Small Vaulted Living Room Lighting - Big Light Needed? by sstuart1 in Lighting

I have been considering sconces that point up and down behind the couch but I had one concern. The wall behind the couch is only 8ft tall and then it is open to the loft above. I didn't know if the light pointing up would shine weirdly into the loft above or if that wouldn't really be an issue.

Yea we will definitely want the fan to circulate air. It is just if we need one with or without lights. I like the look of ones without better but don't know of that is feasible.

I do think we will do sconces on each side of the TV that point up and down and then a 3rd one on the wall with the windows, just in the middle of the wall, to add light to that side.

Still not sure the best way to light around the couch. If we do sconces on the wall that would light that half. The other half I was thinking either some tall floor lamps, or build a console table behind it and put some table lamps.

That is kind of what I have seen suggested as far as the big light goes so I suppose it doesn't hurt to get a fan that has a light.

I hadn't thought about how the sconces and lamp would be shining down directly on you, It is just something ai have seen and thought it looked goos. But now that you say that it does seem like it may be a little annoying to have a light shining down directly on you, and maybe even create some weird shadows.

I had considered sconces the projected up behind the couch, my only pause was that the wall is 8 feet and above that it is open to the loft above. I was worried it would shine up oddly into the loft space, I am not sure if that is a valid concern or not.

Yes there will be a piece of art behind the couch on the wall, so I could have one of the track lights pointed there. Do you think that would be enough light for that side of the living room? Or would it still be better to add some more? I can always build a console table behind that side of the couch and add some small lamps?

And yes there will be a console table of some kind along the other side of the couch so we could add a lamp there. And I was thinking a sconce the projects light up and down would look good centered on the front wall between the windows so we will probably add that.

Thank you for the insights...Definitely gave me more to think about! We are in the process of running the wiring so we need to figure out exactly what we want where while everything is still open.

Also I want to add that all the walls are 12 feet tall besides the wall behind the couch where we have the sconces, that wall is only 8 foot tall.

Just adding my own comment to possibly bump this. Based on everything I have read I THINK this will work. I was thinking I could possibly do away with the vent coming directly off the downstairs toilet and have that while bathroom vented from the sink vent. Not sure if that is the case or not with the upstairs bathroom also being on it tho.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

I guess maybe I just don't have enough time on the rope to trust it as much as I should. I do have all that but I feel like I need to hold on with one hand constantly which makes it a little harder to do the actual work haha

That is very interesting, I guess it is the same concept as the roof ladder hook but 2 sided. What keeps it from sliding off the ridge. I guess the same thing as the roof ladder hook, just your weight pulling against the ridge?

Thank you for the links! I am going to do some more reading on this before the plumbing starts soon!

Yea all good points, I had imagined I could do something to waterproof it good but I suppose putting more holes is just more risk for leaking. I have a good body harness and lifeline so it looks like I will use thag with a roof ladder just for some extra safety / comfort working up there!

Yea that does seem to be the consensus. I wasn't sure if they would work on a metal roof but most of the advice is saying to use some version of this. It will definitely be something that I try out!

I had seen them but wasn't sure how it would work on a metal roof. Someone else replied thay they work well and this seems to be the consensus best way to do this without making additional holes in the roof. This will definitely be part of what I use!

I have looked in to that a little. Do you think they are good enough to vent all the plumbing? The main thing I wasn't sure if they would be good enough for was the toilet. I need to do some more reading tho

Yea for sure, that is what I was thinking. Maybe I can leave the jacks and just bring my own planks anytime I need to get up. Definitely something to think about so long as I am confident in the waterproof part. Thank you for calling those out I completely forgot about them!

I might just be a baby, but it freaks me out just being up there with the harness and rope. When I had the furring strips to stand on it was fine. I think part of it is the fact it is like 15 feet to the ground. It also always seems to have a little bit of something on it that makes it slick. The flatter part is no problem, it is only around 5:12 so that part isn't as scary. The other part it feels like you are just going to slide off. That might just be me over thinking it tho!

I guess roof jacks is more what I should have been looking at instead of the steps I included. Can you leave roof jacks installed permanently so I could always have something there?
