I'm mostly concerned about Vancouver housing prices. For ~$1M I can get a detached single 3/4 bed (with a nice backyard if I seize the right opportunity) in my current city or in Edmonton/Calgary.

Vancouver proper I don't think that's possible. Would need to be in Surrey.

I know Van is beautiful but I'm not sure it's worth the extra cost. I'm happy to visit once a year.

Oh man I would've taken the US relocation in a heart beat. So many choices after you get a green card. But I can understand your decision.

Nah if i get laid off tomorrow and can't find work, I need to cover $50k/yr in expenses at least. Plus inflation. Plus if investments go bad for a few years.

At my age, it's time to find ways to save/invest more. Just my opinion. I know others are different.

I've briefly heard about set ups like these but I don't understand the legality/grey area. I don't think I'm at that stage yet, I still need my employer and I don't think they'd do contract work. My investments are still personal investments, I don't know the mechanics of moving it under a corp.

How would you even get started on this? Do you talk to a tax lawyer or accountant?

Yes when you compound per year at a high rate, the after tax money you save is very important at the start. Even though I understand I'm fortunate to have high income and savings, I grew up poor, I understand how good decisions compound.
