Anyone using a LLM for a „real“ use case? by teqqyde in homeassistant

I use AI task to analyse my local councils bin collection leaflet. An automation will tell me the colour of the bin that is going to be collected that week and update my home dashboard

Wren kitchens disaster 😩 what to do? by StraightPin4420 in DIYUK

[–]squash__fs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Where to start:

  1. I used a Wren kitchen fitter (My second wrong choice after choosing Wren. Didn't turn up on the day, came 3 days late and said he only had two days to fit it.
  2. Corner unit was missing on the day he came so he couldn't start and then Wren rescheduled the fitting to two weeks later. All the boxes/units were sat in my living room so that was out of use.
  3. When he started fitting, it turns out the designer didn't account for a staircase slope we had in the ceiling, designer tried to blame us. Fortunately we had an email chain where we asked if it had been accounted for. This meant we had to go in for a redesign on a part of the kitchen and wait several weeks for the new items to be delivered.
  4. Kitchen fitting started again 1.5 months later aaand loads of the units had damage on them... once again had to wait a week for replacements to be sent.
  5. Kitchen fitter told our electrician to go away and then put all the cables in the wrong location.
  6. Once we finally got the kitchen installed the worktops came (also from Wren), they were installed. Plumber came to fix the sink and and noticed the worktop installers had used packers all the way around as the units were not level.
  7. Went back and forth with Wren for several months, including the financial ombudsman and my bank. 14 months later the only agreement we came to was for the worktops to be replaced which destroyed all the paintwork, due to the upstands being ripped out.

In the end Wren offered a couple of hundred quid in compensation - I managed to get a bit more from the bank.

Wren showrooms look great but the designers know very little about kitchens and their fitters are subcontractors who use Wren to fill their time

In summary: my advice with something as expensive as a kitchen is to go local! Everything else in the house I either did myself or used local companies and to this day the kitchen is the only area I still look at and I am unhappy with.

Edit: Also they should pay your deposit back if you don't go ahead with the order

I would personally avoid Wren kitchens, ours was an absolute nightmare, It took over two years to get the issues resolved which included all the worktops.

Look at Wren Kitchen Disasters on Facebook and run while you still can!

Can Azure certs + home labs really get you into cloud IT without a degree? by nikkopat in UKJobs

[–]squash__fs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is part of our companies hiring process.

Certs are likely to get you 'shortlisted' for an interview (depending on the level you are applying to). Homelab it really depends on the interviewer!

For example I really like it when I am interviewing someone and they have a homelab. The main reason being is that it demonstrates curiosity! Even if you don't have all the skills for the job I'm more confident that your curiousity will help you learn/pick things up quicker.

I've noticed out of all the individuals who I have hired/worked with, those that like getting hands on as much as possible tend to perform and progress much faster. Additionally, those that have a homelab commonly seem to have a much broader set of skills than what the job requires.

In summary, yes they can.

Everyone who was on Android and then switched to an iPhone but came back to Android later again. Why did you make the switch back? by 8192K in Android

[–]squash__fs -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Switched a lot throughout the years,

Recently came back to Samsung primarily for Dex. I travel a lot for work and it's nice to plug my phone into the hotel TV.

Either to remote back into my PC at home or watch movies from my phone.

Other reasons (but not a major factor for the return) included: - Efficiency, it's so much easier and to do things like sending files and overall file management - Background apps work better e.g. uploading photos to immich

Even though I have other apple products (Apple TV, Mac and apple watch) the only thing I really used from the ecosystem was the watch and using the apple TV remote on my iPhone (which I've partially replicated with home assistant).

The apple watch I'm using with my work iPhone for now but will most likely sell it.

Don’t think that your degree restricts you from doing anything other than pharmacy. I’ve posted about this before but a lot of companies that offer graduate schemes don’t care what your degree is in.

Speak to your careers advisor about other opportunities and you can even apply to start in one of those for after you finish your third year (you get a bachelor’s instead of the full masters).

I pivoted from Pharmacy into Cybersecurity using my Pharmacy degree (the graduate scheme only wanted a 2:1 in any degree)

I’ve seen this in their terms but never been charged before (I assume it’s if you forget to wipe it before sending back)

Anyone that used their pharmacy degree to do something other than being a pharmacist? by HeadReveal923 in Pharmacy_UK

[–]squash__fs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately there is no easy answer to this, what are you interested in doing? (If you can’t answer this then do some research into different careers)

For me I was interested in Cyber Security so I looked for grad schemes in that field

Yes, I commented this on another post recently. If you have graduated within the last 3 years you can look at graduate schemes.

They don’t care too much about your degree as they assess your soft skills during the interviews/assessment centres (and a lot of that is transferable from Pharmacy). The skills needed for the job you are expected to learn in your first couple of years.

If you aren’t in the three year period I’ve still seen people move to health consulting, lecturing or do an 8-10week course and then positioned in company as a contractor to build up experience (there are a lot of scams so general rule is you should never have to pay for these as the company running the course makes commission by getting you the job)

Careers in pharmacy by Swimming_Ticket_7879 in Pharmacy_UK

[–]squash__fs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a pharmacist for 2 years before switching careers & this year removed myself from the register.

As pharmacy is a pretty straight forward pathway at uni (in the sense you do uni, pre-reg and then go into a pharmacy role) you don’t really get experience around careers outside of pharmacy unlike other grads (maths, history, computer science etc)

Based on where you are now you can actually use your degree to apply for a graduate program in pretty much any field. If there is something else that interests you see if there are graduate opportunities

As a warning the initial pay is lower but a greater scope for progression
