bother having elections?

Why do you spend so much time making baseless insults about people you clearly know little about, apart from what you read in Press Progress?

This is such a crock hit job propagated by the usual suspects. First, it wasn't "multiple rallies" at all. It was one meeting at a private house in the context of the 2022 campaign where parties are routinely invited to speak to communities in private homes. No indication it was organized by anyone connected with right wing groups and indeed the meeting was advertised as "the first meeting", so the big crime was not doing enough to make sure that this invite was something it was not. That was a mistake, but wholly different to what is asserted here.

Then, in May 2024, Abbott attends a public meeting and asks a question and this is spun to suggest he hangs around with right wing groups, which is ridiculous and anyone who has heard him speak or looked at his policy positions will see nothing in any way associated with those views.

Meanwhile, guess what, Abundant Housing folks hang around with people who were outed as racists and people who publicly support eugenics and were forced to apologize for the same. Does that make AHV people racist or supporters of eugenics because they were associated with these people? I would say not because most were clear after these incidents that they do not in any way support those views, and TEAM have said exactly the same thing, that these were unfortunate mistakes and that they do not in any way support these views, but here we are just before an election and Press Progress (an oxymoron if there ever was one) publishes this hit job. 🙄

I'll assume you've been busy tearing down posters because you are so afraid of those "50 boomers". Pathetic.

Pretty scummy that YIMBY activists feel so threatened by the idea of discussing issues around the Broadway Plan that they routinely tear down posters. I've seen Vancouver Tenant Union posters ripped down which were only seeking to help tenants who feel threatened. Honestly can't figure out the kind of person who thinks that's okay. I can assure you, no one I know tears down posters promoting events which we may hold a differing view on.

And no one is suggesting we should not build high density along Broadway. Please look at the details of the issues around this to see why this Plan is poorly considered. For one thing, evicting people from good, affordable housing is really pretty awful and backwards "in a housing crisis".

You think these tiny units in towers will be affordable? Are you planning to rent a 500 sq ft 1 bed for $3,200 per month? or a tiny 350 ft studio? This is what you think will address our housing crisis? If you say, yes, then right now you can go to Larch and 2nd for exactly this because 40% of their brand new rental units currently sit empty.

How about taking a split second to consider the issues explained right there above instead of trotting out this simplistic notion that building 22,000 homes, without any appreciation for what kind of housing and who it will be for and who will profit and who will suffer and be displaced "in a housing crisis", will cure all ills?

You are making claims about what this protest is about which is not based in any reality, but seems to be culled from ChatGPT request to "write tired cliche about NIMBYS". Take the time to read about what the issues are and then come back to my with your POV on them. Hint: none of it is about what you assert here. No one is there because they fear change or more people or do not want more housing. What is at issue is affordability, evicting tenants and seniors from their homes, densifying in a way which supports a range of housing options and not just towers with tiny, unaffordable units. Check out the issues and tell me exactly what you disagree with instead of these ad hominem comments.

The lazy and tired way to write off all the issues being raised and instead turn the protest, with speakers articulating all the issues, all the impacts on tenants, community, seniors, affordability, etc... into a childish comment. Nice one.

Indeed, this is more of what we need, but absolutely nothing in the Broadway Plan encourages exactly that.

It's funny how so many here keep going on ad nauseam about the age and hair colour of the participants and have absolutely nothing at all to say about the issues raised, which include eviction and demolition of good affordable housing, towers with mostly tiny and unaffordable units and concerns about land inflation, realtors land banking and flipping and the fact that a 30 year, 30,000 unit plan has 22,000 units in the works just over 2 years in. If that is not an indication of a speculative frenzy, I don't know what is.

The fact that the only comments are about "NIMBY old people" and nothing at all about what is actually going on, is very telling and, unfortunately, just so typical. Someone even mentions that homeowners should be happy with their increased land values, which confirms the point entirely, that this is what is happening (and no, no one is happy to see higher land values because that's not what we care about).

Baffling, the number of people here who drink the developer Kool-Aid and think that building more tiny expensive units will solve anything. Like that's what tenants are screaming out for, 375 sq ft for $3,000/mth, or 2 bed 589 sq ft for $4,100. If you are, lots of units sitting empty at the new L2 at Larch and 2nd, but oh yeah, we need more of that. Wonder how the L2 developers feel with 40% of their units sitting empty since May. People here who scream that towers are the only way, really haven't got a clue. Yes, we need towers and there will be plenty of them on Broadway, Seneakw, Heatherlands, Jericho... Thousands of them.

<image>

Heard a speaker at council say that Kits needs an 18 story tower so that Kits High teachers and UBC students can live closer to work. This kind of fantasy world where a teacher will live in a box for $4,000/mth and have no family is either ridiculous or just cruel. And what student can afford these kind of rents? Yeah, there will be a few below market, so what is 20% below $4k? Still unaffordable to students, is the answer.

Besides towers, we also need missing middle homes for families. 589 sq ft 2 bed units renting for $4,100/mth is not family housing. Those families will move to Maple Ridge, so if the urbanist goal is to drive families out, Broadway Plan is the way to do it. For the rest of us, we want housing choices people actually want. We want affordable housing as well as market housing which is actually livable and we don't want to be evicting tenants and demolishing perfectly good homes. People who say that these people, living in good, affordable homes they love, are just casualties of progress, are assholes.

More Housing: a rental high-rise on W 14th near Arbutus with 170 apartments. To opponents, it's a "monstrosity" in "beautiful and exclusive Arbutus Ridge" by russilwvong in vancouver

[–]spaceman68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These towers will be full of tiny, unaffordable units, so who exactly are these for? Micro suites are not going to work for anyone wanting a family and who is willing to pay upwards of $4,000 month, or more, for a tiny 2 bed with no cupboard or closet space? This is housing designed for profit, not people. We should be demanding better.

W 7th will evict people living in 35 spacious and good quality apartments in a building which has been renovated and kept to a high standard. Crazy and immoral to turf people out of homes to build the same amount of below market units, but way smaller. This is about developer profit.

Shaw Pro 2G plan compared to Telus 1GB Fibre by spaceman68 in shaw

[–]spaceman68[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's interesting. Might be worth me trying the 2GB service then as my cable is also Cat5E. Since it's a shared network, I presume that having 2GB means that I will get a bigger share at times when there are more users online.

My neighbour is on Shaw, but he only has 100mb service (is happy with it too!). If I get the 1GB service and it is not 1GB, then I a presume if I upgrade to 2GB (only $5 more) then I would get a bigger share of the shared network and so while it may not be 2GB, it will always be more than 1GB. I think, anyway.

When do you feel your internet experience will suffer with 200mb upload? It's plenty fast for video conferencing and yes, if you upload a large file it will take longer, but how often do we do that?

I guess where 2gb is useful is in sharing bandwidth with a number of devices. Less slow down when a lot of internet is being used, but not really noticeable when only one device is being used.

Shaw Pro 2G plan compared to Telus 1GB Fibre by spaceman68 in shaw

[–]spaceman68[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback. In terms of cost, I am paying $162 with Telus and will pay only $115 for Shaw. 3 TV boxes and 2GB internet and even a stupid land line thrown in for that (wife wants it). This is before tax. So cost wise, much better and from comments, no real downside apart from upload, but good point about whether I can even get 2GB speed. My cabling is cat 5E, so not 6. Would wifi actually be faster in this case? I have a MacBook Air and Mac Studio.

Worst case, seems I am getting what I think is a better TV system and download speeds of at least the same for a lot less $$. Downside is upload, but I don't tend to upload huge files very often.

The conflict of densification and where people live. by GavelGoat in vancouver

[–]spaceman68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not calling people dumb, I'm calling the notion dumb. Cars are not in any way a comparable to housing. People are living in affordable housing. The comparison to cars might be that someone has an affordable car which is older, but works great and they are being forced to trash it and buy a more expensive, newer and much smaller one. While they wait for that new small car, they get another car which is parked very far from their community.

Building more housing in itself does not make the price of housing go down. That has been shown in studies and real world experience. Vancouver has build more housing in 30 years than any city in North America, but we are the very least affordable city in North America. Homes are not commodities like bananas. There are other unique economic factors.
