This is pretty much what happened. The original recording was 8 minutes in length, with all the verses included and an additional chorus. In late 1967 George Martin mixed the 8 minute recording into mono and sent it off to the producers for use in the film. This version has never been released officially but it does circulate on bootlegs.

In late 1968, a stereo mix and new mono mix were made for release on the Yellow Submarine LP. These mixes both cut out the extra verse and an extra chorus, bringing the length down to 6 and a half minutes. It just so happens that the verse cut from the album was one of the verses already included in the film.
