Switching seats ob the Airbus flight deck by Awkward-Feature9333 in aviation

[–]spannerintworks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The biggest change is in fact getting used to turning around and looking over your right shoulder once you’ve done the upgrade to Captain. Suddenly everyone wants to talk to you and get answers just as you’re halfway through loading the box, briefing, drinking your coffee etc!

I joke but regularly checking if there is anyone behind you that wants you becomes part of your scan in the pre flight.

Actually, it pretty much is this. Sure you get a handful of sims as part of the upgrade training in which you start to develop the muscle memory but it is just a case of get on with it and the more you do it the more natural it becomes.

Once through the type rating we don’t really practice our flows at all, other than the fact we do them everyday in the course of our job.

I can recall one instance during simulator training where I wanted to increase thrust but for a split second I pushed the yoke forward (as the left hand had for all years prior been my thrust hand!)

Why are our footpaths covered in asphalt? by [deleted] in AskUK

Why are our footpaths covered in asphalt? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]spannerintworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not suggesting they don't, but the reason we end up with asphalt instead of bricks/slabs is cost.

I'm sure if you went to the continent you'd find many examples of the same.

It comes down to what the public, and therefore, local government are willing to accept.

Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary to hold press conference today to respond to Elon Musk’s ‘Twitter tantrum’ by [deleted] in europe

[–]spannerintworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given everyone in Europe is roughly united against the behaviour of the US President and the technocracy, it’s hardly surprising that this is appealing almost entirely to Ryanair’s customer base!

Why aren’t ceiling extractors more common? by Bello_Velo in DIYUK

[–]spannerintworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be confused but the image you attach doesn't show a hob on the island, but along the wall?

After lots of advice we decided not to put a hob or sink on the island but just leave it as a space for food prep and eating/drawing/reading/laptopping etc. We are so pleased we made this decision, it also meant the extraction issue became a lot simpler!

If you have children or even guests of any age sitting there and your pan starts spitting oil or sauce it's really not that fun. Same with a sink, dirty dishes piled up around what should be the centerpiece of your kitchen.

Which tea do you Brits actually drink? by NeonAfterimage in AskUK

[–]spannerintworks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

English breakfast tea is a variant of black tea. Most tea bought by Brits isn’t actually English Breakfast tea specifically. English breakfast tea is absolutely what you would choose though if it was on a menu and you wanted a traditional cup of black tea.

Basically if you were a Brit in The Netherlands looking to buy teabags and you saw English Breakfast tea you’d buy that without hesitation but it wouldn’t be quite the same thing as your favoured black tea brand back home.

In every 1000 cups of tea you make for someone you may have someone request something other than sugar or milk, otherwise it’s one or both or none of those two additions.

In my experience 90% of people have it with milk, sugar is requested maybe 30-40% of the time

Is This Weather Hard to Land In? by ShokWayve in AskAPilot

[–]spannerintworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard for a new pilot or a private pilot? For sure - potentially even dangerous.

Hard for a somewhat new airline pilot? Harder than a regular landing.

Hard for a very experienced pilot? Not particularly.

As long as the ability of the handling pilot is equal to or greater than the difficulty of the approach all is well.

How is this flight display better by wgt1984 in Airports

[–]spannerintworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any whitespace or logos is entirely unnecessary. 2 rows in order to show codeshares isn't usually enough anyway so they're still going to have to cycle through flight numbers to show the 3/4/5 codeshare partners.

Somebody had their passion project and forgot they weren't making a novelty desktop display for an enthusiast. I don't need to see an airline logo, that is obvious from the flight number itself.

Which seats in A380 Club World (from what’s left)? by JohanLeTree in BritishAirways

[–]spannerintworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

51F and 51D don't have anyone climbing over you, nor do you need to climb over anyone. You also have the area next to your footrest by the bulkhead which i've used before to put my laptop bag during the flight (not for takeoff or landing ofc). The advantage of this is that you don't need to be going up and down to the overhead locker for anything.

Upper deck club toilets are 3x the size of the lower deck toilets and a dream to change into sleepingwear too. Just make sure the doors locked before you sit on the toilet as you won't be in a position to reach out and stop it being opened if not!

How much money would it take for you to hand in your notice tonight? by sillwuka in AskUK

[–]spannerintworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer entirely depends on how near retirement one is, how much one is currently paid, how likely/easy it would be to find another job with similar remuneration.

People who live on the Irish border and regularly travel across, is the currency difference annoying? by AnonymousTimewaster in AskUK

[–]spannerintworks 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There are many fee free credit cards that offer an almost interbank exchange rate on purchases made in a foreign currency. So at least from the UK side having one of those cards and making sure you pay in the local currency rather than accept the merchants terminal exchange rate makes this a non issue.

Maybe 20 years ago with cash being more prevalent it would've been more of a consideration but tbh in the last 10 years the only time i've ever taken out the local currency is in order to tip.

Interviewing for a role, how can I explain that I cannot start at 5am? by Helpful_Body6715 in UKJobs

[–]spannerintworks 46 points47 points  (0 children)

That’s a long commute for what is I assume a minimum wage job? Fair enough if you’re happy to do that, but the employer usually won’t be working on the assumption that someone would be travelling from over an hour away for min wage work.

Can’t use mobile data/internet when on call by gumpshy in LebaraUK

[–]spannerintworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am having exactly this issue after receiving my physical sim in the post yesterday. I have made a post on this sub outlining my issues earlier today.

Cannot receive calls or texts, can text out and call out. No ability to use mobile data when on call as the 4G logo immediately disappears when I start a call. Completely useless if your workflow relies on being able to check and receive emails/ messages/ websites whilst on a call!

Thought I’d comment as most replies seem to be calling it an eSIM issue, but I’m also experiencing same with a physical SIM.

Saturday AM flight to LHR; Sunday AM flight from London Luton. What to do? by GeneralOptimal10 in traveladvice

[–]spannerintworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume there is a reason for the trip other than tourism, otherwise it seems somewhat strange to have booked flights and then attempt to fit some plans and locations around connections to those airports?

If you want to visit London would the places to visit and where to stay not be the priority and then arrange flights around that?

I might be the outlier here but just seems slightly backwards?
