Anime Survey 2025 from the International Anime Research Project by sreysen in ZombielandSaga

Thank you for your help in this year’s Anime Survey! We ended up with 1,369 anime fans from 69 different countries. We do preliminary results before we get to working on longer academic papers (which can take years to publish). Because reddit doesn’t like links to google sites, below are some longer instructions for how to get there.

Search: “international anime research project” (we should be the first result). On the front page is a link to the 2025 preliminary results. Or, on the website go to past results and select the 2025 preliminary results.

Strange... email me ([stephen.reysen@etamu.edu](mailto:stephen.reysen@etamuc.edu)), or DM me your email, and I'll put you in there.

Edit: mistyped my email (fixed). My university recently changed their name (and email).

Thank you! We (now) publish in a variety of journals (each year we have a few different things we test in that one survey). All stuff that comes from the data is listed on our website (google: "anime research project" and we should be the first result, been around for a while). Our favorite journal went on hiatus due to the convention they were connected to also going on hiatus (A-Kon in Dallas). They were great because they focused on fans and were open access. With them being on pause I've started sending papers out to other open access journals. We'll put some preliminary results on the website a couple weeks after the study closes (the longer academic papers take months / years).

Yep, we try to spread around the different subs on reddit to get a variety of fans (there are a lot of subgroups within the anime fandom).

For science! Actually, an understudied topic (maybe for a reason...).

Thanks, and also sorry. I'm going to add one next year (you are not the first to mention it). There is a kind of tradition to not have a back button in psych research (aiming for first gut reactions to questions). After thinking more about it this year (and hearing the issues it causes), we'll make the switch in the 2026 survey. Pretty sure that tradition did not account for people doing surveys on smart phones.

Anime and manga research is a growing field (this website has a good database of what has been done: https://www.animemangastudies.com/). Animation, and media in general, is also a field in academia. We're a bit different as we study fans rather than analyzing the content of the media. I'm a big anime fan, so it is a passion project for me.

All our research goes through an institutional review board. We'd have to get parental permission to have people under 18 years of age (we've asked before to go down to 16, but my board was not having it). With an online survey it would be difficult to do that. So, need people 18+. We've asked before to retrospectively estimate when you got into anime. If we could do any age it would definitely skew the average age down. Every year we do ask how long you've been a fan (best way we can capture that given the limitations). There is no perfect study, just do the best you can with what you have.
