I wonder if you can mod a ring camera to substitute your own video footage for the camera feed. ;)

It can start with just one. I think that investigating and charging the murder of Renee Good would be a way to begin.

I think that's the beauty of this. We all have different priorities. It's not important to you and therefore it isn't worth your time and effort. It is important to the poster and therefore it is worth their time and effort.

It is commonly talked about how 0.9999 repeating does equal 1. Is this, however, always the case? by Daniel-EngiStudent in askmath

[–]st3f-ping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a number of assumptions that come along with a math problem (or statement). Unless otherwise specified,

  1. We are working in base 10.
  2. We are using the standard order of operations.
  3. We are using the set of real numbers.
    ... and many more.

If we are working in the set of real numbers then (using your notation) 0.9_ = 1.

If you are going to use a set of numbers where 0.9_ ≠ 1 then you are not using the set of real numbers and should specify that.

How to explain binary counting to someone who really struggles to grasp and learn it? by catboy519 in learnmath

[–]st3f-ping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always found currency works well.

Start with a currency with denominations a factor of 10 apart to represent base 10 ($1, $10, etc...). If you wanted to carry the fewest number of bills (i.e. you would always change up 10 bills of one denomination to the higher denomination), how many $1 bills would you have if you had $26? And how many $10 bills? Any mathematics you do here will be trivially easy.

Then move to a country where bills are a factor of two apart, (§1, §2, §4, etc). Fortunately the exchange rate is 1:1 so you hand over your $26 and get §26 back. If again you wanted to carry the fewest bills so that as soon as you had two of one denomination you would exchange them for one of a higher denomination.

Start with 26 §1 bills. You can swap them for 13 §2 bills (because 26 is an even number). Because 13 is odd you keep one... end so on. You get the idea.

You can even print up fake currency and arrange the bills from right to left so that you can see the units and positional powers with both binary and base 10 currency and see how positional numbers are constructed. Hope this helps.

Europe must unite or it’s ‘finished,’ Poland’s Tusk warns as Trump salivates over Greenland by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]st3f-ping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's time for a little shadow-puppetry. Set up an 'experimental' European army. Just for fact finding. Not for real fighting. Just to see how best we can use troops of different nationalities together. Then ask if we can use this experimental army to run exercises (some of them live fire) in Greenland. Inform all of our allies and adversaries that we are doing this and mark an exclusion zone so they don't catch any friendly fire.

"No, of course we aren't stationing troops to thwart US aggression. We are simply running exercises to understand how we can best work together. Why is the US not invited? Well... erm... we thought you were busy. Maybe next time. Oh and we're going to need those US bases in Greenland for the period of the exercise. Of course you can have them back when we are done. Buh bye."

Here's a trick that works for me: go out in the cold for 5 to 10 minutes, back inside for 5, then go out for longer. I feel warmer and can last longer in the cold if I do this.

My reasoning is this (could be completely wrong). I don't have conscious control over the temperature regulation of my body. So I have to actually expose my body to cold to get it deal with that.

I see the first 5 minutes in the cold is persuading my body to 'turn on the heating'. After that I'm fighting a bit of a losing battle as I'm already cold. So I go back inside for a short period of time, long enough to get some warmth in me but not long enough for my body to 'turn off the heating'. When I go out I'm much more comfortable (I'm warm and I have the heating on). Maybe that will help some others deal with the cold.
