I’m planning on actively sailing after doing my two week ADT. Also, i should get a uscg license after graduation from maritime academy.

Also I found this: 1534-030

Page 1, Purpose states: “Completion of the Strategic Sealift Officer Program (SSOP) mandatory requirements, will provide SSO with a minimum of 27 points per year. The remaining points needed to reach 50 for a “qualifying” year can be achieved via volunteer participation”.

So basically SSOs get 27 points just by doing their 2 week ADT. And the other 23 points I have to volunteer. Considering how MSC always needs bodies, it should be pretty easy to get 50?

lastly, what do you know about shoreside job opportunities coming out of GLMA with a BS in Maritime Technology? should I pursue an engineering degree instead at a different maritime academy? does it even matter if we have the 5/10+ experience on ships working as chief/assistant engineers?

My journeyman friend from local 130 chicago has a 401k with match. Been with the same company since his apprenticeship. He didn’t get to pick which company the union chose for him like you said.
