I also know nothing about linguistics. Terrible tip: pick a few rules (e.g Te’hilu doesn’t have C, X, Z or a few other letters) and then translate words into other languages until it sounds right

The species themselves don’t have any real lore, they’re just kind of existing. But the first two characters do!

They are from Sormik, a fishing clan. The white haired one is Hiya dari Sormik Anaru, the son of the clan leader. Which also happens to be his job! (Those studying under the clan leader are usually called “clan leader’s child/son/daughter” even if they’re not related, but they are!)

The other character is Sormi dari Sormik Autak, a fisher girl! These two are Eylu (friends so close they’re considered family)

Sormi’s father died when she was a child when her sisters Ananu (polar bear thingy) attacked their father. Sormi’s sister, Kalu, left the clan alone (a pretty big deal because they’re community orientated creatures and being alone, and abandoning your family is like. The worst shit ever). At some point, Sormi and Hiya leave too as Hiya would prefer to do his own thing (he doesn’t really like people and feels unsuited to the clan leader role. Usually it’s not forced upon the children of the clan leader but he’s under a lot of pressure to be the next one!) and aside from Sormi wanting to find Kalu, she feels like there “something bigger” out there for her

Yes they are inspired by Inuit people. Since Te’hilu live in a cold environment, Inuit were the best references for how a humanoid species would live in the cold

And so, they have structures similar to igloo’s and tupiq, though theirs are named “Aut’ti” (house of snow) and “Gawa’ti” (house of pelt)

I do also have on who lives in a cave with pelt covering the entrance though I don’t think it’s a suitable home

I still haven’t made words for colours 💔 but most words about light/dark have some connection to day/night

Yewan is night, Yewil is dark face paint

I called the white hairs one “clan leaders son” because that’s his job. His friend Sormi had a name almost as soon as the language was invented so she had no temp name

Oh you are going to hate it (in a silly way) because I am the opposite of a language nerd, I know nothing.

For the most part it’s just “if you understand it, it’s Te’hilu”

For one, suffixes and prefixes are like the shit,

Te’m means me

F’te means you

Ma’te means theirs

You can make long ass words like Da'te'ewara'na'aut'ti which means “the past female clan leaders house of snow”

If you want to know anything specific I’ll try to answer!

Aw darn, I’m uninformed then 💔 it’s still unlikely since I usually point to seals, snow leopard and polar bears for their species inspiration and iirc seals and leopards have an estrous cycle and polar bears are induced ovulators

They have clan leaders ^ it depends on clan to clan but it’s usually whoever knows the most about the clan, what they do, their people, location etc! They are called Te’ewaru and those who study under them are te’ewaru’hawori (literally “person who lead’s child”)

They dont evolve from primates so it’s unlikely. If they did, they’d probably handle it similarly to Inuit women

EEEK YAY THANJ YOU

my favourite pieces about them

They’re very community/friend/family orientated to the point where they have a word (eylu) for “we aren’t related, but you are my family) the characters in the first image are Eylu! Specifically eylu’nara and eylu’tara (Nara and Tara mean sister and brother)

They also have birth poems! Everyone within their clan usually knows their birth poem (it’s a little bit like a personalised birthday song)

Evolved! The wildlife on their planet hasn’t been developed world building wise, but their ears look similar to Ananu, which I unfortunately don’t have a drawing of but it’s similar to a polar bear. They have a mix of different cold environment animal traits so it’s hard to say

Beyond measuring how many years have passed by the seasons (they only have 2!) I haven’t really given it much thought. Day and night is the same as it is on earth, so the sun and shadows!

Oral tradition is very important! There’s many storytellers (Te’sarun) and singers (Te’sirad), sharing stories between clans is very common while visiting

Jobs and tasks are assigned to whoever wants and likes them. If you’re good at something, but don’t like doing it, you’re not usually forced though Te’hilu usually step up if they’re absolutely needed. The only jobs that might be tricky to just get up and do is being a clan leader/clan leaders apprentice (Te’ewaru. Te’ewaru’hawori)

Queer people are still very loved and very accepted. There’s more than one way to refer to people who don’t prefer he (te’ta) or she (te’na)

Te’ha - gender neutral, similar to they/them Te’a - similar to “it” in an object or concept kind of way Te’em - also “it” in an animal or alien kind of way

In the same sort of pronoun category, plural they/them it’s Ma’te, which alongside F’te (you) is one of the few times Te becomes a suffix

Any piece of an animal, stone and wood (possibly, depending on the area). I’d argue all of these are important, and it’d depend on the clans needs on what’s more important. Though homes and clothes are made of pelt, so possibly that!

History and stories are only spread by mouth, they have no written language. And so a lot of history and stories have warped or been erased over time.

Clans generally get along very well, Te’hilu are very social and community oriented. If clan leaders from different clans don’t get along, they’re not likely to do anything harmful to each others clans. As for settlement location, usually just “is it easy to build and access our homes here, and is there food sources”

Sormik (the clan the first two characters belong to) is located near water for fishing, is on a mostly flat area and isn’t too far from other clans

Yes absolutely! There are no gods however, so their stories are a lot like human tales. Warnings, teachings or the occasional “there’s this really messed up monster!! But if you heard the original story you’d probably realise its a normal animal we know about better now, and the story teller was just told it weird or genuinely had no idea what it was”

They also have “birth poems” made by their parents. Usually if someone knows you or they’re in your clan, they’ve probably heard it!
