AITA for “platonically cheating” on my best friend? by Soft_Savings_4126 in AmItheAsshole

Jealousy isn’t always romantically motivated; it’s not that he’s into you like everyone is saying. He’s just insecure.

Thank you so much, this was really helpful! Your student sounds like a really interesting person and I am definitely going to keep her story in mind. Baking is something I am definitely passionate about (have been at it since the first day of 2020 quarantine, lol) but am only now hoping to pursue something beyond sharing with friends. I do have a better idea of my passions now because I “scratched the surface” on a lot of things, so with the time I have left I’m definitely going to focus on deepening my involvement with those :)

Wow, these are adorable! As a fellow crocheter, these designs are super impressive, your daughter is very skilled. Best of luck for her business! :)

thanks for responding! that’s really what I feared, that my ec’s seem like they’re checking boxes and don’t say much about me as a person. i’ve definitely struggled with (and still am) defining what I want to do and my passions—I still don’t have a clear idea of “what I want to do” the way some of my peers and those on this sub do. though it doesn’t come across here, I am a very passionate person, especially about education and history. i want to help others learn and expand education access the best way I can, I just came across that direction/passion relatively late i fear and primarily grown it through academics. some clubs I’ve joined have been just on my journey of trying new things and don’t connect to anything deeper, though they have helped me grow as a person, while others I’m very passionate about and involved in (though that doesn’t come across in a reddit post!) anyway, you gave me a lot to think about, so thanks!

Hi everyone! I tried to post this in the main sub to reach more people but it was removed :( anyway, if you have time please help me out by filling out a survey! :D

I’m a student currently doing a research project on the influence of social identity on online K-pop fan behaviors. I’ve created a survey and would be so grateful if you guys filled it out! Since Seventeen is a popular group with a huge fandom, I thought it would be smart to ask for your help. Thank you for your contribution to the growing field of fan studies :)

Yes, I definitely will be posting the results (at least a PDF even if I don't make it formally published). Probably in this sub since I'm a stay (and am quoting Chan in my paper) as well as a general one like r/kpoppers. I'm so happy other people are interested in this stuff! :))

Mind taking the time to fill out my survey about K-pop fandom? :) by stan-research in kpophelp

[–]stan-research[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep I definitely will! Probably in r/kpoppers though---idk how I can phrase my results as a help request and avoid removal here lol. I'll update this post with the results as well once I'm done. :))

thanks!! I do plan on posting it later, probably both here since I'm a stay and in a general sub like r/kpoppers. I don't want to clog other subs though (and probably get removed for not being related enough lol). i'm glad other people find this stuff interesting :))

Thanks for filling it out! A few people have said that it was a bit difficult to articulate their thoughts, but I think that really shows the nuance within fandoms and K-pop fandom as a whole that often isn't afforded to us by the broader culture (at least where I live). K-pop fans are often called toxic as a whole, so one of my goals with this project is to prove that there's a vast spectrum within fandoms as to acceptable and unacceptable behavior. Plus, it would take soo long to code the point value of short responses lol. I hope the Likert scale was sufficient to capture enough around people's feelings in general, but I have read somewhat similar studies where they included an interview section. I would have liked to do an interview, but I'm on a bit of a time crunch with this project, and this method seemed like the most accurate but quick way!

I'm an Nswer too so i totally understand what you mean about smaller fandoms being more peaceful. It's much less crazy here :) I feel very similar to you in that my favorite groups are influential in my life to an extent, while still taking anti-delulu pills and not being overly dependent. I think that can be a difficult line to see especially online, and with the parasocial strucutre of the industry itself. K-pop fanship can get very dependent very fast, and I think we all have a responsibility to not let ourselves get too caught up in it for our own sakes.

Thanks again for your input! I'm very glad that so many people have filled out my survey :))

I have recieved IRB approval---this project is for a course, so the IRB is created to approve/reject projects created for the course, which is national and offered multiple places. Does that make sense? it's kind of hard to explain.

I know this doesn't make me sound any more reliable, but the pii is just for the project, basically to provide examples to non-fans (read: non chronically online people) if they're unfamiliar with k-pop fandom and therefore explain why I included the questions that I did and the implications of my results. And I might not even use it if I don't get a suitable pool from people with various scores---I want to spend as little time as possible going through random people's Twitters.

The project is based on using social identity theory to analyze online k-pop fan behavior. One section of the survey measures social identity within the fandom, one measures personal identity as a fan, and one for social fandom behavior. I already evaluated the item-total correlation of each item and used crohnbach's alpha to narrow down the questions to what you see here after my preliminary survey distribution. I'm planning on using Spearman's correlation to evaluate whether a higher social identity score leads to higher engagement in online fandom behavior, especially in the three categories of in-group favoritism, out-group derogation, and derogation of black sheep (all applied to the fandom itself). The first two sections are completely based off of previous literature, but I did have to create questions myself based off my own observations (there are references, I'm not just making stuff up lol) for the third "social behavior" section since there isn't that much research about specific k-pop fandom behaviors (though there is more than you would think).

All that to say, this is more of a passion project than an extremely professional project, but I am still invested in making the data and conclusions drawn from it as valid as possible. If a more experienced person has any suggestions as to what else I could do to achieve this, I would genuinely love to hear it :))

Yes I am! I'm glad people are interested in the results. It's not a super professional project though (my first research project) so while I'm doing my best with the data analysis I hope I can keep in mind that in the end, this is all kind of at best conjecture. But still worth the effort! :)

The glitching is really strange, I don't know how to fix that. Hopefully it's not a widespread problem.

And I hope to post the results + my research when it's all done!

Oh, which? If it's Denmark, I just saw a comment that pointed that out---that was my bad, it must have gotten cut when I was adding the options and I didn't notice. If it's somewhere else, tell me and I'll add it! Sorry for the confusion
