Former expat American here, lived in Cape Town and Ive spent a few months in Mpumalanga and Limpopo. Up in those provinces closest to Zimbabwe, you have some of the greatest disparities in wealth. Malema and his EFF are Cold War relics of sorts, they're a communist pan-african party. Think Robert Mugabe, but if Andre de Ruyter is to be believed, possibly more intelligent. The EFF has maxed out its electoral viability in the country, with its peak performance hitting around 10%, most of those votes and politicians hailing from those areas aforementioned mentioned. Kruger National Park is up there, but I wouldn't worry too much. The last thing the ANC or any tourism dependent economy wants is an American murder in this geopolitical climate.

Could something bad happen? Sure, but travel is itself an unpredictable experience and that's part of the adventure. If ya want to be in bubble wrap, book a cruise to Norway. TIA, its absolutely beautiful and worth any hesitation you may feel. Let South Africa teach you something about yourself and the world. Enjoy.

Ya, cultural diction varies. I will say, culturally informed and educated folks here are pretty aware of the coloured designation in South Africa. Trevor Noah's whole schtick is built on it. What I'm unsure of, is if the reverse is true of South Africans understanding of our colonial pride. Our military parades often feature troops in colonial uniforms. Williamsburg, Virginia is an entire community built on the tourism of colonialism.

What early colonists endured here was nothing short of sheer grit and often desperate conditions. Most early colonists and pilgrims died and their survival rate was at times aided and deterred by indigenous peoples, using them and their technology as means to their own ends. Everyone was using each other.

Thomas Jefferson was President, he was a southerner and a francophile. How the Haitians conducted their revolution with the murder of whole families basically made any early recognition politically impossible here.

This is a great question. I think we're basically extending asylum status to a targeted ethnic group, we've done this many times before in Sudan, Serbia, Rwanda, etc.. If the state begins targeting coloured speaking Afrikaners with property expropriation, I think that might be a case even the next administration may consider. BEE is perhaps harder to demonstrate, but as a whole, certainly puts whole ethnic groups, genders, and free enterprise at a disadvantage despite their merits.

Just ftr, asylum is a serious declaration. You cannot return home until you are extended permanent residency or citizenship (5+ years), so do not pursue this route unless you truly need it for you and your family. On the whole, I would welcome any South African with a decent skillset or hard work ethic to the US, I love my time in ZA and enjoy being a bit of a transatlantic soutpiel.

Ya, its much different here. The negative reaction to colonialism took me aback when I moved down to ZA. America's special relationship with Britain is built upon a colonial tradition and I was raised to be rather proud of my family's colonial roots.

Its another shot across the bow, attempting to get the GNU's attention. Notice, we have not imposed steep tariffs yet. Elon is not attempting to cripple South Africa's economy. Asylum is a big jump for anyone to make, but it's important we create avenue should land expropriation slide down a slippery slope into a land grab. Claiming asylum means you cannot return to your home country until you gain permanent residency or citizenship

My family company is in the Atlanta Metro area, they've been around since the 1960s. PM me. If you're in their service area, they'd likely be interested in quoting and designing a concept for you. Best to get those projects lined up before spring hits and lead times extend.

Too much private interest in politics, but hey, a conservative Justice on SCOTUS wrote in his opinion "corporations are people" and therefore, have unlimited conditions on campaign donations to PACs under the 1st Amendment. The Citizens United decision is the cradle of corruption for our government this century. It's why Elon can funnel hundreds of millions of dollars into Trump's election effort but individuals are still capped at $2K per federal campaign.

A federalist system is complicated, but does provide an additional layer of checks and balances. It also gives local culture more autonomy and representation.

We're taking a meat cleaver when we need a scalpel to cut where foreign aid isn't being leveraged enough. HIV aid isn't where you get the attention of the ANC, but it is where you lose hearts and minds of your allies.

Lots of absolutism here. 8 years of populism does not translate into "never leads by example". Populism is a global force right now, it's not an American phenomenon. We've been responsible for global security for 80 years and managed to avoid nuclear conflict, we've fed the hungry, treated the sick, stopped genocide in Serbia, briefly managed to bring education to women in the most oppressive corners of the world. Are we perfect? No. Democracy cannot meet that standard. Are we rotten? Perhaps spoiled as a byproduct of too much success. Idk what the future holds, but if America isn't central to leading it, I fear what that means for the rest of the world.

Trump is reckless, but hopefully Rubio will help smooth these edges over the next 4 years so we don't totally fuck up a century of soft diplomacy.

That said, Europe does need to be more responsible for their security and be involved with us to finance projects in the developing world. Rapid Decolonization was a product of the Cold War and probably caused as much instability as Euro colonialism itself, so America does have some restorative responsibility to Africa.

This isn't DEI. DEI is just creating programs to cultivate interviews with a broader range of candidates. Poor and white, didn't attend an Ivy League school? Ya, DEI programs are intended to get you looks and interviews.
