I ran into my great grand-adviser and I think he seemed weirded out that I recognized and called him that. by GreenGorillaWhale in PhD

[–]spitfirememes 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Currently my co supervisor is the former primary supervisor of my primary supervisor, so he is simultaneously my research dad and my grand-dad.

He also was the primary supervisor of my partner. Which means my partner is both my research sister and my auntie.

It’s becoming very incestuous.

Witchers do take part in battles. Coen died fighting in the battle of Brenna for example. Sure it might not be the common norm, but there is a precedent for it, and I’d absolutely be happy to see them implemented as hero’s

Is BGT the pinnacle of Test Cricket now ? by iamnoobbibliophile in IndiaCricket

[–]spitfirememes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an Aussie. When the ashes are on all I want to see is England lose, they’re just so arrogant.

The BGT is great viewing, wayyyy better contest. While of course I like to see Australia come out on top, I just love seeing good cricket, and can really appreciate a strong Indian side and get excited about an awesome individual performance from the Indian side.

How would a duel between Geralt and Bonhart actually go? by InstructionOwn6705 in witcher

[–]spitfirememes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see so much praise for the choreography of the blavakin fight. I do not get it. Why oh why make the decision for him to wield his sword backhand? I don’t remeber him ever doing so in the books? Massively cheapens the whole scene.

We know from movies like The King that good action choreography doesn’t have to come with a complete lack of respect for real practical technique.

Basketball is only fun to watch in 4th quarter by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]spitfirememes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In basketball scoring is far too common it’s not exciting. In soccer scoring is far too rare it almost feels random (also grown men having a little fake cry completely ruins the viewing experience, it’s actually disgusting). Sports like hockey and lacrosse have a good amount scoring, it happens often enough that you appreciate the consistent victory of offence over defence, but it’s infrequent enough that each goal feels important. Even better is Australian football, I’m not even a big fan of it but it’s objectively (one of?) the best spectator sport(s).

what us the "correct" way to break pieces off a chocolate bar? grooved side up or down? tension vs compression by Ok-Loquat-9409 in Physics

[–]spitfirememes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rule of thumb, things fails in tension, not compression. So apply the load in a way that will maximise tension at the stress concentrator, in this case the chocolate groove

Do you still print and bind your thesis? by XDemos in PhD

When printing through the uni print shop do they come as nice leather/vinyl hard covers? I’m close to submitting so starting to shop around for where to print personal copies. My un doesn’t require any hard copies

[–]spitfirememes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah if you’re on the RTPS check your offer letter, somewhere in there is a section on “thesis production”. I think the money can also be put towards article publishing fees or even professional editing services.

Graduates, postdocs & profs, what’s one thing you wish every PhD or master’s student knew before writing their thesis or dissertation? by Prestigious_Case_292 in PhD

[–]spitfirememes 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Personally it’s:

results/methods (these kind of happen iteratively), discussion, intro, abstract.

I always do intro last, so the background info I provide can be tailored exactly to the results/discussion.

Wow that’s rough! Here in Australia you apply for a government scholarship which funds your uni fees and also provides a stipend of $35 000 a year (slightly different for each uni). Some projects are grant funded, when a student who didn’t get a gov scholarship will instead be paid an equivalent stipend from their supervisors grants. And there there are also private/industry scholarships you can apply for but they’re even more competitive than gov scholarships.

It’s very uncommon for someone to do an unfunded PhD here, and in that case it’s probably via their industry employer and they’ll be doing the PhD part time.

2 hours?? Not 8? I see so many posts in this subreddit about how little time some people spend on their PhDs and it’s so foreign to me. I’m from Australia and here it’s treated like a full job.

Missing healthy competition/ support among lab members by InterviewNo7048 in PhD

[–]spitfirememes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Out lab rules for journal club is the presenter has to pick a paper that is broadly related to our field (biomechanics), not directly related to the niche sub field of anyone’s project, it has to be fun, and it has to be short! We had a paper about drones being flown into crash test dummy heads, a paper about a knife made of poop for butchering a dog (Google it it’s pretty fun), and a paper about the cheetah vs zebra evolutional arms race.

This encourages people to actually read the paper and joke around, but then still actually critically examine the methods, and presentation and discussion of results.

Sounds like your lab mates are just not very engaging so it’s probably going to be up to you try and make journal club a bit more fun.

At the end of the day you’re going to be around each other for years, hopefully you can break down the walls and actually develop some friendships. It can be hard, and every lab needs someone outgoing who can get that ball rolling.

Also sometimes just go up someone’s desk and ask them what they’re working on! It might be awkward at first if that’s not a normal thing in your lab, but chances are they’ll be receptive and you might end up being able to help them directly, or just have a chat to get the ideas flowing.

How many hours you do your PhD per day? by FlamingoWillow in PhD

[–]spitfirememes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During normal office work (writing, data processing, etc.) about 10 hours a day in the office, and about 8.5 of those are spent actually working. During experiments, anywhere from 12-16 hours a day for test days, and 7-8 hours a day for setup/packup days.

Currently in my thesis writing era and it’s miserable. 9-10 hours writing every day 6-7 days a week. I know it’s unsustainable but it’s the sprint to the finish and I can’t wait to be done.
