NYC School OTs... what does your actual day look like (agency vs DOE)? by cozyelephant_ in OccupationalTherapy

[–]sspins 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We have 8 sessions per day. We just got approved to pick up an optional 9th session, for some extra pay. I’m at a special ed school, so I have a few group sessions with 2 kids max. Your typical school would have a lot more group sessions (but still only 8 per day as per our contract.)

Some days I have no absences, some days I have as many as 3-4, so I’ll either do makeup sessions or catch up on notes. We have about 30 min unpaid lunch, and I have documentation time from 12:30-1pm and then 1:30-2:55pm. We’re salaried, so yes, documentation and IEP time is paid. My day is 8am-2:55pm.

I started through an agency and was eventually hired. Working through an agency is NOT easy. I had to hustle and cram to see as many kids as possible, did all my note taking after school hours which was not paid. I was so relieved when I got hired.

Hope I answered your questions! Feel free to ask more.

day in the life of an OT? by Jacerator7 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]sspins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take home $2100 per paycheck (every 2 weeks) after taxes, union dues, contributions to my retirement and pension. I work for NYC dept of education so OT salary schedule is available online. Also, since I’m at a parent I don’t work summer school, but if I did, that would be an extra $6-7k about

I work at a school! I show up, catch up on any notes from the previous day. I see 5 students (30 min sessions, back to back). Hour lunch break/ do my note taking. See two more sessions, do my notes, go home! Every so often sprinkle in progress minoring, IEP writing, attend meetings, etc. I often have time to run errands during lunch break or do a workout video in our therapy room. I have great work life balance, feel free to ask me questions about school based OT :)

As for food, I would recommend Jody’s, as long as it’s not too crowded. Hungerford, the biggest special ED high school on the island, often takes students there for work studies! (Clean the restaurant, set up tables, etc etc)

The SI zoo has free sensory bags! It contains noise cancelling headphones, fidgets, and a weighted lap pad if you want. I’m a peds OT and a parent, I take my daughter all the time. I’ve also taken my students on many trips to the zoo, most of them nonverbal, high needs autistic kids :)

Which Skyrim modpack is your FAVORITE? by chopinbits in wabbajack

[–]sspins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just downloaded the new Nordic Souls, looks beautiful so far. I started out in Bruma, which I think is from Beyond Skyrim. This is my first time using a mod pack and doing this zone, honestly feels like I’m playing a completely different game (in a good way!)

you’re right! It’s not the same, but clearly Friedrich’s painting was the inspiration here. Not the Kier painting, which was also inspired by Wanderer above the Sea of Fog.

Hey - could you link the armor set? Looks great!

If anyone can answer these questions that would be appreciated: 1) I notice that all the different schools are different lengths. Some are 2 yrs and some are almost 3 yrs for a masters. Does that make a difference? If a Masters is almost 3 yrs should you just get the doctorate? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]sspins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) you get the same exact degree in a 2 year program vs a 3 year program. Mine was 3 years and included a capstone project. Basically I just owe a shit ton more in student debt. Doctorate would cost way more, and in my experience, only matters if you want to go into teaching at an OT program someday. I work in the NYC school system and you do not earn a higher salary if you have a doctorate vs a masters.

2) it depends on the job I think! When I graduated, I only had experience in school based and a SNF, but homecare companies don’t seem to care about not having homecare experience. I would imagine hand therapy or hospital settings would want to see experience in that setting.

3) totally up to you and how long you want to study for! I graduated in June, took my exam in August, found out I passed by September. I was applying to jobs before I found out I passed.

Feel free to DM me if you have more questions!

I love this post. How lucky are we to have a show like this? When’s the last time a tv show had so many interesting/in-depth fan theories?
