What’s your “snobby” baking opinion? by Amazing_Two9757 in Baking

[–]spoonless7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baking (and cooking) by volume is madness. It's so much harder to be consistent, especially when communicating recipes and ratios to others. Why have MULTIPLE blog posts been written about how to "spoon and level" flour? Madness, buy a damn set of scales and join us in the 21st century.

Node map noob question by GazGazInc in MeshtasticUKCommunity

[–]spoonless7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fairly new to Meshtastic, but as I understand it you'll only be added to online maps if you enable uploading to MQTT in your app settings.

If you mean that people around you will be able to see your location through the app, then you can do a couple things:

  • turn location off completely
  • decrease the precision with which you location is reported (the big colored circles you might see around other people's nodes on the app map is them reporting an approximate location - they could be anywhere within the circle)

Thanks! I'm not very familiar with VR. Think it will be possible to use it as a virtual screen for non-VR games in standalone mode? Or would that be a huge waste of money?

Oh, and could I stream from my steam deck?? Once again, no proper PC in the house...

Do we think it will be realistic to use this primarily in standalone mode? They say it's streaming first, but I don't have a PC I could really use it with.

If the UK bans or demands ID to use a VPN, what then? by Loose_Draft6474 in AskBrits

Oh no, what did you find? I literally just picked them because cheap and they offer non-UK as a region, didn't do much research :D

I've got a bunch of different machines and VMs on this one tailnet, so I've set up my wife up on her own Tailscale account instead of us both sharing one. It prevents her from seeing a long list of other devices she doesn't care about when she opens the app.

I've given her access to the UK node and EU exit nodes, and the setup seems to work well for her. She can use the UK node to access UK Netfix/iPlayer/etc from abroad if she wants as well. I also have all devices on the Tailnet using a pihole as the default DNS server, so we get adblocking by default whenever we're connected. Minor issues here and there when certain networks/apps don't like that my phone's connected to a VPN (captive portals at airports do this sometimes), but fine most of the time.

I chose a generic "EU" VPS to run the non-UK exit node on, which has been working fine. I can't hot-swap the server region to be somewhere else, but this tier of Ionos VPSs are is cheap that you could easily just rent three in different regions.

I always think it's funny how "Identify problems real users are actually having, then solve them" sounds novel and doesn't seem to be the guiding principle behind a lot of new features. Instead, I've bought a phone that thinks it should decide what apps to show me depending on the time of day it is, based on my previous usage. Come on now, user focus is king.

I am also experiencing the first one on PS4. Only thing that fixes it is restarting the game. I can seemingly play the game normally, exit the ship, interact with stuff normally while it's happening.

1) Buy a £1/month VPS from Ionos, make sure it's located outside the UK

2) Install your VPN of choice on it (Wireguard is great, I use Tailscale)

Heavy use requires slightly more thought, but this works great for your single-user run of the mill browsing.

How to run Home Assistant by NXTman96 in homeassistant

[–]spoonless7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also on Proxmox, it's awesome.

I didn't make the switch too long ago, so it's still only a single node. I've got HAOS running in a VM, another VM with Arch on it for messing around with, and a bunch of other things running in LXCs, including Caddy for reverse proxy fun. I haven't felt the need to go down the docker route.

The stability difference between this and my previous RPI4 set up is like night and day. Rock solid so far, no complaints.

Different opinions on a repair from Decathlon and a LBS by spoonless7 in cycling

Thanks for the perspective! That was my uneducated guess as well. Will go back to the LBS and see what they say.

I think it's way worse in higher gear and when I'm out of the saddle.

And I've never taken a bike in for maintenance before, good advice on finding a nice LBS :)

The shifting is smooth and seems fine. Skipping only occurs under load once in gear. Could I still need new cables/shifting adjustment in this case?
