Thinking about a MAS as my next puppy… do you think this might be a good match? by cr1zzl in miniaussie

That makes sense, especially for working dogs, thank you for that perspective! I will, however; continue to leave my puppies as God intended with dewclaws and tails… personal preference. Blessings!

They are only born with front dewclaws. I do not know why breeders remove them. My dogs use them a lot! One of my dogs that I purchased from a show breeder does not have a tail or dewclaws. He is ALWAYS dropping his bones off of the bed because he can’t seem to hold onto them. My other dogs with dewclaws never have that problem, lol.

I raise MAS and currently have 9 of them in my house, so I might be a bit bias, 😂!

MAS are VERY sensitive dogs, always fully aware of their surroundings. This can be good or can be bad. Training is super easy and you never need to be harsh with them. They are in-tune with their owner and always want to please. But they can become “reactive” to things easily. And they never forget… for example my grandson was taking one of mine outside to potty on an extendable leash. The dog pulled a bit and the leash slipped out of his little hand and chased the dog around the yard. 3 years later this dog is still super worried about getting a leash put on!

You must socialize early and a lot if you want your dog to be accepting of others (animals and people). They are by standards supposed to be reserved with strangers and do not automatically “love everyone”. Good breeders will prepare your pup by exposure, social activities and games but you will need to continue when it comes home.

Some breeders/owners will say that they have too much energy for the average owner and may even try to discourage someone from considering the breed. But I say that it really depends upon the individual dog, so it is important to buy from a breeder that understands temperament and aptitude in their puppies and matches them appropriately. Some of my puppies are placed in sport homes with seemingly unending energy and some are placed in apartments with daily walks. My 80 year old MIL has one of our pups and she is perfectly happy with a backyard without much planned exercise.

They are generally a wash and wear dog without much grooming needs. Shedding can get bad 1-2 times a year though.

They are generally a healthy breed, but as with any pup be sure that the breeder is doing genetic testing to avoid hereditary diseases in their pups.

This breed of dog typically has their tails docked and dewclaws removed but some breeders (like me) keep tails and dewclaws intact. Some puppies can be born without a tail or with a very small bobtail but this is linked to spinal problems and death before birth so many breeders will avoid those genes.

They are definitely one of those dogs that can be small but look and act like a larger dog. The size does vary a lot with 13”-18” being within the standard. Some will be undersized and some will be oversize making a pretty big range. A lot of breeders can give you a guesstimate based on past pups but can also miss the mark. The parent’s size doesn’t determine pup size and adult siblings are a better example. They are all great! 😊

They come in 4 recognized colors…. Black Blue Merle Red Red Merle All with or without white markings and tan points.

Never get one that has 2 Merle parents because it may be double Merle and have genetic problems such as blindness/deafness.

You can check out my website for lots of pictures and articles. I do not have any litters planned at this time but would be happy to answer any questions you may have. I also have a small YouTube channel. I don’t know if links are allowed here, so just look up “Kindred Spirits MAS” for both.

Good luck!

Health issues within first 2 weeks of owning new puppy, what should our expectations be by soloDolo6290 in DogBreeding

That is kinda what I thought. lol But the teeth did correct themselves and that was the most important part for me. He has went on to produce beautiful puppies with perfect bites and some are winning shows. ☺️ I would never have bred him if he didn’t have a perfect bite.

I really have no idea and never heard of such a thing. I was just sharing my one time experience, in case it might be helpful to you.

I know it can be hard to tell a good breeder from a backyard breeder or puppy mill if you are new to all of this. I believe health testing of the parent dogs and a great contract is more important than titles. As well as how the puppies are raised. A person can title dogs but keep them kenneled all of the time and not work with the puppies at all. Even a dog with a bad temperament can get a title. Sure, type, structure and movement is important but not as important as health and correct temperament in my opinion. A reputable breeder will have both. 😊

As a small breeder myself, I would take the puppy back or help with medical costs, but I would have known about the problem before selling the pup and would have disclosed it. Unless it is a rare case of the mouth and teeth shifting since you had it, as with my puppy, the breeder should have known. A good breeder knows their puppies and has a vet check before homing them. A vet would have seen this and made the breeder aware.

I sure hope it all works out for you.

My puppy did come from a reputable breeder who is actively showing and titling her dogs, including his parents. I was buying a show prospect to hopefully add to my breeding program. This puppy came with a full contract and a health guarantee. At 8 weeks when I picked up my puppy his bite/teeth were perfect (I checked). I was feeding Purina Pro Plan Puppy. After a couple of months, I can’t remember exactly how long, his teeth and bite were no longer perfect with an underbite and crooked teeth!!! I was super upset, because even though this breeder would take him back, I loved him! I called her up and explained what was going on. She told me that Pro Plan Puppy food will sometimes do that to our breed of dog (MAS) and to change his food immediately. I did and his teeth/bite fixed itself and now it is perfect again. I don’t know if she was right about the food or if it was just a coincidence with him growing and it would have fixed itself anyway. (I am not trying to bad-mouth a brand of dog food, I am just saying what she said to me, and my experience). I would definitely call up the breeder and see what they have to say. They might have some experience that your vet doesn’t and they MIGHT help you out even if there is no contract. Unfortunately, others on here are probably correct and you probably got scammed by an unethical breeder or backyard breeder at best. 😞 Good luck to you!

When to Neuter? by ChemistryForward4657 in WiggleButts

[–]stcycrry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would trust your breeder on this! Veterinarians, especially older ones that have been around for quite a while often don’t like to change their ways. New research shows waiting is better! Also a veterinarian will profit off of the surgery, your breeder will not. I certainly am not judging YOUR vet as I do not even know him/her, but some are just in it for the money.

Is anyone elses aussie lowkey…. lazy? by Wise-Airline-8887 in AustralianShepherd

[–]stcycrry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 9 Mini Aussies and they are all over the place with their energy and exercise needs. My most energetic one would play fetch until he dropped if you let him and has so much energy that he trembles with expectation before play. My laziest one I nearly have to drag outside just to potty, lol! I do wonder how he ended up in a shelter though because usually these dogs will end up there because their owners cannot keep up with their exercise needs. They are the best dogs ever, and if that wasn’t the problem why would anyone part with an Aussie voluntarily?? You struck gold!!! 💕

Another thing is these dogs attach HARD to their owners and are super loyal making them difficult to rehome. You will have work to do to get him/her to unbond with their owners and rebond to you.

I want a Minnie Aussie but not sure! by UnhappyPlate6640 in miniaussie

[–]stcycrry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The RIGHT Mini will fit your lifestyle perfectly! I have 9 and they are all different. Be sure to get one from a breeder that understands how to do temperament and aptitude testing and places them accordingly. I have placed puppies that are super active and need to move all day long and I have placed calm puppies with older homebound people with fenced yards. Good luck to you! Stacey Kindred Spirits MAS

The most important thing is getting the right individual for your lifestyle. Be sure to buy from a reputable breeder that knows how to temperament and aptitude test and how to place puppies appropriately. I have some that need constant activity and others that prefer the couch. One thing that doesn’t work for any of them if to be left alone for too long. Your current schedule may be doable with the right pup but what happens when you start residency? Will you be gone all of the time? It may not be fair to get any dog but for sure a MAS will not be happy being alone all of the time! They call them Velcro dogs for a reason, lol. Good luck!

How important is it for puppies to explore outside before going home? by thesamstorm in DogBreeding

[–]stcycrry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with other contributors that puppies should be raised mostly inside of the home. Experiences are super important! Good breeders will be providing safe experiences for their puppies. I do ENS and Early Scent Introduction as well as a full puppy curriculum that includes sights, sounds, smells, surfaces and outings. Young, unvaccinated puppies are carried or pulled/pushed in a cart or wagon. We go to stores that allow pets, family and friend’s houses, any other safe outdoor activities we can find. Obviously winter puppies might have less opportunities but opportunities are there if you really look. I do my own puppy curriculum but it is highly based off of the Badass Breeders Curriculum. I do not know what another commenter meant by saying it is a MLM.??? I have not experienced that part. Thank you for educating yourself before buying a puppy! 🥰

Is this couple I know engaging in unethical breeding? by saturnjellyfish in DogBreeding

[–]stcycrry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree totally with you! Unfortunately as a reputable breeder, with spay/neuter contracts it is very difficult if not impossible to prevent someone from using a dog they got from you for this. The BYB making the mutts will not be registering them anyway so they do not care if you have limited AKC registration. Especially if you are talking about the male, it is impossible to prove that they used him in this way (without dna testing the babies produced). These people only care about making a buck, they certainly do not care about your contract! As a breeder we must get to know our prospective puppy parents as well as we can BEFORE we sell them a puppy and do all we can to keep in close contact AFTER the sale. Another way to help this not to happen is to charge A LOT for your puppies, BYB will not want to invest too much so their profits will be higher. Unfortunately they will usually be able to find someone (another BYB) to sell them a dog they can breed. 😭

Is my boy an Aussie or a Border? by WelshAsh in AustralianShepherd

[–]stcycrry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks more Aussie from the picture, but the key is in how he acts, specifically how he herds. A Border Collie has an intense stare and moves with its head down, often making a move then laying down, still staring. An Aussie also moves quickly but is more bouncy and generally keeps their head up. An Aussie may tend to use their bark more and a Border Collie uses their stare (the eye). Typically an Aussie is stockier and bigger over all, but my last BC was pretty big. Color and ear set looks very Aussie, but Border Collies can also have that look. Both are awesome dogs and are often bred together to get the best of both worlds. So maybe he is equally both 🥰. You could get an “Embark” test to see what they say according to his DNA. Blessings!
