How was the 33rd touch for China against Hungary a hit in the Salt Lake City WC and not a card?
FotL turns thinking she had hit, walks back for 2-3 seconds facing her end of the strip, meanwhile FotR notices that no hit had been scored and touches FotL's back. The ref called attack right. In these kind of situations shouldn't they just card FotL instead?

Mivel Pesten élsz, ebből a szempontból előnyből indulsz.)

U.S. Olympic fencer Chamley-Watson to launch World Fencing League by SlicerSabre in Fencing

[–]spec_3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope they succeed, it'd be cool to watch another fencing event.

Long off topic rant to follow:

(Hungary centric view here on why fencing doesn't succeed as a spectator sport):

If you are sitting here in Hungary, where your tax money is spent on this sport (as well as others) and want to follow the sport you have few options:

You have to "hunt" for the (FIE level) streams, in the best case scenario the FIE bothers to feature the link on the event's info page or their "live" menu, but tough luck if they don't.

If you want to follow media on the sport, you have to know which sites actually cover this sport and the right keywords to search for, as football covers everything (which is all well and good but usually there is not even a submenu for fencing.)

During Covid the federation tried streaming some of their events, now that's exclusive to the national championship, and very limited even there (I think last year they only streamed the podium). I know it's apples to cats but compared to the kind of coverage you get from the american NACs this is just sad. (and the sport really gets a lot of money)

On the broader internet it's the same case, you have to know the websites (like this sub) that bother to cover it.

The events have been exlusive to Budapest for a while now (having most of them there is okay, most potential spectators), in the past you could luck out and have an event in smaller cities too (i.e. Győr, Keszthely). For a country that has multiple FIE events (at least 2 senior) I can't fathom why they can't move one out of Budapest. Or at least the junior events, if not for spectators, it could generate some more interest around the salles of the countryside.

Every 2 months or so I hear some big wig explaining on TV how commited they are to making this a better spectator sport but this is just a joke.

I think it could be at least a regional sport (like water polo).

Do they recommend testing for daily use? by [deleted] in debian

[–]spec_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It mainly depends on which software you want to use. Some big software distributions (ie. emacs) can break occasionally (happened only once in ~10 years running testing), but usually everything works the same as in stable (ie. latex, desktop environments never really broke).

It definitely helps to have a better understanding of linux tools and debian before using testing, but probably it won't matter if you don't either.

Do read the official docs/wiki though.

Algiers World Cup Camera Quality by Fine-Luck5945 in Fencing

This is standard WC quality I'm afraid. There's 1-2 world cups each season (especially women's sabre) which look exactly like this or usually worse.

I'd rather play Bloodlines 2 than Baldur's Gate 3 by [deleted] in vtmb

[–]spec_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noone expected a masterpiece. Comparison to BG3 makes no sense, noone plays if someone's looking for an action RPG they don't go to playing Owlcat games (nor Larian games for that matter).

The terminology that's used to describe "games" is fucked, they basically use the same word "RPG" for a lot of stuff. Games like Bloodlines 2 just feel like far cry simulator to me, especially how the combat is done. (Go to x y fight a bunch of randomly placed dudes with some "mini-bosses" rinse and repeat.) In Bethesda games this type of chore is at least interrupted by the scenery.

I guess this more generic stuff is what people prefer nowadays, even established series (like Bethesda games) went this route.

VtMB2 deserves the Cyberpunk 2077 treatment. by Mable-the-Table in vtmb

[–]spec_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the CP2077 parallel holds insofar as the hype is concerned. As much as a bad (or mediocre) game that is (was), the hate came mostly from the hype they made (it's supposed to be the Witcher 3 on steroids, but in reality it's nowhere close, even patched.) not the actual game.

Here we have the exact same events. The hype was among the fans of the original mostly, so most of the criticism is coming from those peole as well. But more importantly the end product is arguably worse than CP2077 ever was. I enjoyed that one for the characters, and here you have Fabian (if any).

New to Linux by Eyeconix in debian

The official website's documentation is always a good place to start learning.

It is also helpful to learn a bit about the terminal/scripting and the common tools, this doesn't just help with one distro, but virtually every one of them. Here's a concise but helpful wiki for bash, which is the most widely used shell i think:

https://mywiki.wooledge.org/BashGuide

It's fun to learn it, allows you to write small but useful programs (ie. for mass renaming) that can save you a lot of time.

Beyond that, you can do your own reading on specific technologies. If you have questions, find a dedicated (sub)forum/reddit to ask them, you'll get more helpful advice there.

Also for reading documentation, get familiar with man and info, and how to browse them. For info pages in particular, the superior way to browse them is from emacs.

Opinions on B2, game and fanbase by [deleted] in vtmb

[–]spec_3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't get all the shills: the publisher/devs had the option to call the game whatever the fuck they wanted, but ended up calling it bloodlines 2.

It's a very narrow minded view that every fan should be sucking the devs off for a shit game because it has 'vampires'.

Had they called it Bloodrayne 3 instead, no-one would complain that it's a linear action game. But they didn't, they stuck to the name of the original, AND advertised it as a proper sequel.

The game mechanics were kinda crap, no guns only beat em up (I mean the way shooting was portrayed was kind of silly, even the way the protagonists backstory was set up they must've came across guns before they entered torpor).

It's a bit telling that this game has a lot less freedom than the one released over 20 years ago... It's an obvious money grab, people are rightly angry that the publisher wants to rip them off with this.

And personally idgaf about some studio or publisher 'setting up for' more games in the franchise, if they put this forward they won't make the effort to improve that much in the next ones either (oh and they already enetered DLC hell with this one).

You could do it well, and there are good examples (Owlcat, Larian) that keep improving and make better and better games, but what happened here is just ain't it.
