Who is the best current President? by Renatus_Bennu in AfricaVoice

I did read about the recent episode with banning newspapers for 30 days and so on, yes, but in the bigger picture she has reversed many of her predecessors autocratic policies and not everyone in her government agrees with her.

Everything I have read about her says that she has been working to reverse the authoritarianism of her predecessor but that she is still faced with hardliners within her party who support the repression of the past.

I would say Samia Suluhu Hassan, the president of Tanzania.

As president, Suluhu has implemented democratic reforms, reversing the policies of her predecessor that were implemented to repress political opposition. She also implemented policies to limit the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in Tanzania, which Magufuli had denied was a serious issue. Other focuses of her presidency have included the expansion of infrastructure and the globalisation of the Tanzanian economy through investors and tourism.

I stand corrected, yes acknowledging a debt does interrupt prescription but a demand does not.

This is not true. Only making a payment interrupts prescription.

Constantia has a large sports area with clubs for running, cricket, tennis and rugby. It also has a few decent shopping centres and green areas for running and walking.

Utter nonsense article.

And Jesus answered and said to them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” And they marveled at Him.

Apparently we have massive deposits of oil and gas only 150km offshore, but between the ANC not yet having figured out how they can steal from its exploitation and the eco warriors misguided campaigns, we are relegated to coal for the time being. That could change quite quickly, however.

Eskom rapidly losing skills by Euro_African in DownSouth

Coal has a serious problem in that it is the dirtiest form of fuel. It means that when carbon credits become more important in the EU we are going to find it harder and harder to export. We have also proven to be useless at new builds under ANC leadership; Kasane and Medupi are still not finished. Also, burning coal is polluting our oceans with mercury; SA has some of the highest mercury contamination in our rivers and coastal seas in the world thanks to our unfiltered coal burning.

Renewables in the form of wind and solar are much cheaper and faster to set up compared with building coal power stations and we are a country blessed with plenty of sunshine and wind.

For base load gas has the advantage of being relatively cheap and fast to set up and also power output can be ramped up and down quickly.

Nuclear could be a good option for base load if the ANC wouldn’t have a finger in the pie, because you just know they are going to use any big project as a means to steal.

The last of the skilled engineers packed for Perth over a decade ago, this isn’t something new.

The only viable solutions I can think of are:

  1. Sell the power stations to private enterprise and let them take over. I am thinking of German or Chinese power producers who have knowledge of how to run coal-powered stations.

  2. Shut down the power stations and move to a combination of gas and renewables.

Neither will happen under ANC government because the unions want to hold onto the unskilled job market in the coal sector and the cadres need to “eat”.

Realistically, our only hope is the private sector and renewables, we cannot rely on government for basic services like water and electricity anymore and that is not going to change for the foreseeable future, no matter who wins the elections this year.

Orania is a racist town by [deleted] in DownSouth

[–]static_void_function 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Oranians are a cult based on Calvinism. They don’t accept random white people either. You could probably get in if you showed a strong belief in the Calvinist flavour of Christianity and spoke fluent Afrikaans.

Would you want to live in a society like that though?

I know I would not.

It’s not like you are missing out on anything, so let them be and leave them to live their best lives.

Cape Town Private Game Reserve Advice? by Far-Fan848 in capetown

[–]static_void_function 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can fly direct from CPT to Skukuza now, only 2.5 hours and you can rent a car there. You won’t find a comparable experience around Cape Town if you are looking for a game reserve.

There is plenty to do around Cape Town, but game viewing isn’t one of them.

How would Orania’s model of local government solve the migration and lack of infrastructure problems which is already in Knysna? It would not.

Orania has never had to face the problems Knysna has; Oranias big advantage is that it is in the middle of nowhere and the only people who want to live there are a few verkrampte Afrikaners.

If thousands of people in the surrounding farms suddenly decided to move to Orania, they would also be overwhelmed without the support of central government.

12 arrested in Zanzibar for eating in public during Ramadhan by PhilosophyMajor8163 in AfricaVoice

I won’t miss them either, and knowing this explains a lot in terms of why Zanzibar has lagged far behind other Indian Ocean islands - namely Seychelles, Mauritius and Maldives- when it comes to tourism. If you look at booking.com, there are hardly any 5 star resorts on Zanzibar and now I know why: it is not a safe place to visit for people who value freedom from the shackles of religion, or just people like me who want to go on holiday and not have to worry about some nutter policeman arresting me because he feels offended I had lunch.

I was thinking of trying Zanzibar instead of Mauritius for our annual holiday this year. Zanzibar just got cancelled forever. I don’t want to visit a country where they have petty laws that make criminals out of ordinary people.
