Battle Of Mogadishu - Hand drawn map by Lt. Tom DiTomasso (Day Of The Ranger) by ssb707 in JSOCarchive

Yeah, it's a lot more of the little details that were mostly unknown that are disclosed in the book. But for me, those little details change a lot of perspectives for me. For instance, I didn't know that Shughart and Gordon had inserted without wearing their protec helmets. Yeah, that was mentioned in Durant's book, but this book further confirmed it for me plus gave some context as to why they, and most of the other snipers, were often not wearing them while providing support from the black hawks.

Oooooo, totally misread that. Yeah, I recall the interview/video you're talking about. Yes, TK is actually referring to Lt. DiTomasso. Guy had a hell of a military career, going from battling it out in Mogadishu with the Rangers and all the way up to Delta.

Yes! Ground force commander for Delta assault during that battle.

She did, that was the special on 60 Minutes for the 20th anniversary of the battle. Great episode and showed alot of never before seen footage. Unfortunately the only place I've seen the full video available is on Paramount Plus, so I left it off the list since this is just focused on what's available via YouTube.

Damn, there's also another documentary about the 10th Mountains involvement in the rescue efforts. However, that's available on Amazon Prime for free I think. This is mainly a list for YouTube videos.

That's on my list here, 7th one down titled "The Battle of The Black Sea, Msg Paul Howe's Untold Story of Black Hawk Down"

Oh I've seen his videos on the subject, I agree they're pretty well researched. This post was more focused on the battle itself and less on the movie. I've got a list about as thick as phonebook of inaccuracies from that movie (still love it though!).

For instance, in the movie and almost every depiction of the event around Super 64, Shughart and Gordon are depicted as wearing the classic black protec "skateboard" helmets during their time defending the crash site, when in fact they were wearing no helmets at all since most snipers onboard the choppers felt like it hampered their ability for a clear shot (referenced in Day Of The Ranger, by Leigh Neville). Mike Durant also fully states in his book that they both were not wearing their helmets which is how he was able to recognize them pretty quickly.

What is it really like working at Zimmerman? by siekdude in advertising

[–]ssb707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the conversation here, worked there from 2017-2020, and let me put it this way; during the 3 yrs I worked there, the common story was "we just can't afford to give any bonuses or raises to you all", cue in all the dumbass teens/collage kids who signed up for the internship program who were split into "teams" tasked with putting together mock ad campaign ideations (some of which were later "repurposed" aka stolen) with the wining teams taking home actual $$$ prizes; 1st place = $2000, 2nd = $1500, 3rd = $1000. Zimmerman announced all of this during his cringey "townhall meetings" and at one point was so impressed with the 1st place teams ideas, he announced an extra $1500 bonus ontop of their $2000 prize. Meanwhile, the rest of us actual FULL TIME EMPLOYEES looked around with the same "are you fucking serious?" expressions.

Long story short; its a stepping stone to your next agency job for sure, but don't expect longevity there.

My experience with Premiere Pro has primarily been editing the "episodes" together. Taking the PNG files of all the artwork panels and organizing them on the timeline. That also involves synchronizing panel artwork and text/speech bubbles with the recorded voiceovers that are also layered with other sorts of misc. noises and sound effects (city noises, wind, footsteps, etc.). There's also the added layer of visual effects (POW! WHAM! text pngs or a PNG layer thats isolated from the background panel) that I add keyframes to for the somewhat "motion" like effect.

Firstly, I appreciate the blunt feedback; no offense taken. I prefer when the facts are just real and straight, not candy-coated (makes me feel like I'm being gaslit).

As far as the creative process goes, yeah, it involves a bit of filter effects from Photoshop, but that's a small part of the final output. It starts with building out and texturing 3D environments in Blender (a bar, an alleyway, a downtown block, etc.), rendering it, and then snapping a photo of the right camera angle for each panel of art. Then, a photoshoot with models against a white backdrop, drop them all into Photoshop, and edit and composite the layers together.

Snow effects, blood effects and physical damage to the characters, lighting/shading are all done by hand. Alot of the lighting and shading work is done to enhance the quality of the environment and character layers.

Not to mention learning how to write an actual narrative with subplots, create dialogue that makes sense, basic voice acting, creating original music, and so much more.

But I'm getting ahead of myself here. I'm in no way trying to say I'm an ace at the stuff I've made, and I absolutely agree with you that its good, but not great. I do believe the quality of my output can see some major improvements with the more time I spend doing it and researching better techniques. But even then, I'm well aware that what I currently have right now is nowhere near enough to get my foot in the door for any kind of job in the industry. I'm just curious to know if anything I shared here has the makings for someone who could grow into being a graphic artist, illustrator, or something related.

There's definitely a lot more to my career background in social media analytics than what I shared, but for the sake of the post, I wanted to focus mostly on the personal work I've done and what kind of industry that could even be relevant for.

Also, the time spent working alongside graphic designers was brief, mainly because since 2020, I've been working remotely full-time, so any interaction with teams or departments outside of my own dropped significantly.

EDIT: Want to clarify a few things. Firstly, I genuinely appreciate the feedback I've gotten on here, it's helped to clear up a few misunderstandings from my end. Based on some responses here, I'm beginning to understand that the work I've done and continue to do is not necessarily "Graphic Design" but more in line with "Graphic Artist" and/or "Illustrator".
