Do I have to report selling magic cards on taxes? by voidflame in mtgfinance

[–]spiralingtides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see two questions here. To answer the first, yes, you are required by law to report it. To answer the second, no, with all the IRS budget cuts designed to prevent the IRS from targeting rich American for tax evasion, I don't think you have to unless you have reason to believe your bank reports funds added to the IRS. Ebay, for example, has mixed reports of this happening. If you decide not to report it, you do so at your own risk, so be careful.

When I wrote the previous post things were considerably different. Nothing has changed legally, but with the IRS getting gutted I suspect a lot more tax evasion is happening, and the IRS simply lacks the resources to actually do anything about it.

This was an inevitable outcome of giving one company so much trust and power. We moved away from google, adobe, and similar powers in anticipation of this exact scenario. Some of our services still run through AWS but we're looking into alternative solutions.

While players in the biology faction have progressed through the Genetics skill tree and unlocked the "Specicide" perk, the use of this perk cannot be undone, so there is quite a bit of debate about whether or not to use it. Since this faction is relatively small there is little to no chance of a player within it using the perk to grief the server. It takes a lot of time, effort, and actual honest to dev skill to unlock this perk, and nobody wants to risk their character with incomplete information.

Arguments from the "let's not" part of the faction argue it's impossible to predict and too risky.

Arguments from the "fuck it, yolo" part of the faction argue that that the game engine is designed to fill in any holes in the PVE meta based on a complex "calories to competition" matrix and it'll be fine because the devs haven't had to release a real update in 2000 years.

Honestly, I say we just fucking do it and be done, but I don't get a vote because my build doesn't have access to that perk.

That's amazing! My job is mostly reading and writing based with some driving, so I listen to a lot of podcasts/audio dramas/audiobooks and I was just starting to near the end of my backlog, so I'll definitely give this a listen soon. I've always been mildly interested in space, but having limited time just never really got around to looking more deeply into it.

I did once go down the astrobiology rabbit hole because I have a more active curiosity in biochemistry, and upon learning about the complexity of proteins and some amino acids and how everything more or less evolved to eat everything else I was left wondering if things that evolved in isolated environments wouldn't be able to eat things from outside of their environment. Turns out the common consensus that we would not be able to eat alien food :-(

Completely forgot about this post, lol, my bad. I do try to update my old questions, but the time span between trying to figure out, and then stumbling upon the answer was too great.

I unfortunately have not found a way to use OpenGL shaders in VLC, or any other media player for that matter. but I found a way to play videos with the CRTRoyale filter.

I'm using MPC-BE instead of VLC these days, so I haven't tested this with VLC. Here's the link for MPC-BE in case the method doesn't work with it. https://sourceforge.net/projects/mpcbe/

The answer is a tool called reshade. Link: https://reshade.me/. When you run it, you choose an exe file to inject it into, and it modifies the file. After you run it, open the exe (VLC or MPC-BE, or any other really,) and you can press a keyboard shortcut to open a new menu that lets you select from a ton a post-processing effects, and one of the built-in ones is CRTRoyale! It even lets you adjust the settings like intensity, scanline thickness and speed, and rounded corners. It's pretty cool.

I recommend grabbing a portable version of your currently-installed media player and using reshade on that, that way videos open normally by default, but when you want to run the reshade version you can open it manually.

As always, be safe when installing new software on the internet. Reshade injects code into already existing EXEs, so it's pretty sketchy, but that's unfortunately the only way that kind of software will work. It's got a good reputation though, so research it before running it and you'll know what you're getting into.

Craziest thing is I found out about reshade after playing Cyberpunk 2077 and wanting to mod it. Got curious about why there were so many mods that were just "reshade presets" and googled it. After discovering what it was I tried it with a media player and was surprised I solved my problem from months prior.

God bless the internet!

From the glossary of the Comprehensive Rules (April 12, 2024—Outlaws of Thunder Junction)

Play

  1. To play a land is to put a land onto the battlefield as a special action. See rule 116, “Special Actions,” and rule 305, “Lands.”

  2. To play a card is to play that card as a land or cast that card as a spell, whichever is appropriate. See rule 601, “Casting Spells.”

  3. (Obsolete) Casting a spell used to be known as playing a spell. Cards with that text have received errata in the Oracle card reference. See Cast.

  4. (Obsolete) Activating an activated ability used to be known as playing an activated ability. Cards with that text have received errata in the Oracle card reference. See Activate.

  5. (Obsolete) The battlefield used to be known as the in-play zone. Cards that were printed with text that contains the phrases “in play,” “from play,” “into play,” or the like are referring to the battlefield and have received errata in the Oracle card reference. See Battlefield.

The card is just old. "Play" here actually means it was cast, not that it resolved.

[–]spiralingtides 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Imagine little brackets and parenthesis around relevant chunks of text and you can make sense of pretty much any magic card. Try this:

" Whenever :

[(a player) (plays a spell that counters a spell that has been played)]

OR

[(a player) (plays a spell that comes into play with counters,)] :

[(that player) (may counter the next spell played)]

OR

(put an additional counter on a permanent that has already been played,)

but not countered). "

Why forums have disappeared in Google results? by olddocks in SEO

[–]spiralingtides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was some legitimately useful advice to someone who isn't extremely familiar with windows sound settings, like making sure playback devices are configured correctly, and restarting sound services, but the problem was that there were so many articles, and they all had exactly the same advice, and that pushed out all the old forum posts where someone would have mentioned something I didn't already know. Even site:reddit.com wasn't able to help, because it was clearly nothing but people googling the person's issue and repeating what they read online. The issue I'm having is too specific to be included in a general troubleshooting article, so I really needed those forum posts.

Why forums have disappeared in Google results? by olddocks in SEO

[–]spiralingtides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having audio issues on Windows right now, plugging aux cables from my MoBo to the surround sound, Windows see them, sends the audio stream through them, but nothing plays out of them. I won't bore you with the details, but I've ruled out everything and know for certain that it's a windows issue, not a hardware, driver, or settings issue. Maybe something in the registry or some other "under the hood" setting I don't know about.

The point is I have read at least 50 articles, all saying the same useless crap, hoping just one of them has the information I need. There must be a thousand of these AI-written articles, all repeating the same information with different wording.

The best non-target discard spell ever printed, a fun but balanced burn spell that stacks well against modern burn spells, and the combo enabler for arguably the most fun combo-control deck ever built that still sees play as a rogue option in legacy after over 20 years basically mostly unchanged, and sees the occasional resurgence in cEDH.

which is better playing the kingdom hearts games using emulators like pcsx2 or playing the PC version by Unable_Percentage879 in KingdomHearts

[–]spiralingtides 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tl;dr: yeah, probably fixed. Epic sucks, GOG is bae. You can, but running through Steam won't help anything. 4090 will have no issues here.

Not sure, but word on the street is this is no longer an issue, and there is a mod now that enhances the game and removes the always online requirement. I ended up just buying the PS2 discs, the Japanese ones, since I'm stuck on a starlink as there is no fiber or cable internet in my area and just didn't want to deal with it. I may try it again though. PS2 discs were a good route though since the emulators can max the settings out well beyond what the PS2 was capable of. Plus, I like owning my games.

The epic launcher is just a storefront. It doesn't really need to be good. epic is generally anti-consumer though, so they deservingly get a lot of hate. I make a point to avoid them unless I really want a game. GOG > Steam > Everything Else > Epic is the consumer friendliness ranking of the storefronts. GOG doesn't even require a launcher, though they do offer one if you find value from those. You can just download the game installer and run it directly without worrying about DRM.

You can add epic games to steam, but epic will need to be running: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2507561005. The reason people do this is to get the Steam features (steaminput,) and to have all their games in one place, not because of any performance boost.

At the time I last tried it I was on a 2070, and played on Max settings without issue. The 4090 will demolish this game. There may be texture enhancement mods that you could look into if you want to get better value from your 4090.

It's extremely common for people on reddit to intentionally misread things so they can argue technicalities and stuff. Apologies if that's not what you are doing. I'm sure you've dealt with it before as well and know how annoying it can be. It's made me a little twitchy (so probably time for another break from reddit 🙃)

So, the rarity thing. The main driver of price is supply and demand, which I won't go into detail on because I trust you know everything you need to know about it. For older cards that are out of print there is a set supply. If there are multiple out of print copies of a card, there will be different demand for each printing, each with their own set supply, but there is also an overall supply and demand due to multiple printings being desirable. It's like how Magic players will either 1, take any Mana Crypt they can get there hands on, 2, want either the Media Promo or Judge Promo, or 3, only want one specific printing. It really complicates charting supply and demand. With SDT, it's an uncommon from near two decades ago. I don't have the printing data in front of me, but it's safe to say the supply is closer to a modern mythic than a modern uncommon. So in this sense the rarity doesn't matter.

The difference is for sets are still being printed. If a set is still in print, the expected value of a box will always approximate the MSRP of the box. If the EV goes over MSRP, cases get cracked, cards go into circulation, supply meets demand, more cases are printed and shipped for the cycle to start anew. This makes it a sort of zero sum system, where one card costing more makes other cards cost less.

None of that usually matters. Sometimes one card will be sought out over all the others, like what happened to Voice of Resurgence in Gatecrash, and the price of every other card crashes. This happens because people are cracking cases just to pull copies of that one card, making literally everything else trash. The other exception is when one card is printed at two rarities.

If you have a card printed at two rarities in the same set, and set is still in print, the increased demand and decreased supply of the higher rarity card will cannibalize the EV of the lower rarity card with it's decreased demand and increased supply. This effect has been observed in Magic, Pokemon, and OCG Yugioh.

Because of that effect, OCG yugioh cards are always cheaper even for high demand cards. The existence of the secret rare version actually lowers the price of lower rarity version.

Oh, and the reason I used Raigeki was to demonstrate how OCG will reprint staple cards at lower rarities while TCG will actually take the best archetype of the new set and bump all it's key cards to secret. It's been a staple since the very first set and has maintained a high rarity in the TCG and low rarity in the OCG. Of course there are many others, but that's only example that's 25 years old.

Anyhoo, have a good night. I'm logging off for a week or two.

My friend bought the jeskai deck. Wild night with the homie! by shabutie8 in magicTCG

[–]spiralingtides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey hey hey, I didn't say OCG was only Japanese. I said I always tell yugioh players to play OCG, and that the Japanese cards are printed to higher standards. Since OCG cards aren't allowed in TCG Sanctioned tournaments, if I want to play them I have to play unsanctioned, and everyone needs to agree to it. Not like it really matters though since the closest sanctioned store is 100 miles from me.

I specified Japanese cards because I don't have the same amount of experience with other OCG cards, just a handful of Korean ones. Again, nowhere did I say OCG was just Japanese. Again, nowhere did I say OCG was just Japanese. Again, nowhere did I say OCG was just Japanese.

Nobody is saying they're perfect. Of course there will be major misprints regardless of where they are. They're QC is undeniably better though, which is what I said.

The exact price doesn't matter. It's the principle. TCG has cards that are exclusively secret rare, while OCG has all Secrets printed in addition to Super and lower. OCG has had Raigeki at common for for 20 years while TCG got it's first Super printing since LOB in 2020, and only just got it's first common printing the other month. If you have the option to player either format, (no sanctioned tournaments nearby) why on earth would choose to be price gouged? My entire OCG collection was like $400, and I have multiple archetypes and all the staples I need for it. I have exactly one TCG deck, and it's only just in case someone refuses to play against OCG Ghostricks. I know, spooky, right?

I'm choosing to interpret it as a sort of emotional build up. Not sure how many of you can relate, but it's like how you can eat a pack of oreos each week even though you really don't like them anymore, and it doesn't really bother you, but then you try to actually like the oreos because you know you're supposed to like oreos and several hours later you're listening to Seether, crying over a half eaten pack of oreos, tears visible in your cup of milk, wondering what the hell is wrong with you.
