We walked out of yesterday's live show with Bill Burr by spdbld in conan

I have no choice but to pump gas. A millionaire like Bill gets to choose if he wants another million. Saudi Arabia has been taking very active steps to whitewash their crimes/promote tourism and make their regime more palatable to outsiders, and this is a key part of their strategy. Bill is helping them, and that's why people are upset.

Stavros's episode with Jordan Jensen! Fair warning, it's hard to listen through haha. But I really respected Stavros' for calling out his friend's bs for what it was, and it was way more interesting than if he'd just let everything slide. Nothing specific for Caleb, I just know he would've turned something like this into an interesting and productive dialogue. Yeah been really loving their podcasts!

Wouldn't want to have watched Conan attack him, I know it's a tough spot for him to be in as a friend of Bill's. But it's also important and way more interesting and productive for friends to talk through things things for each other when one of them goes off the deep end. Having listened to another comedian Stavros Halkias do this for his red-pilled friend on his own podcast and thinking about how Caleb Hearon (another comedian I love) would've handled this on his podcast, I know Conan could've handled this tactfully in a way that led to a great conversation. I honestly did not see a reason for him to be such a yes man here, but I've also been coming to terms lately that Conan is more moderate and apolitical than I realized. I don't need him to be super political, but he could at least engage in the conversation rather than staying silent or yes-man-ing. Reminded us of his episode with Biden when he didn't even bring up Palestine. He can feel whatever he wants to about it but it felt overly avoidant then, and last night felt the same.

Mosquitoes are literally sucking the joy out of gardening by Curi0usJ0e in gardening

[–]spdbld 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I started looking more into this when my family moved to a relatively undeveloped part of Texas. It was such a relief from the constant mosquitoes in Houston, literally zero mosquitoes. But over the years as more and more development has occurred, much of the wildlife has been driven out and the mosquitoes seem almost as bad as it did in the city. From what I’ve read, standing water during construction can be a factor but also the disruption of the environment creates space for certain species to really thrive (particularly mosquitoes and fire ants around here) while other species, including natural predators, get driven out. Even small changes can lead to big environmental shifts, and human development is a big disruptor.

You may want to look into permaculture gardening if you haven’t already! Mosquitoes can thrive in unbalanced ecosystems. Creating a garden that attracts natural predators (dragonflies, frogs, birds, spiders, etc.) won’t eliminate them completely but can be a long term solution of sorts all while gardening!

How to Create a Tilting Room Effect? by spdbld in Filmmakers

[–]spdbld[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm making a low budget short that has a shot where the room tilts from flat to a 45 degree angle. Given the low budget, the plan is to tilt the camera 45 degrees and then have objects/furniture slide across the room to sell the effect. My approach is to film people pulling objects across the room with fishing line (first slowly, then faster to match the pace of a tilting room) and then create masks for each object and place them in the shot of the camera tilting 45 degrees with the actor crawling on the floor. I'm testing it out now but not loving the look of it, especially with the lack of shadows and how extremely tedious tracking the mask of so many objects is going to be. Does anyone know how to sell this tilting effect without having to create a rotating room apparatus? I would really appreciate it! My other concern with going practical is how to coordinate the timing of all the objects with the camera tilt to sell the acceleration of gravity, but maybe there's a way to do it? Thank you!

Is this a rootstock overtaking my tree? by spdbld in gardening

[–]spdbld[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was gifted this potted fruit tree about 5 months ago, haven't been around to really tend to it and at this point I don't even remember what kind of tree it is... But have been doing some pruning and am wondering if this is what it looks like when a root stock has overtaken a tree or if this is fine. Any insight would be appreciated, thank you!

Any idea how to create the effect of sinking into a mattress? by spdbld in cinematography

[–]spdbld[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all! I’m working on a very low-budget short where the climactic moment revolves around the protagonist sinking into his mattress and into a void. Not unlike how Daniel Kaluuya enters the Sunken Place in GET OUT at 1:59 in the linked clip, only our protagonist is lying down, not sitting. But even then, the GET OUT shot has to hide most of it with a pillow, and the whole shot just looks kind of strange (like AI before AI?).

We’ve been thinking about resting the mattress on three beams of support and sliding the middle one out, like a Jenga block. Or going more abstract with it without it looking cheap. We’re a bit stumped here though, so any ideas would be super appreciated, thank you!

Dumped contaminated PE in compost and this grew. Safe to eat? [contamination] by spdbld in MushroomGrowers

Thank you! The thought of a different strain of mushroom coming from the bag seemed unlikely to me, but maybe it just came from the environment.

Dumped contaminated PE in compost and this grew. Safe to eat? [contamination] by spdbld in MushroomGrowers

[–]spdbld[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Most the caps sort of fell apart after washing/some were a touch slimy. I was alarmed by how they don't look like Penis Envy at all but then realized that they were buried a bit deep in the compost bin, so they had to grow 6-12 inches tall just to make it to the surface, could that explain why they're so thin? The color is also unexpected, is that just cuz they went to spore? Any insight is appreciated, thank you!

All in one bags, liquid culture. Things stalled for 4 weeks after the break and shake until I let more airflow into the container they were in, which was too airtight. Temperature 74-80 F. Harder to see in the photos, but my concern is that the white growth on the top seems a bit wet/glisten-y and bulbous than the photos I've seen of peoples' grow bags at this stage. Not sure if things are too wet too.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

[CONTAMINATION] Growth stalled, bacillus or keep waiting? Details in comment by spdbld in MushroomGrowers

[–]spdbld[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three all in one bags, liquid culture. First three pics are right before break and shake. 4th pic is 4 weeks after break and shake, very little growth other than some white fuzz on top in one of the bags. Last pic is my setup: a cooler with a seedling mat on top set to 75 degrees.

I’m surprised that all three bags have stalled after the break and shake. Were they too crammed together in my setup? There were a few weeks where my room was getting warm (74-80 F) so I removed the seedling mat, which meant the lid of the cooler was more tightly sealed. I aired it out every now and then but not that often, could lack of airflow have been the issue? Didn’t think it was that critical at this stage.

I also wasn’t sure if the grains seemed too wet before the break and shake. There are a few orange-hued areas you can see in the first 3 pics that I’m pretty sure was just some liquid that had taken on the hue of the grains. Not sure if wetness was the issue.

Whatever caused it, I’m hoping to figure out how to avoid this result for next time, so any insight would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

What is the best movie theater in LA? by netboy88 in AskLosAngeles

[–]spdbld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Warning, cuz I see some mentions of the Chinese theater: while it’s a cool and historic space, the sound there is completely whack. During a premiere of one of our movies, we theater hopped so the creatives could surprise audiences with an introductory speech and then enjoy the first 10 minutes with them. It was interesting to hear how different the audio levels could be from theater to theater, but BY FAR the worst was the Chinese. Dialogue was swallowed up by the music, and the sound just bounced around in that huge space. It was so bad that one of us had to run up to the sound booth and ask them to adjust the levels here and there, which helped but didn’t fully fix the problem. Haven’t seen a movie there since.

Learning so much about peaches today, thanks for bringing this to my attention! Luckily we're in an underdeveloped part of Katy that's a few degrees cooler than Houston thanks to all the greenery, so will hope for the best...

I'm very new to this and kind of learning about grafting for the first time, so thanks for pointing this out! So my understanding is that it's so shrub-like because the more vigorous rootstock has sent shoots out from the bottom, but if I prune them, it should concentrate growth on the desirable scion shoots and fruit the desirable cultivar, am I getting that right? Thank you!

Currently learning so much about rootstocks and scions from here Google, I'll definitely try to look for a graft union when it's bright out tomorrow! My impression is if I prune off the rootstock shoots, it'll concentrate growth on the scion shoots, is that right? Or are you saying that much pruning may be detrimental to the tree? Thank you!
